Too soon?
I have always been in favor of sliding Joel Bitonio over to left tackle, although I don't think that's realistic.
Joe Thomas has always said that Shon Coleman will be a very good left tackle.
Chris Hubbard? Donald Stephenson?
The draft does not have many great options.

There arn't any GOOD OPTIONS this season .. Just going to have to work through it and go into next season with LT at the top of the drat list .. Don't like the idea of moving Bitonio and Coleman dosn't have the feet or speed to play LT ..Maybe he can prove me wrong !

The draft does not have many great options. To be fair, Joe although great player, has never really endorsed the greatest of players in the past - I don't take his evaluation that high tbh. wasn't he big on weedon? I cant remember off hand, but there was a qb he loved that was pretty horrible.

No studs this year. Perhaps a trade down with our #4 to #7-8 and pick McGlinchey or Williams. This is a hole that must be addressed, but it should be remembered that there is only one Joe Thomas...

Drango wasn't terrible. Rod Johnson is an option, if he's capable. Coleman is a question mark, though I trust Joe if he thinks Shon can handle it.
I'm torn on Bitonio. If he's able to move over, there are some good guards in the draft.

Did Bitonio enter the draft as a top rated tackle? I don't remember why he switched to guard. Was it because he wasn't suited for tackle on the NFL level or just because he happened to get drafted by a team that had one of the all time greats already at LT?

I wish Solder would have come here, but maybe Hubbard or Coleman can do it "well" enough
If not, it looks like we're going to have to trade out of 4, acquire picks, and select a LT (Unless the ND Guard could play LT)
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Boston is far to the left as KC settles into the slot. Fannin is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Sampson are split in the backfield as the ball is hiked ... Here we go."

Yes. For his first season starting he looked pretty good and got better as the season went on.
Can he play on the left though?
Joe says he can, but I'm not as sure.

Bad draft for LT's.

I think Coleman is unjustly underrated by many on this board ...

I'm all for letting a guy improve and grow into a position and everything, but with the # of holding penalties he had on the right side last year, what do we think is going to happen when we move him over to the left?

Draft Analysis: "This is a great story. Teams that met with him, fell in love with him. He plays nasty. This is a guy who plays aggressively, but will need to home in his technique." -- Daniel Jeremiah
6'5" Height 35 1/8" Arm Length 307LBS. Weight 10 5/8" Hands
OVERVIEW: Many prospects in this draft class have faced adversity, but few have looked cancer in the eye and beaten it. In the spring of 2010, Coleman was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Over the next two-plus years, the top 10 offensive tackle national recruit worked at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (located in his hometown of Memphis) to treat and defeat the disease. Coleman was finally cleared to play in the spring of 2012 and redshirted in the fall to get back into football shape. The following year he completed the comeback by playing six games as the backup to 2014 NFL Draft No. 2 overall selection Greg Robinson at left tackle. The past two seasons, Coleman has held down the blind side spot, starting every game and receiving second team All-SEC honors from league coaches. Casual college football fans and NFL scouts alike can see his frame and excellent length and agility, but should be more impressed by the mental toughness he’s shown over the past few years. Analysis
STRENGTHS: Very long and gets maximizing disruption from arm length. Above average play strength with powerful upper body. Extremely physical with backpack full of nasty with him. Drive blocker who uproots defenders and creates space. Latches onto defenders with big, strong hands. Gets chippy as run blocker and looks for aggressive finish. Pass sets are generally balanced with decent slide to the edge and ready hands. Has ability to redirect inside against stunts. Very heavy hands. Uses his punch as a measure of force and intimidation. Fires his hands from inside his frame and lands with proper placement. Able to play in space. Relatively smooth climbs to second level and mirrors oncoming traffic looking to engage. Has played on left and right side. Held his own against Myles Garrett from Texas A&M losing badly just once on inside spin move.
WEAKNESSES: Base will get too wide hindering balance. Leans into contact in pass sets and consistently plays with weight too far forward. Feet deaden when punching, opening door around the corner. Inconsistent footwork in general. Lunges at rushers trying to turn corner rather than sliding feet into position. Has habit of leading with head down and will miss run targets at times. Got away with holding in college. Doesn't bring feet thru contact in run game and has trouble sustaining without mauling. Needs hands to control defender rather than just punish. Will turn 25 as a rookie after sitting out two years overcoming a leukemia diagnosis in 2010.

J/C...
Drango was a tackle in college IIRC and played above expectation when thrust in. With an offseason and prep for the nuances he may be a viable starter.
In the draft, Brian O'Neill out of Pitt is intriguing. He's one of the few who seems to have the feet and athletic ability to play the left side (converted TE) but he will need to get stronger according to reports out of the Senior Bowl. He lifted 22 reps at the combine.

Just, me, I don't really care what the draft analysis says. We watched 16 games of his last year. I think he improved throughout the season and is still a raw player, but he is gifted athletically. Just has to cut down on the penalties and get more consistent. He was very up and down. But this is only his third year in the league he's going into. I'm certainly not ready to write him off

Shon Coleman has consistently said that he hasn't felt comfortable on the right side, but that he has been working to improve. He has said that he feels much better plating on the left side. Now he'll get a chance to prove it.

Now he'll get a chance to prove it. Sure hope so. We can really use some decent play on the left side. I'm not for panicking and reaching on one of these tackles though. It is what it is. Hopefully between the three of them, one can figure it out

Mike McGlinchy with the #1 pick.
Don't. Look. Back. From what I've read (not that much, really) this tackle class STINKS. After McGlinchey, they're mostly right tackles and converts to guard in the pros. I don't WANT to use a first on McGlinchey (in whiny childlike voice).

Any opinions on Mr Jones ??
Jamarco Jones
An All-Big Ten selection in his first season as Ohio State’s starting left tackle, Jones could see a rise similar to that of former Buckeye and current Detroit tackle Taylor Decker. At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, Jones possesses the size — and ability — to become a first-round pick.

FYI, the LT discussion got bumped in the Draft forum.
But I've read Jones ranked in the 3 - 4 range. But I've heard some really don't like him and would put him in the 5 - 6 range.

Look even as is, we're not TERRIBLE now that Joe is officially not playing anymore.
Coleman is still pretty raw and I actually think the man is going to be even better come first day of camp.
Drango stepped in there and probably had not even the faintest clue he would be doing so, and the position didn't crumble. It was NOT an exploit against our line.
I don't know much about the OL we just signed, but by all accounts it sounds like he'll compete.
... and the draft.

Any one know much about Kolton Miller, UCLA? I know in general the Bruins o-line was not great but, I thought I heard some good things about this kid. His combine numbers were good and he huge. Might be there at the top of 2.

He's talked up most of our QB's too. How has that worked out for you? lmao We signed Colemans replacement by giving him a 38 million dollar contract. Anyone with a set of eyes saw Coleman wasn't even a serviceable RT last year which means he's in no way ready to play LT this year. And for those posting his scouting reports? That means zero AFTER you're in the NFL. For those who believe that kind of drivel after a guy has been in the league for a couple of years I have some prime swamp land in Florida to sell you. lmao

I think Coleman did fine enough in his first stint as a starter to not get tossed on the scrap heap... I think he should be considered for the RT position. He could continue to grow into the role.
Anyone expecting him to step into the LT position is just wanting to watch a train wreck.

We have no LT on the team. Coleman was adequate as a RT, but he isn’t a LT. He’s being moved there because Joe retired, and the only OT they could lure in FA is a RT as well.
This won’t be pretty.

He was a LT in college, but i guess that does not matter. Actually it doesn't. Very few guys who play LT in college transition to LT in the pros. Coleman doesn't possess the skill set to play LT. He certainly lacks the footwork. And actually Coleman has not been moved to LT by the team. If you look at the link they state that it's simply a guess on their part. And it's based on who we have in the building now.

"Shon Coleman will move from right tackle to left tackle this season, GM John Dorsey said. Dorsey said he was excited to see just retired Joe Thomas in the team’s training facility working with Coleman on techniques at left tackle. “You can see that (Coleman’s) committed and looking forward to the challenge,” Dorsey said of Coleman’s switch to left tackle."
Just saying...
