We have all these failed football guys and now they've turned an easy slam dunk, equipped with a mini trampoline and everything, into a missed lay up with their consideration of Mayfield and Darnold over Rosen.

I love it. Based off everything I've seen said, McCloughan was born to evaluate prospects. Terrible GM because he's not fond of the administration that comes with it. The guy is simply a super scout with a stellar record.
I'm excited to have him on board. He's a valuable voice.
Man, again, can we get some Jimmy Haslam love? For all the noise about the prior front office being unconventional and lacking pure football evaluators, Haslam has hired a handful of guys who themselves were considered GM contenders. This truly is an All-Star front office roster of football guys.
Well done to Jimmy. He listened and he acted on what was being said. He admitted he got it wrong with his previous approach (I still won't blame a guy for trying to be fresh and innovative) and made changes that have really impressed.

I agree - and I was thinking of the implications of what's happening for ownership.... My only caveat is that it's early. Let's wait a season or two before we proclaim Jimmy finally got it.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

I think Jimmy brought in the right construction team to rip things down to the studs. To do the demo work. Then he realized he needed a new team to oversee the construction. I don't believe the blue prints have changed at all, only the builders.

Well, I can safely say I like this hire too. Great hire and I think it's beyond a helpful one. Let's gather all the elements needed to assure we use all our assets in the best shape and form possible.

In two years Sashi had better drafts than every other FO. It seems to be trending that way...PLUS...he was the architect of the draft haul we are sitting on for 2018. Foles leading the Eagles to the SB win proves that that team around Wentz was/is pretty darn good. Wentz would be a welcome addition here...but the sting of the "miss" on him is lessened seeing what the backup was able to do on his team. The development of our Wentz-alternatives will tell another part of the story.

Dorsey helps a friend that was screwed by Washington to get back into the league.
He gets rewarded by having someone that is really good at scouting, scout for him.
He also has someone on the team now that Cousins likes and trusts if he wants to go that direction.
You gotta love this decision!

In two years Sashi had better drafts than every other FO. Garrett, Njoku, Schobert, Ogunjobi, Ogbah, and Kindred is really good for two drafts. That is not even mentioning guys that haven't developed yet or lesser role players. I expect the same level of player acquisition from the new guys because they are supposed to be the best of the best.

Good overall post, but does Cousins like and trust McCloughan? I thought the latter was the one who refused to sign Cousins to a long-term contract?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Good overall post, but does Cousins like and trust McCloughan? I thought the latter was the one who refused to sign Cousins to a long-term contract? He was, but he was the only one that was honest with Kirk. Allen and Snyder would say one thing to his face and another behind his back. He was also the guy that convinced the owner to bench RG3 and give Cousins his shot. When McCloughan got fired, Cousins said the new FO will have to prove itself if it wanted to sign him long term.

The new rumor is McCloughan pimped Mayfield at the senior bowl and then the Browns hired him?

Why would they need to hire him if they already want Mayfield?
The guy also ranked Guice from LSU over Barkely. Does that mean we are drafting Guice?
LOL.........people believe what they wanna believe.
Dorsey is the GM. McCloughan is a consultant.

We hired the guy for a reason.
I think once the draft is over, we will make changes in the scouting department. Teams almost always do. I see Scot being brought in as a cross checker of sorts, then being hired in as the full time director.

Scot McCloughan pushing John Dorsey to draft Baker Mayfield By: Kyle Kelly | 14 hours ago link Former 49ers and Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan has been added to Browns’ general manager John Dorsey’s “dream team” front office to go along with Alonzo Highsmith and Eliot Wolf. McCloughan has been very vocal that Baker Mayfield is his first choice at quarterback in the 2018 NFL Draft. According to Rotoworld’s Evan Silva, “Word circulated at the Senior Bowl” that McCloughan was “talking up” Baker Mayfield to #Browns GM Dorsey. Mayfield was the only quarterback Browns general manager John Dorsey saw in person. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Evan Silva ✔ @evansilva "Word circulated at the Senior Bowl" that McCloughan was "talking up" Baker Mayfield to #Browns GM Dorsey. https://twitter.com/Rotoworld_FB/status/960642930556928000 … 5:36 PM - Feb 5, 2018 136 85 people are talking about this Twitter Ads info and privacy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As the Browns own the first and fourth overall picks in this year’s draft and are clearly in need for the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, it will be interesting to see how this one plays out once April rolls around.

No doubt this guy has cred.
I don't know who is going to be the best as it shakes out, and I don't know who we will or should draft.
If it works out to be Mayfield, I have to trust the process. My opinion, or the opinions of any other poster in here doesn't amount to much.
That isn't to say I don't respect other people opinions. It simply means our opinions don't carry any weight when it comes to who the team drafts.

j/c... All this "HE's A DRUNK" about Mayfield is ridiculous.
He's no where like Manziel...nothing like him.
He doesn't fall asleep in the QB room, he actually has a play book, he studies hard. He doesn't have one shred of entitlement in body.
Don't like the kid cause of his game then say it. But to come out with out right garbage is just not right.
I like it that Mayfield is getting more n more respect. I still think the NFL has a fobia on height for big investments in drafting a QB. But coming in this I was a big time Mayfield fan for him to be a Brown come May!
Cousins? I get what he was saying about Cousins.
Consultant...puts him low on a totem pole just another opinion but I think respected and possibly brought in mainly for QB??? Its a big decision for us, FA n Draft!

We hired the guy for a reason. Peen...one reason might be to help an old friend (McCloughan), who started his NFL career working with Dorsey for 5yrs in Green Bay.
McCloughan was out of football, fired by the Redskins in March of 2017, "allegedly" due alcoholism. McCloughan returned to running his scouting service, that he ran before joining the Redskins in 2015.
SO..welcome to Cleveland, Mr McCloughan.
On the issue of the Browns letting the world know that Dorsey and now McCloughan are high on Mayfield, some 85 days before the beginning of the draft...that seems very odd to me.
Most teams do not begin talking about their first round picks before the draft and with the Browns now under a new GM, it seems odd for the Browns to be so willing to talk about the QB they like in the upcoming draft.
To me, it sounds like the Browns might be trying to set up a smoke screen or they might be searching for possible trade offers for the #1 pick.

Could be any of that. It might be for a trade down, but to me it would be dangerous to trade down hoping our qb is there at #4. Maybe they know the Giants want mayfield. Trade down 1 slot to get the QB we really want?
It's just silly season. There are going to be several thousand rumors/possibilities before draft day.

I agree with this in the moment. These hires are a big piece of what was and is missing in players. They will be dealt great hand with extra cap help and picks that can have impact. Props to him trying in a fresh direction to start 2018 season. Harvard boys are bygone experiment. These guys could be rock stars if we do not mess it up. Pick the best, period. Get us what you know is needed. And really, really avoid some of the nonsense in the past two drafts. You win with people.

One and four.
Hard to blow one and four.
I mean there are four quarterbacks to choose from. There is an unreal running back.
And the consensus top DB in Fitz.
There is also a good pass rusher in Chubb.
And if you wanted you take the top OL at four no problamo.
Trading down? Why?
I don't see it. It would have to be a unusual situation. Of course that doesn't mean it won't happen.
Still think it is QB at one and BPA at four no.

This guy is a good add.
Another experienced talent evaluator. Another set of eyes and another voice.
We have a bunch of personnel decisions not just quarterback and this guy should be helpful.
I think though it is important to remember that Dorsey is the decision maker. He is the guy who will wear the crown of bum (if he blows the QB mission) or hero if he gets it right.

Agreed. QB at #1, whomever their choice is, and either Barkley or Fitzpatrick at #4, whichever is on the board. As for the McCloughan hiring signalling a Mayfield pick, that is a very narrow view. He's a good scout and we have FA ($110M), the draft (12 picks) and a whole bunch of needs. His input would be useful for a lot of other things besides which QB to select.

It very well could happen, I expect us to go darnold but it is a possibility. This is a truly unique qb class as you have a six sided Dice to roll for a #1 QB.
There is a case to be made for Allen, Rosen, Darnold, Lamar, Mayfield and Rudolph.
I don't want a six ft QB but his quick release, mobility and accuracy puts him in the Convo. i am not a fan of Allen but his size and arm talent puts him in the Convo.
I believe we take Danold but man I want these guys to do their job on all these QBs and that includes the Cousins option.
