Chicago has very lax gun laws these days, specifically since 2010. At one time chicago had very strict handgun laws (permits, registration, etc.) but no longer. Better cities to use for examples of gun regulation is New York and Los Angeles, who require permits for handguns (Chicago does not). Chicago enacted a handgun ban in the late 80s and it was overturned in 2010.





There's a lot of work to be done on making women feel more protected from predators. It's a hard crime to because our justice system doesn't really work that well in rape cases. I don't know of a way to fix that without presumption of guilt (which we shouldn't have), just stating that most rape cases the women gets turned into the villain, whether deserving of it or not. So the crimes go unreported to avoid the humiliation.

I'm of the opinion that the main reason the speed limit is followed so loosely is because in the US it's a revenue driver. If it was purely to save lives then we'd have stricter penalties for going well over the speed limit. Germany punishes speeders for going only 2mph over the limit. You still have people who don't want to pay the fine, so they obey the rules. Exhibit A: You and me



The death penalty for rape is not proportional response to the crime. That's akin to chopping off someones hand for theft. As for murder, I don't see how the death penalty vs life without parole is extremely different when we're asking what is an effective deterrent. States that have the death penalty and states that don't have it don't show appreciable differences in murder rates source

I agree with Gage on the drunk driving thing. Sorry, just "because" something didn't happen, doesn't mean that the person should not get punished. The point is to make it not happen, if you only get punished if someone gets hurt, that's well......pretty dumb to say the least.

Tell my little cousin how has had to endure 8 skull and brain surgeries, 4 on his legs, and 5 on his arm that its the drunk drivers life that gets ruined because of these laws........pathetic.

I'm making this its own post as I want to make it crystal clear how expensive it is to say "guard them properly."



A school tends to cost on the order of hundreds of dollars a square foot. So to build a new school will cost that community tens of millions, perhaps over 100 million dollars. Even if we could account for that, guard them properly is showing to be a problem. The parkland shooting happened with a resource officer who did not go into the building. If our plan is to guard it like a prison, that is 1 guard per 9 students. Ohio has 1,729,916 students so we would need 192,213 guards at a salary of $43.5k each. That means our operating costs for armed security is 8.3 Billion a year (With a B), on top of the (lets estimate) $75million for the new school construction. Amortized over a 30 year loan, that's 2.5 million USD a year. Ohio has 3,538 schools so that is 8.4 Billion a year (With a B) to create the new schools. source source 2

So that means to rebuild all schools to be like prisons in safety, and add guard security would cost 17,206,265,500 Dollars a year. It is safe to say this number would only go up, because even though schools would be paid off after 30 years, the functional age is closer to 16 source . Additionally, you'd have to account for COLA for the guards as they won't like to be paid 43.5k 10 years from now.

So to accomplish your suggestion, we would need to fund an additional 17.2 BILLION (With a B) per year into the Ohio public education system to make our kids safe from gun violence. The state of ohio collects $49 Billion in taxes, meaning this increases the state budget by 26%. The entire ohio state budget right now is 17% dedicated to schools. So we would be more than doubling our current school expenditures.

I guess the bottom line is that if you think the answer to the gun problem is that schools are soft targets, our taxes will have to go up significantly. So significantly that it would be very painful for all but the wealthiest Ohioans (and other states if enacted). It's easy to see that a plan such as this would not gain traction in the state legislature.

Why would anyone put a "17 year old high school student venting through trauma" on TV. If he is so traumatized wouldn't be better to let him overcome the trauma before asking him to lead a "Revolution"?

He didn't seem to traumatized to demand the reporter to denounce her station and they bullied the "kids" after she apologized, where did he get that list of advertisers and how did he get them so fast?

As for the Hogg kid and the rest of the kids taking credit for organizing the 2800 school walk-out, the March, and everything else.... either he is seeking the attention or he is getting very bad advice. You don't organize all of that, make yourself the face of a "revolution", claim you will unseat all of those republicans, take down the NRA, fundamentally change the constitution, and just generally "change the world" and then not expect to get heat and opposition for it... You don't get to do and say all of that and then hide behind, "they're just kids".... If they want to play on the big stage, then they need to put on their big boy/girl pants and play..

The fact is, kids today know more about how to gather information from the internet far easier than most of us do. It makes it easy to fool a lot of people into believe that it's complicated. It's not if you know how to do it.
