I want to mention a few things that were stated by Darnold's college coach and Jordan Palmer who has known him since he was fourteen.
Coach. "He is the best one on one leader I have seen. We had Ju Ju as a receiver. Strong personality. Sam got with him one on one. He got the best from him and many others."
Palmer. "You watch Sam's game you can see and feel how the team loves the guy and believes in him."
His record. 24 - 4. 12 - 0 at home.
He has won big games with great play when needed.
He works hard to improve.
All things considered. Really I don't know what else you can want?
All I know is that I am really tired of the qb debates. I don't feel people are trying to educate themselves and look at things rationally. I think they had their minds made up at some point and dug their heels into the sand.
I was going to start a thread about which qb attributes were the most important for qbs and how each of the top qbs graded out in each category. I thought about it after reading ed's grades where it was like each category was equal. I was hoping for it be a true educational thread, but you know what..........I don't think the posters who are posting a lot are interested in being educated. This reminds me of the Jimmy G threads last year where so many people said he sucked and didn't want to hear why some of us thought he was a guy worth going after.
Yeah Bonefish, although I am a Mayfield believer I just don't see that happening.
It looks like Darnold will be our guy and I agree he should be.
I just remember at the beginning of the season people were gushing about Darnold being the obvious #1 overall pick in the draft if he came out in 2017 (which he couldn't).
Well its a year later and the fear was he was going to opt out of the draft and wait another year. I am pretty happy we are going to have him as our franchise QB, I will be shocked if we take another. Even Mayfield, happy but never the less shocked.

I was watching the video above and it reminded me of some gifs I saved from the USC vs UCLA game that haven't posted.

I've never heard the playmaking ability described the way Jordan did above its an interesting way to describe it...the ability to create time and space.
I really love listening to Palmer talk about him ... very educational on multiple levels ...
I really hope we can afford to let whoever we pick sit for the entire year ... if TT stays healthy hopefully he’ll be consistent enough to keep the rookie on the bench for a year ...
By everything I've been reading, the Giants are hoping we take Allen or Barkley. They want Darnold, but will go with either Barkley or Chubb, if the Browns take Darnold.
The Cleveland Browns - WE KNOW QUARTERBACKS ( Look at how many we've had ... )
I heard that Troy Aikman was at Darnold's pro day and at teh end was overheard saying to someone, "Well the Giants are now on the clock"
love that quote
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
I've thought Barkley but seen some stuff about the ND Guard. Can't quite figure that out. I figure it's SB or Rosen at two.
If Nelson could play LT he would be my pick at 4 and I would think about him at 1 ....

I like the fact that when he is moved from the pocket his eyes are downfield. That makes a difference and is something that has been missing for a long time.
Plays do not always turn out as scripted and a QB that can handle the situation is a rare commodity.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!…. That did not age well.

I dunno. Give me the guy who can find his target, get it out of his hands quick, and get the offense down the field.
That's what Rosen will bring. That's what the best QBs do.
And I hate bad-mouthing another guy, but I am pretty tired of all the Rosen micro-scrutiny and bashing while Darnold is the telfon man.
I think he has the following issues:
--He abandons the pocket way too early. ed showed some vids where he left the pocket and made big plays, but often times, his leaving the pocket resulted in negative plays. Like Herbsteit said, he looks to leave the pocket rather than throw from the pocket.
--His footwork when pressured is horrible. His feet get out of whack and he either ends up retreating way beyond the pocket and making himself vulnerable to edge rushers or he throws off balance and throws a ball that is up for grabs.
--Dude is a turnover machine in college. Yes..........college. Can you imagine what NFL defenders will do to him?
I'm sorry......I really didn't want to make this post, but I am tired of all the negative Rosen stuff and all the fluff thrown this guy's way.
I actually liked Darnold more from last year through most of this year. He was my guy. I read the Rosen BS and believed it. Then, I watched the USC/UCLA game and I said.........."WOW!!!" Rosen was so much better at the NFL things. Thus, I started to research both.
While I think Josh Rosen is clearly the better QB. I'll be alright if we go Darnold. I'll be even more alright if we go Baker Mayfield.
Rosen is my guy. But that doesn't mean that the next two in line don't stand a good chance to be successful.
They all have different strengths. I prefer the whole package of Rosen, but I'll feel okay as long as we get one of those three.
I feel even better about the idea of Darnold now that we just got Stanton. Pretty much would guarantee him a year to sit on the bench and learn. I don't think Tyrod Taylor beats out Josh Rosen in camp. Not a chance. And I wouldn't be surprised if Baker Mayfield beats him out too.
Some folks don't like his schtick. But it's hard not to believe in Mayfield.
I feel better about all three of these guys than I did about any of the guys last year. I think I'd put Jared Goff right around where I have Josh Rosen. And I'd put Darnold and Mayfield around where I had Carson Wentz.
Rosen IS my guy. But, if we don't get him, I can accept that. Especially if it's Mayfield or Darnold. So far, I've been pretty impressed with our Front Office. Wish they signed Pryor. But otherwise, I've been impressed
I agree with you that Josh Rosen is the best pure QB prospect in the draft. But, I do think it is close.
One thing I like about Sam Darnold is how he turned USC around. In 2015 USC finished 8 wins 6 loses. Then started off 2017 1 win and 2 loses. Benched their QB and brought in red shirt Freshman Sam Darnold and finished the season 10 wins and 3 loses. He started his starting career in week 4 of the college season and finished with 9 wins and 1 lose including a Rose Bowl win and named game MVP. Then last year lead USC to 10 wins and 3 loses. He made the team better. That is what QB's should do. Make the team better by making the players around him better.

I just don't see any way they turned down the Jets offer for anything except a QB. Nelson would have almost certainly have been there at 6, and with trades,. the top 3 or 4 QBs in this draft could well all be QBs.

I'm going to be happy with our pick if it's Rosen or Darnold. I've stated repeatedly that my only knock on Rosen is the concussions. That's all. My only knock on Darnold is that he doesn't look like the pure passer that Rosen is.

Agreed. That or Bradley Chubb (a pass rusher). But I still think a QB.
QBs will go 1,2,3 in this draft. If we're lucky and get an offer from Denver, maybe 4 as well.
I've decided I want our number 4 pick to be Saquon Barkley. It's time to bring the offense to its next gear.

Well clearly it can't be a solid offer otherwise, if the Giants liked it, they'd take it.
Unless there's a QB the Giants are waiting to see if we draft. So it would be contingent on the guy the Giants want, not being there and the guy the Bills want being there.
But if the Giants want to trade down with Buffalo, and Buffalo has a solid offer, no reason they wouldn't make the trade before anything changes

Bill Walsh said as many as 1 in 5 plays ends up in a scramble....for QBs that can't scramble some of those 1 in 5 plays are lost plays...incompletions, sacks or worse.
The ability to make improvisational plays in the face of a free rusher imho is a valuable skill.
It maybe a matter of preference but it definitely a trait that I value.
