Gut reaction, I don't like this trade. Intellectually, I have to wait and see. But if Shelton was so bad, why would BB take him? He was actually starting to come on last year. This simply smacks of Dorsey stamping his name on the team for its own sake.

He had 33 tackles last year... this can’t be replaced, easily ? If he was drafted by us in the 4th round would you all feel better? 33 tackles because he was taking on double teams and freeing up other guys to shut down the run

Couldn’t disagree more. Sheard had like 20 sacks in CLE before he was let go. Many of those guys who were let go who were mistakes to let go were good players while Shelton very average. Look at the numbers. This guy wasn’t an impact player. The comments here are unreal.

He was cut anyways

Shelton is most certainly an impact player. Except his impact doesn't show up in individual stats. He did the dirty work that allowed the LBs to rack up tackles and for the defense as unit to be tops vs the run.

Williams likes his D lineman to attack. That simply isn't what Shelton does. I like Danny but I understand what we are trying to do.

Ok. I suppose that makes a certain amount of sense but he was clogging up our middle just fine, IMO.

Always like Danny but never saw much of an impact for where he was picked other than standing up in the middle. I though we were getting Ngata and we got Ted Washington.. We can do better.

Obviously Shelton did not impress Greg Williams..they shopped him last year and didn't get a deal done.
Might be safe to conclude, Shelton is a misfit in Williams defense.
It does seem like there should be more to this deal, such as a player (Patriot) to be named later...unless Shelton did something that did not sit well with GW..something the fans are not aware of.

We gave them Shelton and a fifth for their third next year. I don't think another player is coming.

Bingo - not a scheme fit. 3-4 Nose Tackle on a 4-3 D. Like Shelton, but he was not a fit in Williams D. Plain and simple.

^ I think this is why we made the trade. We also could be trading some of our picks now for picks later. If you think about it, we won't be able to keep all our picks on the roster this year with all the draft capital we have. Is the 3rd rounder we received from NE conditional to performance?

This trade I didn't see coming. It's a head-scratcher and I don't like it (admittedly not knowing the inside story). Just have to put trust into what Dorsey is doing...

Heres the way I look at it, it's a combination of 2 things, Dorsey and the FO wanting their own guys and after evaluating (which we can't dismiss how good the staff of evaluators we have are), decided they needed to upgrade. But the other thing i think in play here is, you just went 1-31 the last two years. Noone on this roster should consider themselves safe.

1. Ray Farmer's masterpiece is complete.
2. Danny Shelton is a part time player. He was a part time player when we drafted him. It was always a bad pick.
3. Run stuffer guys like Shelton don't get paid, so he was likely gone after the season.

@AdamSchefter Following Following @AdamSchefter More Trade compensation update: Browns get a mid-round 2019 pick from Patriots, and Patriots get DT Danny Shelton and a 2018 draft pick from Browns, per source. We paid them to take Shelton. WTF are they thinking in Berea? This plus the Tyrod Taylor thing makes me SERIOUSLY question these guys' ability. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid move.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Shelton played hard. Don't see what we get here. NE just going wild for Shelton? Thanks for the motor!

Thatwould have been similar to what the comp pick would have been. I like a lot of what they have done, but this is a head scratcher.
I think people might be on to something that were talking about not being a fit in Williams Defense so there is that.

I think people might be on to something that were talking about not being a fit in Williams Defense so there is that. We would have had to put up with Shelton another season, plus "not sign any FA" the following offseason. I think Shelton will be a stud for the Patriots. I also think we are deep at DT. And with trying to trade for Quinn, I believe we are not done on the DL. We are going to add someone else.

Gregg Williams came here to run this D last year. After one year Shelton is gone. Coincidence? I think not. He obviously didn't fit into what Williams is trying to do. Too may fans fall in love with players who simply aren't impact players and emotions get involved. The NFL is a business.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

The league is littered with Shelton's.
We're looking for an Aaron. Donald type.
Consistently collapsing the pocket.
That ain't Shelton.

DS was a decent player for us. By decent I mean a little above average. He didn't live up to being a high 1st round pick. That doesn't mean we had to trade him but we probably have his replacement on the roster and with the expectations of FA signings we needed to clear roster space. JMO

We have won one game in two years and we unload a mediocre talent that was costing big talent money and the folks on here think the sky is falling. He is not. A building block. He was just OK at best. Everyone has gotta know heads were gonna roll from a team that has won one freaking game in two years. Keep ya pants on folks because it ain't over. Good grief.....

Surprised but not Shocked. They've been shopping him for a year now. Williams wants attacking aggressive versatile Players. Shelton doesn't fit that mold. Was he good at stuffing a hole...certainly. But so are a dozen other guys. Aggressive? Wellll..... not so much. Can't speak to the trade value because we really haven't seen where this is heading or heard any back room talk.
I really do like the Guy and Wish him Well!
