I wanted to make a thread about my favorite player in the draft Shaquem Griffin. I think this kid could be a stud. His floor is special team all star and I don't know how high his ceiling could be. That's partly because he's a tweener at 6'1 233, which possibly makes him too small to play edge in the NFL, and partly because he is one handed. If he does play linebacker or safety, the question is how well can he do in pass coverage at those positions. Luckily for us, he's playing in the Senior Bowl this weekend and the Texans have decided to have him practice in a variety of positions.

Texans put Shaquem Griffin's versatility on full display

Quote:
MOBILE, Ala. -- Whether or not Shaquem Griffin can succeed in the NFL without a left hand isn't the only question coaches and scouts have about the UCF linebacker at the Reese's Senior Bowl.

They're also unsure about what position will suit him best at the next level, and Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien, coach of the Senior Bowl South squad, is obliging evaluators will all kinds of looks at Griffin, one of college football's most inspiring stories.

"We're trying to move him around. I think that's what the NFL wants to see, so we're trying to do things so everybody can get a look at him at safety, at linebacker, and maybe even as a DPR (designated pass rusher) and on special teams," O'Brien said. "We moved him around a lot (Wednesday)."

Griffin, in turn, didn't mind at all being jostled all over the practice field. After all, he's trying to become the first one-handed player in the modern era to be drafted into the NFL.

"It felt a little like a rollercoaster. I'm down in the dirt taking on 300-pound linemen, then I'm back in space covering small, fast guys. It's awesome. I'm smiling all over the place. I'm enjoying every single moment, every single position they put me in," Griffin said. "... We're going to get a chance to watch film and critique what I did. I guess I'm going to be moving rooms a lot, to get to all the coaches and get some feedback from everybody."

Griffin was born with a deformed left hand that was amputated at age 4. Despite that, he was an outstanding two-year starter at UCF under former coach Scott Frost, and was named the 2016 AAC Defensive Player of the Year. He was a pass-rushing linebacker for the Knights, however, and at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, he's undersized for that role in the NFL. So O'Brien is letting NFL scouts see him in various capacities as they begin to evaluate how he could contribute.

Griffin caught O'Brien's attention in more ways than one.

"What a kid. I've been impressed with him in the meeting room and on the practice field," O'Brien said. "He's got a way of playing relative to what his limitations are physically. He's got a way of playing that is really interesting to watch. He's going to be an interesting guy to evaluate. He's a tough guy, he's fast, he's good on special teams and a fun kid to coach."

Griffin said he's lost count of how many NFL clubs have interviewed him this week, but recalled three: the Oakland Raiders, New York Giants and New York Jets. While the Texans coaching staff is working with him on football technique, the scouts' questions are more centered around his personality.

"I'm pretty sure some of the coaches are really liking who I am as a person," he said.

Griffin said he hasn't yet received an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, but is hoping to get the opportunity to show NFL teams more at the Indianapolis event in early March.

He's doing very well at the Senior Bowl and his stock is rising. Watch him stop a goal line situation here . So the question is when should the Browns take him? #1? #4? I'm only slightly joking at that. I really think we should take him at the end of the 2nd or the top of the third.

Oh and does he love football? The media team asked him about it and his answer is illuminating. Below you can listen to him talk about he spent the days after his surgery that he received from trying to amputate his own fingers because a birth defect made it impossible to touch a thing without shooting pain.

Almost forgot to mention, his twin brother is Shaquill Griffin of the Seahawks?

I watched the guy twice this year, including the bowl game. What a great story. I hope he makes it in the NFL and I think there is a chance he will.

Saw a Sr. Bowl interview. A great kid seemingly. I think he hadn't been invited to combine. A late round special team stud at least who has the ability to surprise you with his defensive talent was my take away.
We need some ST gamers.

If the kid can play, he can play. His hand hasn't stopped him from playing thus far, so why should it be an issue now?

He should be evaluated as a player and given a draft grade from that. There are guys who are coming out with much bigger problems that half a hand.

I hope he gets drafted somewhere and becomes a stud!

Great for the kid. Wish this kid all the luck in the world. Not that he’s needed it so far.

Thanks for posting this. I ended up watching a bunch of UCF at the latter half of the season. Those kids in general were all heart and were so much fun to watch. Griffin had a great closing set of games and was really impressive.

Undersized LB's usually don't do well in the NFL... We saw what happened with Peppers...

I'm also not very high on drafting prospects in the first 2 rounds..

But a player is always a player, so I think in the end he is going to be OK.

Being undersized has nothing to do with how Peppers played last year. He was being played out of position and in a different zip code. He was a victim of the system. Bring in a true center fielder via FA or draft and move Peppers closer to the line and I am willing to bet he will become the player we all hoped he would be.

#1 pick. How did this kid not get a combine invite before the Senior Bowl?

Pepper’s was/is drastically undersized to play LB. 213lbs is incrediably light. And 5’-11” at that. Griffin is 6’ 227lbs, that’s not that undersized.

Not in today’s NFL.

I don't see him that high. He seems like a great kid, but the missing hand is going to be harder to overcome in the NFL than it was in college. I heard that some teams are looking at him as a special teams ace.

It will be interesting to see where he goes. I don't see him before the 3rd, and even that might be high.

Love the kid and his story. A great example to anybody who thinks something is "too hard" and opts for the easy way out.

On the film they showed and at the Senior Bowl he was all over the place. Yes, he can tackle and he is fast as hell (clocked at 23mph at the combine). The question for me is....can he catch if the ball comes at him and can he get leverage?

I don't think he will go that high, but I think he gets drafted.

Shaquem is on NFL Live today. He said he prefers a 3-4 to a 4-3 (smart tongue ) and he also said he has never seen the snow before. That could change in early May if he is drafted by the Browns frown

What do we even run these days?
Are we back to a 4-3 base now (again)?

We are a base 4-3.
