At camp today the defense looked overall very fast and impressive. But the player that stood out the most was kamerion wimbley. He looks bigger, faster and more mechanically sound than he did last year. The one play that stood out to me was when he went one on one with joe thomas and blew past him like it was nothing. This was the only time I remember seeing Joe get beat. But if training camp is a sign of things to come, we found a diamond in Wimbley and he will be a force on the field and fulfill the drought the Browns have had in the pro bowl line ups. This guy is going to be an animal this year.

Great to hear. After a great rookie year under his belt, it's pretty exciting to think what lies ahead for him.

Can you say Shawne Merriman? I can.

I expect that kind of leap out of Wimbley this year, becoming one of the best defenders in the game and making the Pro Bowl.

Unfortunately, unless we get 7-9 or better, Wimbley will need 20 sacks to get noticed by anyone outside of Cleveland

I think the same thing goes for Winslow too. Last year he leads the league in receptions and was easily one of the top 3 TE's in the NFL IMO. But playin in cleveland hurt him. IMO hes going to need to have more catches and yards than anyother TE to get any recognition.

Winslow's problem wasn't the fact that he played in Cleveland. His problems were:

1. Team record.

2. The fact that most of his receptions were dink and dunks from a QB who was forced to use him as a release valve, due to extreme pass rush pressure.

3. Knee problems limited his speed and mobility.

Many of these problems should be gone this year.

FB's will look at Wimbley right away this year... when teams prepare for the Browns they know they have to watch out for this guy...

Wimbley needs to work on a few more moves.. the shoulder dip works.. but it also pushes him so far behind the QB that he always has to hope the QB doesnt release the ball before he can get back to him..

One positive thing about that move though is it does cause a lot of fumbles cuz the QB doesnt see Wimbley coming AT ALL.

WOW, you expect Wimbley to be the best defensive player in the league this year? That is a big expectation.

I have heard that by a few people that he is stronger and faster than last year. When making comparisons Merriman's name always comes up. Thats good to know cause he is going to be a beast!

Getting 2 per game should put him well above the mark.

Wimbley becoming one of the best in the game will only help Antwan Peek as well.

If Wimbley's sack totals stay the same, I expect Peek to get 8-10 because in order for Wimbley's numbers to plateau he'll have to be receiving a TON of attention.

As for if McGinest benefits? Who knows.

If our D becomes a pass rushing force, it could SOMEWHAT cancel out whatever inabilities our run D shows. See: 2001 Browns D. We could rush the passer with the best of them and had a ton of turnovers. Not saying we can duplicate that because luck also plays in turnovers, but I expect to be in more games because of pass rush.

Stats can be decieving. Winslow averaged under 10 yards a catch and scored only 3 times......sorry those aren't exactly Pro Bowl numbers.
I remember Steve Heiden scoring 3 TDS in one game a couple years ago.
Maybe I'm wrong.
By accident Winslow should be scoring 5 TDS a year. I expect this year Winslow's repceptions will drop and but his TDS will increase.

Not sure if you realize this or not, but that's exactly what Halfback was saying. He agrees with you as do I.

It's really difficult to account for two serious pass rushers, let alone three. Todd talked about putting Willie, KW & Peek on the field at the same time, under certain circumstances. If the D-line can play beyond expectation, if Orpheus is truly the O of Old and if Robaire can give us solid minutes and we get solid play from the rotations, the D should be a blast to watch this year. Lot of ifs, I know (including the ones concerning the DBs) but Ted played solid last year, Orpheus at the very least should be feeling better, Robaire is a definite upgrage at the spot and I think Simon could have a breakout year in terms of really solidifying that backup role, perhaps playing both sides. Woohoo! Can't wait.

The more I think about it, I think the key to having a successful season for the Browns this year is:

Progression from 1 and 2 year players like Fraser, DQ, Wimbley, Williams.

People expect to see better play out of these guys just because they've been in the league a year or two.

I think before you should just expect it, there should be some signs that it will happpen.

All of those guys had spells last year where you said to yourself ' when this guy gets a little more experience, he's going to be even better'.

If we get improved play from these 4 guys - and I think it is reasonable to expect that - our defense is going to be very, very good, IMO.

fair enough, lots of catches could also be because he gets good seperation.

I do agree with what your saying, he should get some longer routes if the OL is 1/2 of what homers (did somebody say my name? ) think it is.

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

The year we drafted Braylon, I was hoping to trade down and grab Merriman and was bummed when we got BE. Then we drafted Wimbley and i was ecstatic because I see him as a player in the same mold..it would've been awesome to have Merriman rushing off one end and Wimbley off the other..but oh well.

Just think then we couldn't have the "Legend in his own mind" BE running bad routes and dropping balls....lol. That was by far the dumbest thing Phil has done since he's been here. I know they said the offers weren't good enough, but I'll take Merriman/another 3rd or 4th round pick over BE anyday.

I don't think we draft Wimbley if we have Merriman. So any pipe dreams about them playing together is moot.

Was there an offer on the table such as the one you speak of?

I can't see us taking Wimbley if we have Merriman.... just my opinion though

BE was solid last year and I think he's due for a break out year... he isn't my favorite 1st rounder we've taken... but hey... he's been productive and still has a lot of potential...

There was talk that we had a couple of offers, but didn't feel they would be worth the 3rd pick so we balked.

Your right though if we had Merriman we would have chosen Ngata...........and that's still alot better than having BE imo.

Let's not forget that a defense gets pretty pourous, especially against good rushing teams, when they're forced to stay on the field 40 minutes a game. The biggest addition to our D this year could very well turn out to be the O-Line and Jamal Lewis.

we didnt blitz because it wasnt our scheme and the dbacks were a little week. It was because we didnt have Peek. I do think we will blitz more than 1 linebacker this year so i hope the corners are up for it
