Jamar Taylor has been a hot button topic among Browns fans since the start of the new NFL year. Ever since adding 3 new corners in free agency the knee jerk reaction has been that we now need to cut him.
I think this is a terrible idea. I have argued and argued with people proclaiming this need over and over.
Here is the breakdown of why I just can't fathom the need to cut him:
He is 27 years old, playing one of the most valuable positions on the team. When playing opposite Joe Haden in 2016, he was viewed as an above average corner. PFF gave him a grade of 82, which was top 25 in the NFL. He played in 15 games and started 14. He played so well, he was rewarded with a new contract.
In 2017, he was thrust into the #1 cornerback role, and undoubtedly struggled. He was overmatched, and was keyed on by opposing quarterbacks when he was matched on the opposing teams #1 wide receiver. The Browns lackluster pass rush did little to nothing to help him out, and the poor safety play left him on an island.
Despite all of this PFF still gave home a rating of 74. not at all great, but given the circumstances pretty good.
As far as money, we are still $60+ million under the salary cap. His cap hit this year is $5.275 million, and cutting him would only save us $3.5 million this year. Money that we don't "need to" save.
He is durable, only missing 4 games in 3 seasons. In those 3 seasons, he has averaged more than 80% of snaps, and played in more than 90% last year. Durability is a VERY underrated stat in football. Not only does it keep you on the field, it prevents the front office from having to scour the trash heap for a fill in player during your missed time. It aids in the continuity and chemistry of the team.
So, in my eyes, cutting Jamar Taylor would be an absolute waste. No he is not a #1 corner. That has been proven. With the players we have added, I believe he will be a spot duty player, spelling guys for rest, and playing in some packages against 4 and 5 wide receiver sets. In this role, I think he will again thrive and be a valuable asset to the team. You don't cut valuable assets just because you have added some pieces ahead of him. You keep the asset and use him in a different role.
But that is just my opinion.

I'm under the mindset of keeping every corner we have and let them all battle come camp. Full, fair and legit competition and those who remain are those who play/obtain a roster spot.
It's as simple as that. I don't have any favorites, Taylor included - I just want the best available here and playing.

New additions could spell the end of Jamar Taylor with BrownsBy: Jeff Risdon | March 24, 2018 9:53 am ET The Cleveland Browns secondary is in the midst of an overhaul. Starting cornerback Jason McCourty is gone, traded for a song to New England. Damarious Randall is the new starter at free safety, moving Jabrill Peppers to the box safety role. Randall also has experience at outside CB and could mix-and-match in that capacity too. Cleveland then signed T.J. Carrie to a contract which indicates he will be given every chance to be the other starter at outside CB. He brings size and speed to the Browns. So does another newcomer, Terrance Mitchell. The overhaul continued when E.J. Gaines signed. Statistically the top corner on the roster and eminently familiar with Gregg Williams’ defense from their time together with the Rams, Gaines shoots above the incumbents on the depth chart. It could spell the end for last year’s other starter opposite McCourty, Jamar Taylor. His two seasons as a starter in Cleveland have not gone as well as hoped, and the recent moves indicate the Browns realize this too. His role as a starting outside CB definitely looks like past tense in Cleveland. Carrie and Gaines are both bigger and offer stronger track records. Taylor could kick inside, but the Browns are already set there with Briean Boddy-Calhoun, who has been one of the NFL’s best slot corners over the last two seasons. Last year’s fourth-round pick, Howard Wilson, is bigger, younger and cheaper depth with more upside — if he’s healthy. That leaves little room for Taylor. His $1.5 million dead money salary cap hit is no obstacle for the Browns, who remain awash in cap space. It would not be surprising, not at all, if Taylor isn’t on the Browns when they enter offseason minicamp in May…if not sooner. Link

I agree with your post Louisiana
Jamar is a decent corner as a #3 or #4 corner . CB is one of those spots where you can never have too many and quality at the low end is as important as the top end .
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG

Sorry but Taylor is a bum. If they want to keep him on as nickel or dime corner and for special teams, fine. But he has no business starting on the outside. I’m still upset we got rid of mccourty.

https://dawgpounddaily.com/2018/03/25/cleveland-browns-dorsey-list/Who is next on John Dorsey’s roster hit list? leveland Browns general manager John Dorsey has been working hard to rebuild the roster. So which veteran players may be the next to go? Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey has been a busy man the past few weeks as he reshapes the team’s roster around “his guys.” The Browns have added 11 players, either through trade or free agency, and more new faces will be on the way via the 2018 NFL Draft, where the club has the No. 1 and No. 4 overall selection, along with three selections in the second round. All those new players are going to need a roster spot, naturally, and Dorsey has been working on that as three starters from last season, quarterback DeShone Kizer, defensive tackle Danny Shelton and cornerback Jason McCourty have all exited town through trades; one, running back Isaiah Crowell, left in free agency; and another, left tackle Joe Thomas, retired. The roster turnover has led Browns fans to wonder who will be the next veteran to go, and cornerback Jamar Taylor appears to be at the top of the list. Taylor has spent the past two seasons with the Browns after being acquired in a draft-day trade with the Miami Dolphins in 2016. He had a nice first season in Cleveland, but slipped a bit in 2017. With Friday’s addition of free agent cornerback E.J. Gaines, the Browns have now added three players at the position as, in addition to Gaines, they previously signed T.J. Carrie and Terrance Mitchell. The Browns are also starting to be linked to Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward with the No. 4 selection in the draft, so Taylor may not be long for the roster. Defensive end Nate Orchard is also someone who should not comfortable, as he continues to be a low-graded (69.8 last season by Pro Football Focus) and low-performing (five sacks in 34 career games) player for the Browns. Dorsey added free agent defensive end Chris Smith to fill the backup pass rusher role, and may be looking to add more firepower in the draft with North Carolina State defensive end Bradley Chubb, for example, so Orchard’s time in Cleveland should be coming to a close after three unproductive years. Switching to offense, the trade for quarterback Tyrod Taylor quickly made Kizer expendable, and with the Browns almost a lock to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, Cody Kessler might soon be looking for a new team. Realistically, Kevin Hogan should be on the list with Kessler as neither player has done much, but Dorsey has a connection with Hogan from their days together with the Kansas City Chiefs, so he is likely safe. Kessler has shown some potential as a backup quarterback, his inability to push the ball down the field limits the offense when he is in the game. The Browns are only going to carry three quarterbacks this fall, so Taylor, the rookie and Hogan leave Kessler as the odd man out. The addition of 6-foot-7 and 270-pound tight end Darren Fells adds a new dimension to the running game, and the fact that Fells can catch the ball when it is thrown to him – 17 receptions last season on 23 targets — gives him a leg up on Randall Telfer as the team’s blocking tight end. With only five receptions in his two seasons with the Browns, Telfer’s presence on the field signals that a run play is more than likely the call. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley may not call any pass plays for Fells, especially with tight ends David Njoku and Seth DeValve, but he at least represents a player that defenses have to keep an eye on. Finally, the addition of Jarvis Landry gives the Browns the potential for a solid wide receiver group — as long as Josh Gordon and Corey Coleman can stay on the field for 16 games with Landry. That puts the group of Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins and Kasen Williams in a tough spot. There are not going to be many targets left behind the big three, and with a deep wide receiver class in the upcoming draft, all three are going to be in a fight for a roster spot. (Although Louis appearing in a workout video with Landry, Taylor and Njoku could be a good sign for Louis.)

I think Taylor was decent as a slot guy - not so much on the outside. We could do worse than him and BBC as the slot and 4th corner. I still think he may be an odd man out as I expect Wilson to earn a shot and they will be drafting a DB in the first 2 rounds.

Keep them all ... let them battle it out!!
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Didn't Dorsey cut him in KC? Supposedly he was counting on putting Hogan on the practice squad. But we claimed him, ruining that plan

Even so .... you don't cut a guy you want to be absolutely sure you can keep.
I have to wonder if our backup for this year might not be on another team.

There’s no reason to cut Taylor now. The only reason to get rid of him now would be in a trade.
Will he likely be cut and not make the 53 man roster? I’d say it’s very likely he gets cut at that point.
I’d be quite surprised if he’s on the team come the start of the season.

Dorsey has not hesitated to get rid of any existing Browns.
Taylor is still here n we havent heard of any rumors that we shopped him. I think we did here rumors of shopping WR Coleman after the Shelton trade.
CBs or a valued commodity even 5 deep. We will see who we draft. Then we will have a good competition.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
