With the Parkland thread at 10 pages, the story that continues to be an issue, deal with "School Safety and the Gun Issue"Dick's Sporting Goods, A Top Gun Seller, Will Stop Selling Assault-Style Rifles The company said it would also not sell guns to anyone under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws. Posted on February 28, 2018, at 7:45 a.m. Cora Lewis BuzzFeed News Reporter Dick's Sporting Goods, a major sports equipment retailer, said it would stop carrying assault-style rifles and high capacity magazines,Wednesday morning. All AR-15's and semiautomatic rifles will be removed from its stores and website, the New York Times first reported. The announcement comes two weeks after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead, after a teenager opened fire on his classmates. The company also said it would no longer sell firearms to people under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws. The Dick's Sporting Goods Announcement link In the past week, major companies including Hertz, MetLife insurance, and Delta have also publicly withdrawn from promotions and business relationships with the National Rifle Association, but Dick's has taken a powerful stance as a major gun retailer, stating the decision comes explicitly in response to the school violence and the students' calls for action. We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens,” the company said in a statement. “But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America - our kids.” In the statement, Dick’s acknowledged that, “following all of the rules and laws,” they sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. “It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting. But it could have been,” Dick’s wrote. “Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and citizens." In 2015, Walmart said that it would no longer sell high-powered rifles in its US stores in the United States, stating the decision was due to lowered demand.

Media Statements link We at DICK’S Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their loved ones. But thoughts and prayers are not enough. We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organizing and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country. We have heard you. The nation has heard you. We support and respect the Second Amendment, and we recognize and appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible, law-abiding citizens. But we have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America – our kids. Following all of the rules and laws, we sold a shotgun to the Parkland shooter in November of 2017. It was not the gun, nor type of gun, he used in the shooting. But it could have been. Clearly this indicates on so many levels that the systems in place are not effective to protect our kids and our citizens. We believe it’s time to do something about it. Beginning today, DICK’S Sporting Goods is committed to the following: We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all DICK’S stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores. We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age. We will no longer sell high capacity magazines. We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly. At the same time, we implore our elected officials to enact common sense gun reform and pass the following regulations: Ban assault-style firearms Raise the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21 Ban high capacity magazines and bump stocks Require universal background checks that include relevant mental health information and previous interactions with the law Ensure a complete universal database of those banned from buying firearms Close the private sale and gun show loophole that waives the necessity of background checks We hope others join us in this effort to let our kids know that their pleas are being taken seriously. Some will say these steps can’t guarantee tragedies like Parkland will never happen again. They may be correct – but if common sense reform is enacted and even one life is saved, it will have been worth it. We deeply believe that this country’s most precious gift is our children. They are our future. We must keep them safe. Sincerely, Edward W. Stack Chairman & CEO DICK’S Sporting Goods

The GOP answer will be. Put more guns in schools and churches. Arm the Teachers the Preachers.

American schools should be protected just as County Court Houses are protected...nothing less! By their very purpose, county courthouses have criminals and accused criminals coming in and out of them every day... they have people standing trial for violent crimes.. they have people who may be having their freedom taken away for the things they have done.. and they have those responsible for making that happen. Schools have kids and teachers. I'm not sure I get why these things should be treated the same.

Schools have kids and teachers. And apparently they also have criminal gunmen who strive to be professional killers in our public schools.

Good for Dicks. I would hardly call them a top gun seller. At least not in my neck of the woods. When I go into Dicks Sporting Goods, the gun area is always a lonely place as they don't even have sales people manning the area. As far as retail goes, Bass Pro and Academy's gun showroom's are much busier. Gun shows are still where most weapons are purchased.

It's a masterful design and implemented by the NRA on behalf of gun mfg's for the sole purpose of selling more guns to the American public of all ages with little or no restrictions. And now it's being extended to teachers in schools and preachers in churches. Enjoy

Yes it has an effect, but of course you need large numbers of similarly minded people for it to be truly effective.
Find yourself a boycott list compiled by a liberal community or organization, and make it a point to support those businesses.

Just a thought, Dicks has made a decision. I'm not going to say it's right or wrong. They made that decision based on their own conscience.
But that decision, as with any other significant business decision, will come with consequences. Some may be good. Maybe a person that believes these guns should be banned will now start shopping there. Many who believe it's a bad decision will stop shopping there.
300 Million Americans, 5 Million NRA members and perhaps another 5 million gun folks that aren't members of the NRA but are unhappy about this decision, and you can readily see that the odds are in Dicks favor of continued success. Even if you add another 100 Million folks that are too old, too young or just don't care.
Still leaves about 200 Million folks for them to market too.
Certainly, these aren't exact numbers, but I bet they are close.
My point is, there are plenty of folks that buy Kayaks, knives, sports gear and clothing from Dicks that just won't care about the AR-15.
I can tell you this, when they decide to cut a product line such as this, they account for the loss of revenue in future sales plans. They'll look for other things to increase revenue.
I know folks in the NRA want this to come back to haunt Dicks, and it might, but I just wouldn't count on it being the dagger to the heart some may want it to be.

I pretty much agree with you. Dicks is gambling that by not selling AR-15's, and by not selling ANY gun to anyone under 21, it will benefit them. However, I read today, somewhere, that the AR-15's weren't for sale at Dicks anyway - only at Field & Stream stores they must own. https://scontent.ftol1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v...amp;oe=5B47C7C3

Great!
1 day.
Hey, I lost some $300 today (so far) on some bank stock I have.
But, you know, with a stock split a year ago or so, and with it going public, I'm still up about $5600 from a year ago.
How about we give this move by Dick's a few months at least before we draw conclusions.
They did what they saw fit. It might benefit them greatly, it might end up neutral, and it might hurt them.

I really believe they are on the side of the public school children and their safety is being put before their profits. Unlike gun mfg's, gun lobbyists and the NRA.

From Wikipedia on U.S. traffic fatalities: "About 2,000 children under 16 die every year in traffic collisions." Since the last school shooting: Number of children killed by guns in schools - 0 Number of children killed in traffic accidents ~ 90 and counting every day. On average 50 children in the U.S. die every single week in car accidents. Over 1600 children who are healthy and hopefully happy today will not be alive for Christmas this year. And same thing last year and same thing next year. For over the last 70 years. Virtually a random selection. 2,000/year. If you're a parent with a child under 16 years-old, your child is in the death by traffic accident pool. Why don't we spend billions of dollars on this?

Correction: They moved this way immediately AFTER Sandy Hook. At the Dick's stores (that just looks weird typing that). They still sold them, albeit at a different name store owned by them: Field & Stream. Kudo's to them for doing then what they did, and for them doing now what they are doing. It is their right and privilege to do so. They may be on the 'side' of public school children, as yo put it. What about the 56,000 other retail stores that sell these? They are anti school children, in your mind??? Unlike gun mfg's, gun lobbyists and the NRA. Yeah - mfg's, lobbyists, and the NRA are anti children. Just like automobile mfg's, dealerships, and the NADA are anti children.

I remember when the Liberals cried and cried about the poor Mentally ill folks being locked up in those institutions and how they should be set free into ordinary life.
Today the Liberals are crying to put them back as they armed themselves and are killing us.
The key to safety is we must stop listening to Liberals when they cry.

Trying to get caught up on the many topics in this thread. So let me get this straight:
NRA GOP types love them some Dicks, but they are mad about Dicks move, so they are shutting their wallets and cutting Dicks off? But teedub had a $100 giftcard to spend on Dicks that he had to go get before he could leave his Dicks high and dry?
Does this about sum it up or did I miss some Dicks facts?

Why don't we spend billions of dollars on this? We do. The auto industry has spent billions making cars safer, better restraints for kids of various ages, crumple zones, roll protection, airbags (front and side), now they are onto proximity sensors/auto braking, lane drift sensors, added turn signal lights to mirrors, etc... While the public has had constant campaigns about distracted driving, states have passed stiffer laws regarding use of cell phones, drunk driving laws are more severe, some places have grade restrictions on kids that if their grades aren't adequate they can't get their license, we now have phased in driving so that new drivers can only drive with family for a while, have to be off the road by a certain time, etc. Your turn, what has the gun industry done to promote safety?

Supported the NRA Eddie Eagle Program teaching gun safety to kids for like 100 years. Supported the NRA Security Training Programs. Supporting the NRA Gun Safety Programs for all gun owners.

Does this about sum it up or did I miss some Dicks facts? It sounds like you have your Dicks in a row. I'd only add that of course he spent the $100 giftcard. It wouldn't make much sense to not use the giftcard that has already been purchased, and what better to spend it on than ammo? It's useful, makes a statement, and has a low profit margin. As long as he is careful about gun safety, and doesn't blow his... oh nevermind.

You bring up a good point. Or several.
The NRA DOES spend a lot on gun education and safety. How much, I don't know.
Car safety: We just recently bought a new to us used vehicle. It has all kinds of high tech 'safety' things on it. Granted, I don't drive it much. (like, in the month we've had it - possibly 200 miles)
I can't stand the screen - the control scree for seemingly EVERYTHING, in the middle of the dash. Especially at night - it's too bright. I shut it off. Satellite radio? Who gives a rip.
I find my wife, even if she's driving, spending more time looking at the screen than she does the road.
I need more education and experience driving the thing, no doubt. Or, as I do, I just ignore all that crap as best as I can and focus on - get this: driving.
We also, (more me than her) don't use the vehicle improperly. We don't run stop signs, or stop lights, or speed. I guess what I'm saying is, we obey the laws.
Guns: Education is a good thing. Obeying the myriad laws about guns is a good thing.

Does this about sum it up or did I miss some Dicks facts? I don't shop Dick's anyways. Never have and never will. You can just keep your Dick's Store to yourselves. I mean if Dick's Store wants liberals to shop there that's fine because liberals can buy all the Dick's Stores products they want. I mean that might just be the perfect store for them especially the gay community. So let them go there where they will find plenty of blank shots to be fired because they don't need live ammo anyways. I prefer MidWestern Guns anyways. My gun comes home fully loaded and my wife says she loves to see me make things go BOOM! You know what they say, "If the wife is happy then everyone is happy." I love to keep my wife happy =)
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

So we’re once again back to comparing accidental car deaths to intentional gun deaths.
The fallacies displayed on this board is simply infuriating.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
- Theodore Roosevelt

My gun comes home fully loaded and my wife says she loves to see me make things go BOOM! After overlooking your typical GOP homophobia and weak ass attempt to slam libs; this quoted statement made me lmao. It's good that your wife supports your battle with low self esteem by telling you this.

Your turn, what has the gun industry done to promote safety?
Supported the NRA Eddie Eagle Program teaching gun safety to kids for like 100 years. Supported the NRA Security Training Programs. Supporting the NRA Gun Safety Programs for all gun owners. Which of those are mandatory before buying, owning, or using a gun? I assume all of those are free to promote their industry and keep it safe? Or is the NRA actually profiting off of those?
