Look, you make valid arguments and provide cases where I would feel better about it. Like your buddy sounds like knows how to handle a gun.
My problem with it all comes from all the people signing up to carry in schools and get the training. Chances are 90% of them aren't ever going to be trained well enough for this, even if trained by the PD. In my opinion, they all think they're John McClain and are going to save the freakin day. I've witnessed this attitude first hand in the work place. People talking about getting their CCW to protect my "Lib butt". And I just laugh and say, Ok Rambo.
That's fine. In MY opinion, teachers, custodians, school personnel that sign up to be armed and trained would NOT be Rambo types. Far from it, actually. And, don't forget, the school could allow or disallow someone.
There are 2 schools near me that have 'armed' EMPLOYEES. There has never been a mention as to whether it was 1 person per building, or 50 people per building.
Quote:
So while I'd be tempted to say your buddy is trained enough for it, I'm still not ok with it. I don't want a gun in my kids classroom period.
I can understand that. Keep in mind, I could and do see both sides to this issue.
But also keep in mind, IF there were a shooting and there were no armed personnel in the building, you have to call 911. Depending on the time of day, where cops are located at that time, etc - it could take 2-10 minutes for a cop to even show up.
I get the whole safety thing as well. NO ONE wants a misfire/accidental discharge. NO ONE. Here's a thought: An armed teacher/custodian/principal etc that is trained simply carries an empty pistol, with the magazine in a pocket.
The gun is totally unloaded. Dumb? No. Safe? Yes, ultimate safety, really.
If shots ring out in the school, that employee would need all of about 3 seconds to have the gun ready. Meanwhile, 911 hasn't even been dialed, let alone having a cop on scene. That would take several minutes. And then another 2-10 before the cops enter the building.
Mean time, teacher/custodian whoever, has tracked down where the shooting is coming from, gets a visual, and intercedes in SOME manner. If kids are running willy nilly around the shooter, you don't shoot. Period. You confront.
And as for you not wanting a gun in your kids classroom, I get it. But, would you ever know? How would you know?
Again, in the 2 schools around here that have armed employees, only the school board and the principals at each building know who, and how many. Not even other teachers know.
It may sound like I'm in favor of it. If it does, so be it. I still haven't decided though.
It's an idea for a solution that can be implemented in a reasonable amount of time, even if they wanted to go gun regulations it would take months to get through the wording and agreement.
I am glad to see we are now all on the same page with this march not being a children's march.
It is still up in the air as to what this march was truly about since it was hijacked from the children.
I have mostly heard anti Second Amendment crap and very little about protecting the children while in school.
You and all the others like you would miss the point of the protest. You care more about your guns than you do children. We get it.
No you miss the point. We want our guns so we can protect our families from the HORDES of criminals who will have guns, knives, and whatever else they can dream up to attack us with.
Chicago has the toughest gun laws on the books and it doesn't do anything to protect citizens. Police there sure don't stop the killings either.
This idea that citizens should disarm and sit around waiting for police to come save them is flat out stupid and dangerous.
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.
But it is pretty safe living in Mom and Pop's basement.
I wouldn't know to be honest because I paid my house off a long time ago when I was in my thirties.

So your idea of being more intelligent is to sit in my house while I am robbed, murdered, my daughters raped and killed, all while I wait for the police to show up 30 minutes late IF I am wealthy enough to own a home security system. Yeah that kind of superiority I don't need. Please feel free to enjoy that for yourself.
I have had to defend my family from bad people breaking into my home. The better guns I have the better!
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

My idea of being more intelligent is being measurably more intelligent. AND I will freely admit I'm not the smartest guy in the world by a long shot but I've NEVER been accused of being stupid or the dumbest guy in the room.
As for this new right-wing attack on intelligence like it's some sort of scarlet letter, I say BS. Calling me elitist for being a little smarter or more quick of wit is some kind of fascist fictional boogeyman created up in the troglodyte cave. I will never apologize for being intelligent, constantly striving to improve my personal knowledge, having world views that have evolved beyond basic instincts, or expressing my opinions very strongly when insulted, confronted, and or attacked.
Congratulations on keeping your family safe, I fully respect that. How about you try for just a moment to respect my views on wanting to keep other families including yours and especially the children not just safe but alive.

I understand your intentions. You just don't understand the consequences. The only thing this constant whittling away of our rights does is turn us all into victims. If you want the kids safe design schools better and have real security. No gun regulation is going to stop a murderer from getting a gun illegally and showing up at a school. That is a plain simple fact. What has stopped them events from being worse was a guard or citizen using a gun to put the bad guy down.
The only regulation I support is a mental fitness evaluation and for it to be repeated every time you renew your driver license.
The real issue that people are ignoring is teaching these kids to treat people with respect and to not bully others. Bullying is the number one reason that starts mass death or suicide events. Work on fixing that before stripping Americans of their rights.

You make a valid argument and your ideas aren't bad. I still wouldn't like it, and I'm against it. But if it had to happen and I was outvoted, I'd be open minded with your ideas for making it as safe as possible.
We do disagree on the Rambo types though. I've personally sat at my cubicle at work and heard three of my surrounding neighbors talking about getting their CCW and how they would just LOVE it if someone pulled a gun near them!
Also, reading any news story comments about burglaries in the area, and the people say stuff like "Let that guy break into my house and he's DEAD." or "If he ever comes near my car I'll have a bullet waiting for him."
It's these types I worry about. And there's plenty of them. It's not that they wouldn't be justified in protecting their home, it's how amped they are for it to happen. Like they're looking for a reason to shoot someone. They're probably drooling over the whole Zombie Apocalypse scenario too.
I even tried to make a point to one of them once that the break ins were happening when no one was home, and it was a couple of 12 year old kids. They weren't armed, and were just looking for a few bucks. So illegal, wrong, and incredibly stupid. But a home invasion meant to kill or harm, NO. And these posters just kept talking about how they would have blown those kids heads off.
I don't understand these people.

ADT Security system costs about $55 per month. That's $660 a year for you math geniuses. That's just a little more than the cost of a gun, let alone an arsenal which you probably have.

Ah ok I get it, it's a parenting issue. Cool, how about we make some sort of solution for those people out there who get themselves pregnant and don't really want to be parents. What's that called again??? Oh yeah, abortion!
But you don't like that either. You'd rather have Welfare take care of the families... Nope. So you'd rather see these unwanted children be born, abandoned, and raised by the system, to probably end up as criminals or in prison, or starve from poverty. But hey, they had a fair shot at life right!

9 votes for every liberal. You do the math. Elections 2018 and 2020, the hamma is coming down.
Yes, us Americans hate the tax cut we got, employers hiring on every corner, freedoms being returned to the people. We want to go back to paying more taxes than we take home, no companies hiring, jobs moving to Mexico, and allowing our little girls to go to the bathroom with dirty old men. Come on hamma we cannot wait!!!

My tax is going up. No raises for 3 years. People are getting laid off all around me. And yeah Carrier is still sending jobs to Mexico that Trump gave them huge tax cuts not to do. And only a bad parent would let little girls or boys out of their sight or go alone into a public restroom.

Quite a jump to go from her saying they excluded someone to being the same as bullying someone. I didn't play football in HS so the football kids never invited me anywhere. I wasn't being bullied though..
I love shotguns to be sure but I prefer an accurate weapon over a spray weapon when my family is in the same building as live fire.
My single biggest knock against the AR-15 for personal defense use is the 5.56mm NATO round. It is a useful round for varmints/coyotes though. For people, it is designed to maim, not kill. This is per Eugene Stoner's (inventor of armalite rifle) testimony on why the Army choose such a "small round" for the weapon. In the event of a home invasion you'd want more than just maiming... you want to make sure the intruder isn't capable of moving.
All that said, I have a 3 year old at home and twins on the way. The safest thing I can do to protect my family right now is to get rid of my guns. Since I choose to keep them, I'm opting with the second safest: keep the guns unloaded, locked, and ammo well away, also locked. I do not feel personally safe to have a loaded gun in my home and know the home invasion statistics are so unlikely compared to my children getting access to the gun that I'll take my chances with a baseball bat. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/10/14/ap-usa-today-gun-accidents-children/91906700/
And you know what? You need to do what you feel you need to do. Kudo's to you for doing so. Guns locked up, ammo in a different locked up situation is fantastic.
I'm on the other 'side', if there's a 'side' to it. I don't have youngsters at home. Just me, my wife, and my 17 year old daughter. And trust me, my daughter and I have shot together, at home, and at ranges. She's also seen what a slug from a 12 gauge can do to a 150 lb deer.

Oh yea, I think there's a huge difference between 3 and 17 for guns. I also think it's important that youngsters see what damage a gun can do.
Totally non-scientific on my part, but it's been near 100% for me: The folks who have guns but don't hunt or kill varmints tend to treat guns a bit differently than those who hunt. I mean those who just target shoot act all Arnold tough guy about it, like it's an extension of their personality. For hunters, I think seeing the damage done "tempers" the excitement a bit and replaces it with somber respect.
