Dawg.... it's really not bad, as 1700's Pop is concerned. And it's not Johann's fault. Blame GE.
In the early 70's they aired commercial for their new "soft white" light bulbs. Soft focus. Blonde Mom. Blonde daughter. Soundtrack: Canon in D. Thing took off like an Elton John hit. It's been a wedding staple for more than 40 years now- all because of that commercial.
And now... why I hate it.
I've probably played it between 350 and 500 times.
The.
Same.
Eight.
Notes.
Every time.

Oh the pain, of not being the melody. Try singing bass in classical music ... you will then understand why they preferred cutting off their junk and singing high notes ^^

If I had a time machine handy...I'd be composing a long winded letter to my former self about certain life choices and how to make the most of them or not to make them at all.

I learned to 'embrace the bass.'
Music is built from the foundation up, and I took pride in nailing down the basement. Cello's role expanded after the Baroque period, and by the late Classical/early Romantic period we had a really nice mix of soloing and support.
Besides... when you're a Baritone or Alto, you get to crack jokes like this:
