Trump finally found a place to dump his failed Trump steaks.

Interesting proposal and worth considering....
I too would wonder if the savings could be as great as speculated, seems awful ambitious... My first thought as I read it was that it sounded fairly expensive, so reading they expect a savings was surprising...
It does solve some problems, at least we know poor families are getting SOME nutritious foods.. I've seen folks with SNAP cards in line buying nothing but junk.. so that would be a plus.
Second, we already pay farmers to NOT grow food so we can stabilize food prices, I've often wondered why they couldn't grow just a little more and make it available to the needy for free or reduced.. If the government can pay them to NOT grow it, why can't they pay them TO grow it and then give it to folks who could actually use it?
I could see missed shipments or botched addresses or stolen food boxes or other things being an issue for the poor, who tend to be kind of transient... it's more logistically difficult to make sure they get the food than just loading money on a card remotely..
That's just off the top of my head.. interesting proposal though..

Not that I'm opposed to the idea of this USDA Box of food, but I think this one size fits all cost cutting measure will blow up in our faces. Food allergies and systemic abuses by all parties are just a few ways this goes poorly.
The conspiracy theorist in me says that a package designated to what those in power see as a nuisance part of our population could contain any type of contaminant you wanted to introduce to that population.

SNAP needs reworked to something along lines of WIC...
Monthly Voucher for following: 10 lbs rice 10 lbs raw beans(black, navy,Lima, pinto, lentil etc) 4 gallons of milk 2 jars of Peanut butter 5 loaves of bread $30 meat voucher 3 dozen eggs 4 gallons fruit juice 20 cans of vegetables 20 cans of fruit $20 fresh fruit voucher 5 lbs cheese.
Just a skeleton proposal...can be adjusted based on income and family size
Staples...learn to cook....guaranteed to reduce BMI numbers which helps Medicaid expenses.
I am sure this will be met with claims of hating poor people and minorities.

I love how any suggestion gets blow up as unworkable because of one example like food allergies. Nothing will ever work if the basis is it has to work for 100% of the people 100% of the time.

Coupons good for healthy foods! That's an idea I can get behind. Taking crap food and drink off the table. Taking high end foods of the table (maybe steak and seafood over a certain price point). WIC style coupons or card restrictions would be more than acceptable to me as a cost control AND could make a positive improvement in the health quality of the users diets. The biggest issue to me for dealing with food programs is stopping fraud, rather that be the user selling the benefit for easy cash or the provider jacking prices on qualifying items. Another issue is availability of approved foods in all areas; some urban food stores carry very little choice in fresh veggies, etc.

This is a horrific idea.
It's what we send to Natives. Most of them try to sell it off so they can get fresh fruits and vegetables (though it's hard, because who wants to buy potted meat?)
It's also what those con artists that we gave the Puerto Rico relief contract tried to do. The "fruit" portion of the meal was a pack of fruit snacks.
On top of that, it's wildly inefficient. The needs of say a family of four compared with an elderly diabetic differ and needs can't be met with a box of cheap unhealthy food.

Is it any worse then the system we have now where McDonald’s and the corner minimart all accept snap??? My wife works as a nurse and can attest to the fact that most of the diabetic issues are a result of non-compliance with diet guidelines....fast and easy (bad diet) is preferred over healthy....people by and large are not interested in their own health despite claims otherwise. Reality is we cannot efficiently taylor specific food and meal plans for 90 million snap users. The only way to do so is having open ended food cards like now tgat are the ripest point for fraud and abuse.

I would address the whole budget in another way. Is anyone from the conservative side concerned that there are going to be an additional 7 trillion in deficit in the next 10 years?
And the 7 trillion additional deficit is after Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security are getting cut by 1.8 trillion.

I have an idea, let's deliver those garbage MRE's to the poor. I use to trade them to the German kids for REAL food when I was in the Army. I bought a box for my 12 yr old step son for Christmas, he loves them....yuck!

the logistics alone would make this more expensive than the current system.
Trump and their supporters once again don't care about cost, as long as it shafts the poor people.

Now instead of fear mongering...let’s be honest....yes trump is proposing cuts to the social security disability insurance program that is overrun with scammers. But you use the term Social Security which the vast populous thinks of as “retirement” program...trump has no plans to cut that so quit trying to scare people that the cuts don’t apply to. As far as Medicare...he is making cuts that will be paid for by tightening waste fraud and abuse...which we all know happens...it take it you are ok with fraud since you are against this type of reform? And $1.8 trillion....you forget the over 10 years part....$180 billion every year does not have the shock and awe factor does it.

I agree the shipping would be a nightmare.... maybe Bezos is in on it and that is driving his plans for another shipping company. But with no other details, glad to know that this plan is all about shafting the poor... going to that well so often will result in a boy who cried wolf syndrome.

I'm all for any change to the SNAP program that insures the benefits are being used for healthy food to the families that qualify.

You know, like the single mother 0f 4 that has been with her boyfriend (who has a pretty damn good job) that lives with her, but uses a different mailing address? So that single mom can collect welfare, and food stamps/snap, wic, and whatever else she gets. They have $50,000 plus vehicles in their drive, in the home "she" owns. I'm all for weeding out the people that abuse military disability. I'm all for weeding out the cheaters/scammers, and helping those that really need it.

The Obama administration fostered military disability abuse....the new standard for PTSD disability is 1. Have you been in war 2. Do you have thoughts about you time in war....answer both...50% disability.....brother was in Iraq...he claims he is the only one in his platoon that is not on disability......and gets hounded to get his disability rating....soon new like a scam to me

I'm not just talking military disability. There IS great room for abuse there. I know 2 people that are on full military 'disability' that have no disability. I know one that is on 50%, and that person has NO discernible disability. NONE of them are disabled in any manner, physically or mentally.
But, I also know of people with no military background that - 1 at least - know what to say to a doctor to get disability money.
And there isn't 1 physical or mental disability present. But, free money is free money, right? Say the right things, act a certain way when with the doctor, tell them of the so called 'pain' you have, and get a check.
And I will say this: I have no idea what the percentage of scammers is. But they exist.
I even know of a guy that is proud to state "I'm on full military disability." and he didn't even serve in a war zone, let alone serve out of country. But, he's damn proud to let you know he's "full military disability". Even other vets laugh at him.

I was wrong, and apologize for it. I thought this one like the urban legend of the 10,000 dollar tax refund to people that are really unemployed. People can lie about being self employed and get an Earned Income Tax credit, but i f someone calls and reports them for fraud, they will be caught. You can't actually do nothing and get a tax refund.

Well to them, it is your fault, bro.
Trump always viewed you guys as nothing more than takers, just like the whole of the GOP and Fox News.
And yet you voted for trump and others anyway. Sorry but...hey gotta live with the choices you make in life, right?

Terrific, Now, tell me how to accomplish this? Give me details. Are these going to be cardboard meals. Will that at least taste good. Delivery, how do we do that? What if a box gets misplaced and doesn't reach it's destination? Does that family go foodless for the Month? Conservatives will do ANYTHING to rip the safety nets that they themselves helped put into place many years ago... and for what, to satisfy the needs of an idiot president and the FAR right. This is a dumb idea.

Again fear....he is not targeting legit claims....he is targeting scammers...do you honestly believe that everyone on SSDI is legit...hardly...I know plenty that are not legit and viewed it as a path to early retirement...ask yourself how certain counties have populations of disability that are 10% higher then neighboring counties or state and national averages.....and how %disability receipients tends to follow a counties % unemployment rate (ie hard time finding a job drives you to filing a claim as alternative).... you want this abuse to continue...fine

Could there be some abuse...... sure. Some people also take over two years to get approved and die while waiting to get approved which is also an injustice. Medicare now also gives you a hard time getting things covered that were covered for years.

I’ve watched them turn the screws tighter and tighter on us over the past 13 years. The last two or three years it’s been getting worse.

And think about it, If you think that people are likely to stay on welfare and be dependent, what do you think this does. Look, welfare, Snap and other social programs have holes and some people cheat. But it's just stupid to think that the bulk of those receiving those benefits are cheating. the stats don't bare that out. But hey, if Trump and Ryan and other far right folks say so, well, hell, we know they never lie.....
