We have won one game in two years and we unload a mediocre talent that was costing big talent money and the folks on here think the sky is falling. He is not a building block. He was just OK at best. Everyone has gotta know heads were gonna roll from a team that has won one freaking game in two years. Keep ya pants on folks because it ain't over. Good grief.....
you would've though this guy was perennial all pro! Shelton was on a rookie contract, how was he costing big talent money ?

rumors are swirling around us trying to acquire Suh
would that be an upgrade? I've always hated suh. It cant deny his talent... not sure how I'd feel about this... I like Shelton but guy was average... no reason to hang onto average if you want to give a younger guy a chance...

I liked Shelton and wasn't a fan of this move, mostly because of the return. But Ogunjobi clearly is more talented and we will only miss Danny's depth.

Stupid, stupid, trade.
Young 2 gap DT's that don't loaf are hard to find. I get that he may not have fit here, but he had a lot more value than this. We would have got a 3rd round comp pick if we simply let him play out his contract. This is a massive fail.

Great. Now who is going to join Peppers in coverage?

I can't see any benefit to this trade at all. NE seems to like picking up all our first round defensive cast offs and take them to superbowls but yet we can't even use them correctly to have a winning record. If it ain't the player then it must be .... ?
Seems Dorsey is intent on just blowing things up for the sake of blowing them up.

I don't agree with that at all. He did a great deal to stop runs up the middle.

I liked Shelton, but never thought he was worth the pick. He improved every year. I think he is a better fit in a 3-4 scheme.
He was the DL graybeard. Now we have nothing but 2nd and 3rd year players. Unless we bring in a FA.

I liked Shelton too, but he was part of a team that went 4-44 over his 3 years, and I know it wasn't all his fault but things got worse every year 3 Wins, 1 Win, 0 Wins ... I am glad we have John Dorsey and a new FO who are trying to change things for the better ... I hope Danny has a long career but he wasn't meant to be part of this teams future ... GO BROWNS

I see it as a scheme thing. I'm sure they were happy with Danny's play. but he is a 3-4 NT, and probably a good one. I see this defense wanting more guys that attack. Ogunjobi, IMO, will fill the spot. He is more of a 4-3 guy. Meder keeps hanging on, I like him, and I think the fans do too.
I think they did Danny right by sending him to a team with a 3-4.
RIP, Jim

I don't see the full value but maybe Danny just didn't want to be here and Dorsey said "okie dokie" and here we are? I thought Danny was playing a lot better than the value we got here but it's not a total loss.
Brantley and Obi can step up here now.

With Danny Shelton traded to Patriots, every one of the Browns first-round picks from 2009 to 2015 is gone from the roster. All 10 of them. Alex Mack Joe Haden Phil Taylor Trent Richardson Brandon Weeden Barkevious Mingo Justin Gilbert Johnny Manziel Danny Shelton Cameron Erving https://twitter.com/WillBrinson/status/972523497443520512

I think they did Danny right by sending him to a team with a 3-4.
Because it's the Browns job every year to improve the Patriots defense with our first round pick right? A NT can easily play in a 4-3 defense. It's the undersized 4-3 DT that can't always switch to a 3-4 defense. I would rather have 2 NT's in a 4-3 defense both demanding double teams than just regular DT eating up one.

you would've though this guy was perennial all pro! This team never wants to put together a group and keep the team together. All the fans want is a mother lovin Team! OUR GUYS! Any other football franchise in the NFL has less turnover at all 22 major positions, and the coaches, and the Gm's and even the owners/ ceo's. Danny Shelton is one of "our guys". I don't sweat him being gone though, I don't wish to dwell on the past but get hopeful for the future. But anytime somebody is going to bring up the old oversaid line, " eww you guys were 2-14, or you were 1-15, and eww, you can't expect any kind of your team to come back" kind of thing. Any time I hear that, I ask, why/where was this person in the first place, if you didn't root for this team when they were 0-16, 2-14 then what do you care now. Danny Shelton was one of "our guys"! This Browns organization has a lot to be desired in making a commitment to keeping a foundation together of "our guys". Coley is better, Ogunjobi is ok, Brantley has upside, Meder barely spots the roster again, it's time to stick with a plan, (something). (look to the future) They shouldn't have cut Phil Taylor either. Back to year one. Winning in April!
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

You might, but guess what, Greg Williams does not.
He seems to prefer smaller attacking/penetrators from the DT position. Ergo, Shelton is no longer a Cleveland Brown.

I don't agree with that at all. He did a great deal to stop runs up the middle. I never said he didn't and I agree. But you asked what the benefit was... we got something for him as opposed to nothing next year.

Shelton won't be hard to replace. He has not played like the #12 pick in the draft.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Shelton was extremely underachieving as a,player . didnt have a violent streak and rarely made a stop when the defense needed it. he could be blocked and negated without the benefit of a double team. very over rated on this board much like Phil Taylor.he was outplayed by Meder and Oguejobi mid Rd picks none the less addition by subtraction. another draft bust courtesy of Farmer

Just reading all the comments....... Why didn't they just do this??? They coulda just did this!!! How come this??? Why dat??? Imo best "top to bottom" front office I've seen since they came back in 99. I think/thought highly of Heckert but he was a diamond in between 2 stiffs in Holmgren and Shurmer. Personally, I think, for whatever reason, they handled this trade in the best interest of The Cleveland Browns. I would imagine if asked "how come"?, "why didn't you just"?, or "why dat", they'd have the answer that made sense. Unless of course they're just not as "up to snuff" on NFL procedures(what they can actually do in trade situations, etc) as much as some posters here are. I'm gonna trust this FO until it gives me reason not to. This ain't remotely close to a reason. Just like the signs posted before roadwork begins in 1 mile. .................SLOW DOWN. Was never in love with Shelton the player... liked him as a person.
Drafted too high, underachieved.
Belichick won the trade, he may actually fit in well there.
Seems strange to "give him away" but there is usually more to the situation than meets the eye.
We're now at the top of Bill's list when there is a possible deal in the works.

Seems like a good move to me...

I get that he didn't fit. What I don't get is that we got nothing for him. He's a part time player with one year (and an expensive option year) left on his contract. The market was probably not great.

At first I wasn't sure about this trade, but I don't dislike it. Shelton was taking less and less snaps as the year progressed, and the Browns were seeing a lot of success with Coley and Ogunjobi. The final nail that put Shelton on the trade block was probably Caleb Brantley looking better as the year progressed.
Shelton was never the Pro-Bowler we hoped but he was a leader and a great personality who certainly was far from bad. I wish him all the best.

Who brought in Coley, Ogunjobi, and Brantley? *Ducks* Sashi Brown died so that we could live. (Also, don't forget about the Pierogi Prince of Parma, Jamie Meder. He will be able to fill in for Shelton as well.)

The market was probably not great. And that is why he didn't fit with us. He is a young full time player at close to a pro bowl level on a 3-4 defense though. He's making under 3 mil this year and we could have just let that contract expire and got a 3rd round comp pick for him. Even his 5th year option would be around 6 or 7 million. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me that there weren't better offers for him out there. I get the reason that we traded him, I just can't believe we couldn't get more for him.

Wouldn't he have to get a pretty good size contract in order for us to get a third round compensatory pick? These big guys don't get good deals in free agency because they don't sack the QB. Remember Dontari Poe a few years ago?
