Report: AJ McCarron is Hue Jackson's preference at QB

Posted by Josh Alper on March 5, 2018, 10:26 AM EST

The Browns tried to trade for quarterback AJ McCarron before last year’s trade deadline, which led many people to connect the dots between player and team when McCarron was ruled to be set for unrestricted free agency last month.

That probably isn’t going to change between now and the start of the new league year on March 14.

Browns coach Hue Jackson said last week that he “would hope not” to be starting a rookie at quarterback in 2018 and Peter King of SI.com reports that Jackson’s “preference” for a starter is McCarron. Per King, the team would also like to select a quarterback in the draft under that scenario and groom him behind McCarron.

One need only look at Mike Glennon‘s experience in Chicago to see that such an arrangement offers little security for the veteran half of such a tandem, but it seems unlikely that McCarron will find a team that wants to sign him and isn’t also planning to take a young quarterback in this year’s draft. Given that, playing for Jackson — who was once McCarron’s offensive coordinator in Cincinnati — might be the preference for McCarron as well.

Hopefully A.J. McCarron is smart about this and goes to a team that isn't drafting a QB first overall.

How many teams really have an opening at STARTING QB? 5? Jets, Broncos, Browns, Vikings, Cardinals, Bills (maybe but looks like Taylor is staying). AND Cousins is taking one of those.

Out of those, the Jets, Broncos, Browns have all been linked to drafting a QB #1. Likely the only team MAYBE not drafting high would be the Cardinals.

My point is that AJ won't have the luxury that Cousings will have. He is VERY likely going to have to sign a 1-2 year deal knowing the team will or will VERY likely draft a long-term solution at QB.

And we are his likely best option to play in a system he knows and have a prove-it season to earn a lucrative long-term deal.

I agree. The only team with both an open starting gig AND without a high pick is the Cardinals. If I'm Case Keenum, that's where I'm headed.

So AJ played for Haley? We are going with his system. He didn't come here to run Hues and parrot his calls.

I thought I read somewhere that we were going to use Hues offense. Haley will tweak it, but not make wholesale changes. He will come up with the game plan for each game using Hue's offense. Can anyone confirm with an article/link?

Browns' Todd Haley will have a big say in the new QBs, use his own playbook and other takeaways

Haley probably wouldn't even had a phone interview given those parameters.

I stand corrected then. I previously read an article where it said the offense will still start with Hue. I'll see if I can track it down. It also mentioned that Hue and Haley have similar philosophies, run the ball, RPOs, etc. If that's the case, the main difference would be verbiage as stated in the article you linked.

I still think Mary Kay is a dumbbell.

Quote:
The only QB on the roster who would've been in Jackson's system for the second year is Kizer, and he will be fighting his way up the depth chart.

Kessler and Hogan are still on the roster and have more time in Hue's offense than Kizer. I guess they're on their third year, eh MKC? smh

I think that was another MKC article that was dumb as it could be. It will be Haley's scheme and he will incorporate some of Hue's concepts into it.

This won't be a popular opinion, but I really hope we don't replace Hue's system w/Haley's. I am not that fond of Haley's offense and I think Hue's is better.

I was happy w/bringing in an OC to relieve the load on Hue, but I won't be happy if we change our offense over to Haley's.

I'm not sure what offense Haley would be running as the one ran in Pit was a lot different than the one ran at other places.

The E/P playbook could run any system including Hue's and I wouldn't read too much into "use his own playbook". That could just be referring to the change in verbiage.

I regards to McCarron, I had a thought the other day that I figured I'd throw out there. We all know that we tried to trade for him at the deadline and it didn't work out. Did we try to trade for him because he was truly the guy Hue wanted or was he the best available at the time, and Hue knew we needed somebody/anybody? I guess what I'm saying is that so many are assuming that's who Hue wants because of the trade attempt. What if the choices now are such that McCarron would simply be a possible fall-back option if the "better" choices don't come to fruition?

I actually think about this a lot, and I believe that AJ is Hue's guy. I think they could have some success together but nothing outstanding. I'll be a little shocked if we don't sign AJ but not dissapointed.

How many teams do you think want McCarron as their starter? I've only heard of Hue. Not to knock the guy but has anyone heard of someone else wanting him?

Yes. I saw somewhere that he is the Vikings backup plan if they whiff on Kirk Cousins.

I would to. AJ is fools gold imo, but apparently the majority of everybody alive disagrees with me..lol.

I would take Bradford, Bridgewater, Keenum easily over AJ. Heck in our situation I would probably take McCown over AJ. He is the one guy I really do not want due to my personal feeling that he isn't a long term answer, and the money it is rumored to acquire him.

I'm looking at something here for Mccarron.

Everyone can chime in.

I'm seeing us signing Mccarron to a 3 year deal the likes of Glennon's from last year.

HEAVILY hit in year one where we can easily trade or release him in year 2 or 3.

Doing that. What QB at 1 OR 4 makes more sense.

Allen, Darnold, Smurf, Rosen.

I would be ok with that, but if AJ has options why would he sign that contract? Glennon knew when he signed what his job was for the Bears.....hold the fort down for a year until our rookie is ready. He didn't have a ton of options and took the money.

If a team sees AJ as a long term solution (and apparently they do) why on earth would he sign a deal like that. when he knows he's getting cut next year, or at the very least is a bench guy?

I like the idea, but I doubt AJ or his agent would go for it if the rumored market for AJ is accurate.

If we did do that I would go with the guy with the highest upside....Darnold or Allen. It would be a waste to spend 20+ million a year on a guy and draft someone like Rosen who is probably better than AJ now (one of the reasons I don't want a QB who thinks he is good enough to be the long. term answer is I want Rosen). With Allen/Darnold I think everyone agrees they need to sit a year, and a vet like that allows you to. give them a year or two maybe.

I will go on a limb here and say if we sign someone like McCarron we are drafting Allen/Darnold and want them to sit for at LEAST one year. There would be no other reason to tie up the amount of $$ it would require if you draft someone who could play fairly soon.

But I'm not. I'm on a Tablet. Why do they call these things Tablets? I take a Tablet every morning in the form of a VITAMIN.

These guys have EGOS. I will BEAT YOU OUT.

That's why Mccarron signs a contract like that.

I think the Vikings know that Case Keenum is fool's gold. They never fully committed to him as the starter. Even going into the playoffs Mike Zimmer said he would pull him if he was struggling.

If they prefer A.J. McCarron over Teddy Bridgewater and/or Sam Bradford it tells me that their injuries are more severe than we know and that they should not be counted on as more than backups.

Here's the link for this:

The buzz is that the Broncos will be in heavy on Keenum if they strike out on Cousins. Same goes for the Vikings with McCarron. In both cases, the team kicked around the idea of trading for the quarterback in question over the last couple of years, so there’s history there. Which means each player may be compelled to slow-play his market, if Cousins takes his time.

I'm thinking our Offer to Mccarron is going to be 3 Years MAX.

If Mccarron goes elsewhere for 5 Years as rumored, we'll turn to Bradford for 2 or 3 Years.

Which is fine because Darnold will be READY by Game 8. Hehehe.

McCarron is not the experienced vet I'd be looking for. Bradford would be more in line with my thinking...

I’m guessing he ends up with a contract like Glennons ... i think his was for 3 - 5 years total but it was really only a one year deal ... i said pre-draft last year they were in play for Trib cause Glennon’s contract was basically a 1 year contract because it was front loaded into year 1 ... cutting him cost them very little to nothing this year ....

AJ may get 2 “REAL” years instead of 1 but thats about it IMO .. The length of a contract in my eyes is not determined by how many years the contract runs for but by when it becomes real easy to cut them cap wise .... ie: when’s the gauranteed money’s either zero or minuscule ...

I agree. It's all in the contract structure. You pay all the real money over the first 2 years, the last 3 are team friendly.

We are still going to need a back-up once the new guy proves good enough. I am not writing the guy off, but I am not sure Kizer is the guy I want as back-up. We can wait a year to make that decision.

If he goes to NY he’ll $15 an hour ... rofl ...

He’ll get what the MARKET DICTATES or what one MORONIC TEAM offers him ... just like last year with Chi-town and Glennon ... there’ll be one team DESPERATE ENOUGH to skew the market ...

Its not really that hard ...

Who else was available last year?

This year will be more reasonable regarding these fringe FA QB guys. Cousins will get his gajillions, but the supply this year is much better. That should lead to less desperation moves.

I’m not sure about last year ... i know this year there’s a lot of options ... VERY UNUSUAL ...

Last year ... i think Foles signed with Phili (it may have been 2 years ago .. not sure) ... i think Keenum signed with the Vikes ...

I’m sure there were a fewer more “low level” guys like that ...

One thing we can’t forget ... Keenum was low level last year ... this year he’s bumped a level or two ... if Phili decided to let Foles go ... same thing ... he was a low level guy last year .. this year hes also up a couple levels ... crap .. Phili signed him as a FA either last year or the year before and now they want a #1 pick for him ... maybe hes jumped 3 or 4 levels .. *LOL* ...

J/C ....

While AJ might have fit Hue's offense, I do not believe that he fits Haley's offense at all.

I suspect we'll go a different direction.

For some reason I wouldn't be surprised if Mike Glennon gets a look from the Browns. (Not saying I recommend it. It's just a "gut feeling"!)
