Drew Stanton signs two-year deal with Browns

Quarterback Drew Stanton didn’t visit Cleveland, but a meeting with Browns brass while they were scouting draft prospects last week was apparently enough to lead to a deal.

Agent Mike McCartney announced on Twitter that his client has agreed to a two-year deal with the Browns.

Stanton spent the last five seasons with the Cardinals and started four games during the 2017 season. He was 79-of-159 for 894 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

Stanton’s arrival brings the Browns back up to four quarterbacks with Tyrod Taylor, Kevin Hogan and Cody Kessler already in the fold. With the Browns widely expected to take a quarterback with one of their two first-round picks, it seems likely that Hogan and/or Kessler will be looking for work somewhere else in the not too distant future.

Hogan and Kessler are bye byes? Of course, Hogan could possibly beat out Stanton?

Wow looks like that might be it for Hogan and Kessler ...

I think Hogan may stick through camp. Kessler is probably gone.

It looks like they really don't want their rookie QB to see the field this year, at least not due to injury, like when Detmer got hurt and Couch was thrown to the wolves.

I like this signing. In fact, he was one of the names I brought up a long time ago. I spoke of him and Matt Moore a few times, including bonefish's Bridge QB thread.

I do find it interesting that he was brought in w/Taylor here. I have to think about that for a bit.

I suspect Cody to be released in the coming days. No way he sticks around and Kevin is likely also on the hot seat.

I love this transaction. Draft our QB at 1, start Tyrod in 2018, have Stanton tutor the rookie. We finally have a plan.

Try to trade Kessler and Hogan...if you can't then put one of them on the PS and cut the other.

Stanton is apparently a great teammate. This is a win win scenario.

Question...Cards may be willing to trade for one of our guys as they now have nobody after Bradford. And, we know he will get hurt. Or, do they go all in and make a trade with the Giants for the #2?

I think the Stanton signing is the smartest thing the FO could do for Rosen/Darnold/Allen whichever QB they select #1.

Taylor is on the last year of his contract he will be the starter until the rookie is ready. Stanton is a true professional QB that will be an extra coach in the rookies ear during practice and while Taylor is playing. Also, he gives the team a viable backup if Taylor was to get an unfortunate injury so the rookie does not get thrown to the wolves until 100% ready.

Stanton has a 2 year deal and will serve as the rookies back up next year on the last year of his deal.

This is by far the best approach attempted by any Browns FO since they returned in sculpting a franchise QB for the team.

Good signing. This ensures the #1 pick time to be ready in case we have another McCownicopter Week 1.

I think they signed Stanton to ensure that whichever rookie they select does not see the field at all this year - unless both QBs (TT and Stanton) get hurt. I do not believe they will not be drafting QB #1.

Great. So we'll be getting rid of Kessler and Hogan.

Stanton's been in the league awhile. That says something about the guy.

I remember the season Palmer went down with an ACL, Stanton looked good, till he went down with an injury.

Then I think they started Logan Thomas that Virginia Tech QB who looked like a QB but wasn't much of a QB.

Anyway, happy with this signing. I don't think Hogan or Kessler had the arm to really make it in the NFL.

We have #1 overall and #4 overall and we haven't drafted a long snapper in a while.

I started a thread on this, but since most ignored it...............can you tell me how many guys drafted first overall sat for at least an entire year in the last ten years?

I think that is the most important part of the quote. They don't want to be forced to start a QB before he is ready.

vers i agreed with you when you posted the stats that showed that guys drafted #1 overall played pretty much week one, or sometime during their rookie season.

buuuuuuuuuuttttttttt, if we're gonna go there, then we have to discuss how we go about drafting in comparison to who we have as our bridge.

if we draft a QB #1, then the history clearly shows that Tyrod at some point (excluding injury) will get benched for the rookie.

i understand that how we WANT the season to play out compared to what actually happens tends to be two different things, but pro ready guys like Rosen aren't sitting for the whole year. if our FO/coaching staff is hellbent on letting the rookie sit, then the possibility has to be considered that MAYBE we dont take one #1.

just using the historical #'s you posted.

and yes 15, i was joking.....but what if i wasn't?

At the rate of the past few years, if we take a QB at #1 to go with this, we've almost got enough to get through Week 5.

lol. Keep in mind that if we didn't bench Kizer for that one week, he'd have started all 16 games last year.

So maybe we broke the pattern. And we can definitely give Kizer credit for doing that

Good signing ensures rookie isnt forced to play if Taylor goes down. Good guy for the qb room as well.
