6.5 million over two years, maxes out at 11.3?
Could be worse

I'd imagine any team wanting Kessler would wait till he's cut. Not necessarily... He's still on a rookie contract and to someone who thought highly of Kessler the year he was drafted would be better off taking a shot at him with a trade of a 7th rd pick, even if it's next year's pick. I think that's all it might take.

Could be worse I agree. We could be paying Sam Bradford $20 million. Either way, why so much for Drew Stanton?

Either way, why so much for Drew Stanton? He's valuable to us. Should be a good mentor for whoever our rookie is. Experienced backup to Tyrod Taylor, who's been in the league, seen a lot, won a couple games So I think he serves a few purposes. I'm not upset.

I'm not upset either, I'm just wondering who else was willing to pay Drew Stanton that much? And if no one was willing to pay him that much, then how come we are? I feel like we could have probably gotten him for significantly less.

I hope this signing will put a final end to the fable about us taking a QB at 1 and 4.

That's colt McCoy money there!!
Higher than what I'd expect.. but he's a qb... not the highest back up... not the lowest...

What’s the average price for a veteran back-up QB, isn’t it around 4-5 million/year? 6.5 for two years doesn’t sound bad.

Who were we bidding against the sign Stanton? He got $6.5 million. Over 2 years. 2 years, $6.5 million, of which $4.15 million is guaranteed. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/drew-stanton-3331/Some reports say that it can go as high as $11.3 million over 2 years. However, if it's being reported as 2yrs/6.5million then the extras are probably "not likely to be earned" incentives. Probably has some qualifiers like games played/achievements that a backup most likely won't earn.

Drew Stanton is a good quality backup and a good pickup for us. He knows the game and will be a good mentor to whomever we draft at QB.

Yeah, that's about the low end of the going rate ... a good backup is maybe 6-8 million
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Considering he only has two NFL TD's. I have nothing.

It's probably inconsequential.

I'm not sure what the minimum is for a veteran QB with as many years as he's played in the NFL is?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Foles has had some prior success in the NFL. He could probably start for several teams in the league. Stanton could not.

I don't know if I care actually about how much Drew Stanton is getting paid. I don't know how valuable a veteran backup actually is. The team has to weigh that versus the money saved (knowing we can roll unused cap into future years).

Considering he only has two NFL TD's. I have nothing. He's got to be maybe the 76th best quarterback in the NFL, of guys I'd want to see lead the Browns. So there's that.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Well if we are over paying him then so was Arizona because his last contract with them was for 2 yrs and $6.5 mill also, the only difference is we gave him slightly less guaranteed money ($4,150,000 compared to $4,500,000)

Getting Stanton is just like getting a future version of Cody Kessler. I hope Hogan beats him out.

11 years in the League he has thrown for a grand total of 4,059 yards. He has 20 TD's vs 24 Int's, His lifetime completion percentage is 52.4, his lifetime QB rating is 66.3. Throw in his 8 fumbles and we got ourselves another bad QB.

WHY are you guys getting so bent about a QB who's going to be #3 on the depth chart by game 3?
The TALENT we will have from our #1 pick will without doubt rise above Stanton QUICK.
You guys need to stop dreaming about Darnold or Rosen SITTING #3 all year.
It ain't gonna happen.
That QB will rise to #2 quickly and will get ALOT of reps.
Stanton is nothing more than an experienced Vet to help our #1 pick.
As soon as we signed Stanton, it became clear we are going QB at 1.
And #1 IS NOT FOR SALE. But you guys can keep talking about it.

Hue has stated there is no way the rookie will play this year... which is part of the reason the media is saying Allen at # 1... meaning Stanton is the backup.. His record is 11-6 overall and 3 -1 last year with Arizona. btw .. Dorsey has stated that #1 is for sale right up until the card is turned in... I know, all of this could be a smoke screen.. or not

Well I don't really see him going onto the field at all. I see him as a those who can't do...TEACH.
He has amassed a lot of Football knowledge in those 11 seasons. TT is going to concentrate on his game and not a tutor game for our rookie QB. I think that is going to be up to Stanton to be in that QB room and showing our Rookie QB the ropes while TT concentrates on winning.
jmho...we didn't bring him here to play.

As soon as we signed Stanton, it became clear we are going QB at 1. As soon as we sat Kizer for Hogan circa week 11 last year, and Hogan looked worse, it became clear we are going QB at 1. fixed it.

This signing is long over due.A professional back up QB,that knows and accepts that his position is clip board holder. If he sees the field we're in trouble.Well, worse that we already are. Our own version of Charlie Batch.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Stanton isn't a great QB but he gives us someone who has experience and can come in and play if Tyrod goes down and he won't take valuable practice snaps away from the rookie.
