Are you under the impression that if you never have another gram of sugar again in your life you’ll be healthier?

I wonder if it’s true?

Who cares?

Sweets are one of life’s great joys.

Cookies, candy, cake, pie, donuts, flavored coffees, flavored cereals, sodas, many adult drinks. (can you say “Mudslide”, “Tequila Sunrise”, “Hurricane”? And of course beer.)

Don’t forget the mother of all sweets - ICE CREAM.

I could eat a trough of ice cream every day. But I can’t because of the “five-to-one ratio”. (somehow I gain 5 lbs for every 16 oz bowl of ice cream)

Hey, it’s got bananas, cherries and nuts in it.

"OK little girl. Put it down right here and go away."

Now, I’m thinking the two big health problems with a lot of sugar intake are weight gain and tooth decay.

And of course being overweight invites a whole myriad of health problems

So I brush and floss my teeth every day like a good boy.

And I’m doing OK on the weight. Probably 20 lbs over “my ideal weight”. (which is definitely skinny, I’d be happy if I was permanently 10 lbs lighter - within easy reach).

Is that it? Only tooth and weight issues? Because if it is, I’ll go for another walk. I’ll take some floss with me.

I was blessed with a metabolism that enabled me to consume as much sugar as I possibly wanted, with no issue of weight gain. Yeah, probably not as good for the teeth.

In my 30's now and I can't eat like I use to. I will say, regardless of the situation, you put a Hersey bar with almonds in front of me and I'll destroy it lol.

Things like soda/pop I've cut out a lot. They're more of a treat here and there than anything.

Ever had a symphony bar? Almonds and Toffee. Once the wrapper is opened just say goodbye.

I'm a sweet-o-holic. Gimme-gimme-gimme. I try to control myself, but it's hard. But I try. Sometimes.

Those freakin Lofthouse cookies and Orange Hostess Cupcakes, I could eat millions of them.

My wife, she's all about the spicy, salty.

It’s my weakness. Especially good quality chocolate. Man that stuff is amazing.
Baked goods too. I don’t eat a lot of Hostess type stuff but the bakery section at the grocery gets regular visits.
I cut out almost all soda. Never was a huge drinker really. Now only occasionally will I enjoy a Mexican bottled (real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup) Coke.
I like my coffee with sugar and half and half. I drink a fair amount of coffee.
Our office has a candy dish that I tap each morning before I leave to do my work.
Our office often has sweets delivered. Boxes of chocolates or cookies, etc. Gifts from families in appreciation of the care we provided. I hit all that.
Thankfully my metabolism is such that I just burn it up. I’m tall and thin. Though if it did effect my weight it may be better for me in the long run. Vanity can be a strong motivator to change bad habits. As of now I have no incentive to stop other than the obvious known health issues.

I had to cut out sweets and carbs about 10 years ago. I was a fat kid, always, and eclipsed to about 320 a year or so after college, and I'm 5'8". I worked for a newspaper at the time and they had a biggest loser contest, so I went on an atkins diet and ended up losing 160 lbs. I'm now at a comfortable 180 lbs, 10 years later. And it's allowed me to marry a hot wife and have three awesome kids.

But I still have weaknesses like jelly beans and donuts!

Never met a candy I didn't like.

Sour patch kids, sweedish fish, gummie worms, jelly beans, chocolate bars, my all time favorites are starburst and skittles. I could eat the big bags of those in two days time.

And pop, don't even think I wasn't drinking about 3-4 cans of coke a day.

I have just recently cut those kinds of sugars out of my diet though. about two weeks ago. I must say, I feel awful since lol.

I have actually pretty good on the diet for 2 weeks, no notice yet in any weight loss, but I feel really sluggish. I was under the impression that I was going to feel better??? Maybe just needs to detox first lol

Sugar is addictive. You’re experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Cut our grains too if you really want to excelerate weight loss though. Look up the NSNG diet. There’s a guy named Vinne Tortarich (could be spelling his last name wrong). He’s really helping a lot of people lose weight with his advice.

Sour patch kids...man I can eat a mile of them. They’re vegetarian too therefore a lot of my vegetarian friends fiend for them. In the summers when we build art there’s ALWAYS sour patch kids on the job site pushing us along with their sugary goodness. Damn things.

The high from sugar is as addictive as heroin for some people. It's especially true for diabetics. I swear I can just sniff sugar and get a rush from it.

Treat sugar as the danger it is. Once you have that one piece of candy too much you're doomed. Diabetes is hell. Forget the needles and shots everyday. The worst things are the never ending thirst and the severe hunger pains.

When I say never ending thirst, I mean you are ALWAYS thirsty. You always have a dry mouth even right after drinking a bottle of water.

You can diet and do well and then all of a sudden your body will cripple you with hunger and sugar cravings so strong it can bring you to your knees. Then you cave and drink a mere glass of orange juice and the next thing you know the bottle ran dry and your body says you HAVE to have more NOW!!!

Then because your drinking so much fluid it depletes your salt index and you get severe cravings for salty food.

SUGAR IS POISON!!! Stay away from it if you can because not one good thing some from sugar. The day you put that last straw on the camel's back with sweets and become diabetic you will understand what hell on earth is like.

It does take a while to wean off of it because sugar is very addictive. Try eating an apple or orange when your feeling sluggish but stay away from juice. Apples are the best because their high fiber stops a lot of the sugar from absorbing. Avoid grapes, raisins, figs, plums, and prunes though because they are super high in sugar.

Adding a tablespoon or two of cinnamon to oatmeal or chilli can help a lot too.

If you have to cave in then eat watermelon or red bing cherries. They are very sweet but have anti inflammatory properties that can help to curb really strong cravings. They can also help with joint pain if you eat them regularly, especially the cherries.

My two favs:

Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate bars (giant size). I go on a dark chocolate frenzy for about two or three months every year, right around the new year... (More like 3 months.) I have to have dark chocolate every day. Only 960 calories per bar. laugh I just had one a bit ago. I'm AMPED.

Also:

Cake from Giant Eagle. I LOVE their cake. Don't have it too often but i savior the moistness and sweetness of it.

Hey that's not bad.

Still room for plenty of recommended, daily caloric intake:

Lettuce (no dressing)
Half a hamburg bun. (just bun)
Toast (dry)
Stick of sugerless gum
Water

I eat some, just smaller amounts and earlier in the day. i do not need any at all, but I get cravings some time.

"Don't arrive in heaven hungry!" may indeed be words to live by. I am getting into fruit more. Not certain I can believably say that great fruit beats bad chocolate, but my research continues. I just haven't found much bad chocolate so far.

An old guy I respected (we called him 'Pops' affectionately) also beat on this: "Eat your dessert first!" And he did may God bless him and rest him.

Nobody says "Eat your dessert or you will get no vegetables." So, don't skimp, but do not overdo.

Not a big sugar eater.

As a kid I loved Bit-O Honey and Nibs licorice.

Now, a slice of lemon cake is a nice slice of life every few months, the same, and apple pie.

I do like ice cream, but only eat it once a year at the ice cream social. That is a event at the local Farmers Market...usually mid July.

Every now and then, maybe twice a year we go to a movie. Sour patch candies are good, though I have to be careful....I have had some dental work in my days. Kind of like modern day Jugyfruits. I liked those as a kid as well. Payday's. Those were always good. Do they even make those anymore?

As for Soda, I might mix a little diet Canada Dry with some bourbon now and again, but mostly just a cube of ice, or a little water with a cube of ice. I can't remember the last time I bought a Coke to swig down. 10-12 years? Maybe longer? Just a bottle of water or a Gatorade of some traditional flavor.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

When I got to have something sweet and I am willing to risk death for it then I have to have a Reese's peanut butter cup Blizzard at DQ with hot fudge added. Large size of course. The darn things will be the death of me yet.

Coincidentally I bought a quart of this coffee creamer today.

A couple tablespoons of this in my morning coffee makes it worth getting out of bed and going to work.

Damn. Is it Friday already? Only three days 'till Monday.

be very careful if diabetes runs in your family. Sugar and fructose (from fruits) can be very dangerous.

Whoever invented high fructose corn syrup ought to be afraid of themselves. It has invaded so many foods, and it is so bad for you.

One thing I like to do is if it calls for a cup of sugar i add a cup of pureed fruit instead. works great for pancakes especially with peaches or pineapple.

Of course. I forgot about diabetes. Something about the level of sugar in your blood. (too high or too low) Also something called insulin.

Fortunately, I don't have a genetic predisposition. (I don't think anyone in my family has ever been diagnosed with diabetes.)

That alone doesn't let you off the hook though.

Diet and exercise of course help. (lowers your risk?)

I'm not sure of the facts, but I think diabetes can be one of those "out-of-the-blue" diseases.

Regardless of your family history, what you eat, or how much you exercise or weigh, not 100% preventable.

I don't know, what? maybe 80% preventable. (I just made that up - I got kicked out of medical school)
