Driving Accident Leaves Toddler Dead
Mother Was Reversing, Did Not See Child In Rear-View Mirror

POSTED: 9:18 pm PDT July 30, 2007
UPDATED: 10:32 pm PDT July 30, 2007

LAS VEGAS -- Police are investigating an accident that left an 18-month-old boy dead.

The incident happened Monday morning at the Oasis R.V. Park. Investigators said the mother was trying to move her SUV to another parking spot when she ran over the toddler.

"As she was backing up she felt something," said detective Bob Holland with Metro Police. "When she got out, she saw her son lying underneath the tire."

Detectives said the 34-year-old mom was just trying to get her suburban closer to the trailer and she thought her child was inside.

Representatives with the Safe Kids Coalition said these accidents happen more often than you think.

"We know that a lot of tragedies happen when adult supervision lapsed for just a very short time," said Jeanne Cosgrove, a registered nurse with the Clark County Safe Kids Coalition. "You always want to make sure you say to another adult, 'Do you have the child? I am getting in the car.'"

Representatives with SKC recommend that you never let your young children play in driveways or parking lots, or garages because it gives them a false sense that these are safe places.

Metro Police said it's unlikely the mother will face any charges.

This is just so incredibly sad. I couldn't even imagine.

It's a shame this woman will have to be executed, I wonder what will become of her other children if she has any....

I'm sorry, this is a very sad incident, and I wish the family well..

But dangit DC, that was funny.

I was thinking the same thing too. Does that make us bad people?

Should I add my disclaimer that the comment was not, in any way, intended to make light of the circumstances of this tragic accident.. merely to point out the utter stupidity of the "if you take a life, you must also die" viewpoint shared in the other thread... ?

This happened to a family that lives down a side street across from the main drag we live on last friday. The little girl was on the porch and when the babysitter (aunt) went to move the car, the little girl moved from the porch, got behind the car and was run over. She was 13 months old and did not make it through the night. The pain that these people are going through must be unimaginable.

This happens much more than anyone thinks. Since 2000, 1274 kids have been killed according to the website listed below.

Something very similar happened to a co-worker of mine three years ago this June. She accidentally backed up over her own 16-month old granddaughter and the little girl died.

It was unbelievably sad, my co-worker is one of the sweetest people you'd ever meet. It was an accident that could literally happen to anyone, but can you imagine having to live with that the rest of your life?
RIP Molly.

hunh... I dunno I always know where my son is I always took the time to pay attention. I don't know how people can run over their own kids. I know short term memory lapse but, I've never. I dunno maybe I just got lucky. I would kill myself if I ran over my son.

literally... he is my everything

It's called Darwinism. Morons (i.e. people who "accidentally" kill their own offspring) reduce their chances of passing that dumb DNA on.

Sad for everyone involved, sure, but that's the way it works.

Must.....resist....reply....

It's talked about a lot on the camping boards I read. Most people make their kids sit on the picnic table while they are unhitching or hitching up their campers. Accidents have happened though. It doesn't make someone a moron. Running over your own child would be devastating.

I live in a neighborhood with 48 million kids,....it is my darkest nightmare. I look, check, re-check, and over re-check before backing out. The mere definition of an accident is "preventable occurrence."

Every car I own from the one I have now til the last one I ever drive will have a rear view camera. Hopefully they will be standard soon.

Thanks Pdawg.
I drive a Chevy suburban

If you have little kids I think its worth the money to upgrade if you can afford it. At least the sensors that beep if something is behind you. I'd rather have a back up camera/sensors than a sun roof, or leather seats or some of the other upgrades people go for.

I checked out your public pics of your family. My favorite is where Hank is holding up the little one and they are eye to eye.

Oh same here, man.

I sometimes wonder: what happens if my concentration lapses for just a second or two and a kid runs in front of me when I'm driving?
It can happen to anybody and I don't care what anyone says, especially if they drive a great deal.

Anyone who says, "that'll never happen to me" is fooling him/herself, and probably is the one who should worry the most.

I'd say probably in the next 5 years it will be more standard just like everything else GPS, DVD players, mp3 players etc etc.

After seeing your sig... I think I might have to change my sig to a pic of him... that's a good idea!

j/c part

I still don't understand how people do that though... Maybe I am up my sons a$$ so much that I always know where he is and what he is doing esp if I'm movin a car or working on something. I live on the 2nd floor of a house and I have rules and reasons for everything dangerous. He knows where the meeting point is if there is a fire, he knows why not to touch the stove, what posion is he also knows where it is, not to stick his head out a window or lean against it, if I start a car he has to stand in front of the car off to the side where I can see him, so on and so forth. I made sure when he was old enough to comprehend that he was aware of these dangerous things.

Yes, good parents do as much as they can. But lapses can still happen, it doesn't make someone a moron, or a bad parent.
What my co-worker went through was awful and she's no moron, which is why I took exception to brownbomber's idiotic post.

turst me I know things happen... I've had my share of ER trips but I just... i dunno... the car thing gets me that's all. maybe it's because I am so careful with that...

I can only imagine what that would be like... the closest thing I had ever happen to me was one of my friends died in my arms a few months ago. That was really hard to take b/c she just kinda was standing up playing softball one second and the next she was convulsing on the ground and we were trying to give her CPR and keep her from swallowing her tounge. I wasn't right for a month over that...

Right...but you can't prevent every accident. You can prevent most with commen sense. A lot of people don't have that ability. And...kids are fast. One minute you see them, the next second they're gone.

I'm willing to bet that Danielle is actually quite normal. I am also glad that after 34 years of marriage to my lovely bride that I am not married to any NFL athlete!!!!

The disclaimer might not have been a bad idea. Not everyone reads every thread let alone every post. I knew what post you were referencing.

Horrible - horrible - horrible accident.

I still think back to one of the business law classes I had to take in college. The professor was a little bit nutty. But, he made the comment, "If you ever want to murder someone - use your car. If you kill someone with your car, you may never see the inside of a jail cell and if you do - it won't be for too long. Now, if you use a gun to kill someone... well, you will be in jail for a long long time."

If this mother had smothered her child with a pillow - she would spend 20 years in jail. But, because she used a car... no charges filed.

I am not saying she did this on purpose. I am sure she is devastated. This was a horrible accident.

I will stop rambling now.
