Per Ian Rapoport " One free agent to watch today: #Patriots LT Nate Solder. As of last night, it sounded like #Giants or #Texans… and there wasn’t a lot of optimism that he’d return to New England." https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/973879011163213824Wonder what this means in the Joe Thomas set of things. Oh and from Tony Grossi. Although he rarely has inside information it seems like "Editor's note: Tony Grossi covers the Cleveland Browns for ESPN 850 WKNR. Takeaways from the first day of NFL free agency (although nothing is official until Wednesday) … 1. Waiting on Joe: Joe Thomas said he would give the Browns an answer on his future by the start of free agency. So free agency unofficially started on Tuesday – dozens of players across the league reportedly agreed to terms with new teams – but there was no announcement from Thomas or the Browns. Is Thomas holding up the Browns’ plans? Hardly. The team reportedly agreed to deals with two veteran offensive tackles – Chris Hubbard of the Steelers (five years, $37.5 million, $18 million guaranteed) and Donald Stephenson of the Broncos (one year, $2.5 million). At an awards banquet at the Music Box Supper Club Tuesday night, Thomas declined to speak to quote-starved, waiting media and ducked out after the event through back channels. 2. The holdup: So what’s holding up Thomas’ seemingly inevitable retirement announcement? It’s all good. Recall that in November the Browns – then headed by Sashi Brown -- gave Thomas what amounted to “free money” as a gesture of their appreciation to his loyalty and the fact he was underpaid. He received a $1.5 million bonus at that time and a new $3 million added to the last year of his contract in 2018 in the form of a roster bonus payable on the fifth day of the new year, or March 19. If Thomas retires, the Browns conceivably could recoup a pro-rated portion of the bonus money. But if Thomas strings out his decision past March 19, he conceivably could earn the $3 million roster bonus and then perhaps retire after failing a physical at a later date. Although the Browns and Thomas have maintained there has been no decision made about Thomas’ future, there has been business conversation about how to handle his retirement financially. I’ve been told that the most likely scenario is the Browns will let Thomas keep the full $1.5 million signing bonus and Thomas will retire before the $3 million roster bonus is due. The team and Thomas are expected to jointly announce Thomas’ decision by the end of the week. GM John Dorsey is skipping pro day workouts of Baker Mayfield (Wednesday) and Josh Rosen (Thursday), largely due to free agency. 3. The heir-apparents: Although the Browns reportedly were still in the hunt for Patriots free agent Nate Solder – the only accomplished veteran left tackle available – their reported agreements with Hubbard and Stephenson gave them options to replace Thomas in the short term. Hubbard, 26, is an undrafted free agent success story of the Steelers who impressed many filling in at right tackle for Marcus Gilbert for 10 games last year. He’s undersized by today’s standards for left tackle at 6-4 and 286 pounds, but was given a starter’s contract, so he could move to right tackle. That would free up Shon Coleman to compete with Stephenson at left tackle. In the 2017 training camp, Thomas said that he could see Coleman as his eventual replacement. Stephenson, 6-6 and 312, is a former Kansas City third-round pick. Dorsey did not draft him – Dorsey arrived in Kansas City a year later – but he saw Stephenson make 26 starts at left and right tackle over the ensuing four seasons. In theory, Coleman and Stephenson could be joined by a high draft choice to compete in the 2018 training camp at left tackle. The rookie, however, would be a distant longshot." http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland/post/...e-thomas-future

At this stage, if JT hasn't informed the Browns his decision yet, the Browns just need to move on without him and cannot let him hold up the situation.
Plain and simple as that.

Plain and simple as that. Well, if we're out of the Nat Solder sweepstakes (either way), I figure, Joe can take all the time he needs to figure out where his body and mind are at in terms of playing the game. No need to rush him now

Perhaps he did tell them. Perhaps, considering the 2 OT signings, he told them a few days/weeks ago.......on the QT. If he's done, how would it benefit them to announce a month ago? I wish, but imo he's not coming back. Will always remember, being a season tix holder, his after draft "meet Joe T" get together at the stadium. Phil Savage, etc. Got there very early and we were 3rd and 4th in line. Yup. Very front table, 10' away from the goings on. Loved it. Got to talk to him......one liners back and forth, etc. One of, if not my all time fav Browns player. Great guy.

And we probably lost out on the Nate Solder sweepstakes for the sole reason of waiting. We've waited. I mean, we really have waited and provided patience. Do they need to look at other people? Do they need to spend more time on the offensive linemen in the draft? They need to start preparing and etc and this lag effect here is not helping.
If he really STILL doesn't know if he wants to play, or can play - just don't play. Now it's at the point of just becoming a soap opera/another pro athlete's stunt in Cleveland because Joe, even though I like him bunches, publicly said he'd make it known before free agency.
Granted, I think the Browns have been informed, just we haven't yet. But as I said, the case of JT hasn't informed anyone - probably time to just move on as if he said bye and stop letting him put any type of wrench in the plans.

And we probably lost out on the Nate Solder sweepstakes for the sole reason of waiting. Or maybe we lost out on the Solder sweepstates because we've been 1-31 in the past two years with Hue Jackson. Before that, we weren't much better the two years under Mike Pettine (especially the last year). We had a terrible season under Rod Chudzinski. And weren't any better before that. We switch coordinators regularly. And maybe his family doesn't want to move to Cleveland? Maybe he doesn't want to play in the shadow of a figure like Joe Thomas? We're not exactly a hot bed for free agents ya know. This guy is the top LT You're jumping to conclusions here amigo

well, either JT told us he's back, or we're targeting a LT in the first round after a trade back ... or we're screwed
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/03/browns_push_hard_but_free-agen.htmlBrowns tried hard for Nate Solder to replace Joe Thomas, but he opts for Giants
By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns tried hard to sign Patriots left tackle Nate Solder as the replacement for left tackle Joe Thomas, a source told cleveland.com, but Solder opted for the Giants instead.
The Texans and Patriots were also in on the bidding, according to reports.
Thomas, 33, is expected to make his announcement on his retirement today, and the Browns' pursuit of Solder would seem to indicate that he's retiring after 11 seasons.
Solder, who protected Tom Brady's blindside for the past six years, became the highest paid offensive offensive lineman in the NFL, with the Giants signing him to a four-year deal worth $62 million, including $35 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That's $15.5 million a year -- $2 million more than what Thomas was set to make with the Browns this season.
At a fundraiser on Tuesday night, Thomas indicated he'd announce his decision today.
"As far a decision goes, we're still kind of working through that process," Thomas said during the Cleveland Chapter of Positive Coaching Alliance's youth awards dinner at the Music Box Supper Club. "I'm keeping the Browns apprised of everything I'm doing and trying to make the best decision for myself and for the team, and when that decision comes, I'm not quite sure just yet, but I know hopefully it'll be soon, right around the corner."
He acknowledged that he's excited about the recent flurry of moves -- but they might not be enough to bring him back. "I think the future is really bright,'' he said. "Obviously, John Dorsey came here for a reason because there was a ton of cap space, a ton of money that you can spend under the salary cap on new players, and obviously the draft picks that we have are pretty impressive, really unprecedented to have the first, the fourth [overall selections] and a couple early picks in the second round.
"So although the talent hasn't been there for the team the last few years, the cupboards are not bare because of what we have coming down the pike in the next few years. For me as a player and for you guys as fans, it's a great time to be a Cleveland Brown."
As insurance against Thomas retiring, the Browns signed two tackles in Donald Stephenson and Chris Hubbard, but they've played primarily on the right side. Not looking good on the Joe Thomas Front at all folks

Yup, I think he's known he's done for a while. And the Browns knew too. We wouldn't have been chasing Solder if he was coming back.
End of an era.

Aint that the truth. I just wish we could somehow keep him a part of this team for when we finally get good. I'm sure he'll do something media related, but i'd love him as an offensive assistant or something. Like a Tackle Coach or something. Down on the field on Gamedays. Celebrating the wins with the team. Still a part of the guys

As insurance against Thomas retiring, the Browns signed two tackles in Donald Stephenson and Chris Hubbard, but they've played primarily on the right side. Not looking good on the Joe Thomas Front at all folks Depends what you consider good. Joe Thomas could retire tomorrow and he will go down as one of the all-time great players in the NFL. Eleven seasons including ten straight Pro Bowls, 7 first-team All-Pro, longest consecutive streak snap ever? A lot of people have been posting PFF grades lately; PFF has consistently had JT graded as the best or one of the best tackles in the league over his career. This is a remarkable degree of consistency that isn't even shared by most other elite players in the league. I'm sure he does not want to go out how he did, being injured and the team finishing how it did. The thing is though, this game is not good for your health. With what aging players go through, and what we now know about CTE and brain health, he's probably better off getting out now. He's made over a hundred million dollars in his career. His legacy is secure. The Browns are probably not going to be serious contenders this year. I'm just being realistic here-- the Browns went 0-16 and still have the same head coach. We have brought in a lot of good players this past week and will surely add more, but it will take time for the younger players to come into their own and the team to jell. Maybe he'd be more inclined to give it one more go if the team was a Super Bowl contender but I just don't see it. By the time the team is in serious contention, he will probably be done anyway with no equivocation. If he comes back, great. One less need for the Browns to worry about this season. If he calls it a career and enjoys his retirement, that's ok too. He has earned it and will go down as one of the all-time great Cleveland Browns.

Grossi can't know yet. Just ignore his career. To the best of my knowledge at this point in time he has yet to declare either way. Just not going to trust something this important to the likes of these jokers.

I'm not saying we'll do so this year, but the Pats won the Super Bowl in 2001 by adding a bunch of "crappy" signings, that their fans hated ..... but who fit what the team was doing,
I would suggest we wait till training camp before we consign all of the guys we signed to the dumpster.
