All these FA CBs will allow Gregg to play the FS within the 44114 zip code this year. That is my feeling. I keep remembering something Williams preached last year....something about not getting beat over the top, quickly. That is why our corners played off and our safety was 30 yards deep. He wasn't going to get beat over the top. With the guys we have added, and will probably draft a corner or two in the draft, we should be able to press cover more and bring Peppers up near the LOS where he can have a bigger impact. Adding Chubb would also be a move that would have a positive impact on corner play. I think Gregg played the defense he had to play last year...not the defense he wanted to play. The year prior with the Rams Gregg played ~30% man, ~24% Cover-2 zone. That's about 54% of plays where the CBs can press. I don't know what the numbers were this year but from watching the games it seemed like a hell of lot of soft and off coverages mostly zone with no press. I don't know these new CBs well but my guess would be that they're better at man and press then the guys they're replacing. Bringing in Randall aids a natural FS in college with experience being able to match-up with WRs in the NFL. That moves Pep out of the fulltime FS spots and into the SS position where I think he'll be more productive. Give Peppers a chance to solve the problem covering TEs.

I just want to say, I want to see the Browns win more than 6 games in a season before I die.
I think if the Browns today, could just keep their front 7, without cutting players or shipping Danny Shelton off to New England, that nobody coming in is going to make an immediate impact and for that reason, this year, the Browns should stay away from selecting anybody in the front 7 of the defense, with the Browns first 5 picks, and especially nobody in the top 5 of the first round, again.
They basically have gone that way for 3 years running. Defensive front 7 with their impact draft selections.
The Browns need to go offense offense offense exclusively for their impact first, and 2nd round picks, with maybe a little defensive secondary mixed in.
The Front 7? Aside from the plethora (3 amigos) of young talent they have on the roster, so that no one is going to come in and make an impact; there is a better chance to find good players in this position group in the later rounds.
You have to draft your offensive weapons early.
The Browns never/rarely do! And the Browns, haven't won squat since 1994!
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

No doubt. I am not as down on Sashi and crew as some, but trading Haden at the midnight hour was a big miss. That changed a lot to the worse. Respectfully, I agree RELEASING Haden was a big mistake. I have now seen several references to Sashi trading Haden. There was no trade. He was released, and the Steelers signed him like 5 minutes later.

I get that they thought that they had a good top 3 CBs in McCourty, Taylor, and Boddy-Calhoun, but man, Sashi went overboard with discarding veteran players. Even if he felt that Haden wasn't one of his best 3 CB, (questionable, at best) and even if he felt that Haden was on the decline, (obviously clear that he was) Haden was still at least the 4th best CB on the team, and he actually might have been the best "fit" for Wiliams's defense.

As long as we're whining, would it be too much to ask for people to reply to the poster they are replying to, instead of being lazy and using "Quick reply"? Because as far as I have seen, Pdawg said nothing about Sashi.

Taylor can cover a little.
He may be the worst tackler I have seen outside of some punters.
He shies away from contact. Never in a tackling position.
I wonder how he has escaped the rath of Williams.

I wonder how he has escaped the rath of Williams. I see it almost exactly opposite. I think Taylor is solid tackler for a CB. I think he's only good at coverage in Gregg scheme because he really wasn't asked to cover...he was asked to give ground allow the short catch and make tackles that limited YAC.

I think Taylor was better in coverage under Horton than he was last year w/Williams. I have absolutely no idea if there's any correlation there.
I agree w/bone that Taylor is a poor tackler.
I also think Vambo is trying to start yet another fight. Imagine...

I won't complain if he is gone, but I think he might be okay as a dime corner who plays in the slot.

I liked Taylor in the slot, but I think BBC might actually be better in the slot. I don't think GW is going to have our Corners play in that same marshmallow coverage this year. That's going to make our LB's look better in coverage again as well.

At first I thought it was just a missed tackle.
So then I started to isolate on him and just watch what he does over a number of plays.
You can tell when a guy does not want to stick his face in there.
So many plays he goes through the motions. He avoids contact. I have seen it to many times.
Just like you see a aggressive tackler like Haden was. Taylor is not. He does not like tackling and tries to let others do it then just piles on here and there.
Never seen him once really lay the wood on someone.

We averaged what? 14.6 points per game? Yep, sounds like the D is the problem. Fix the secondary and you're looking pretty good there.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I see it the same way you do. This front seven would look a lot better if the secondary could cover. I understand their issue. I mean we've sucked in the secondary so badly they think the band aids we signed were the answer to their prayers and the problems were addressed. But they weren't.
But I do think he will load up on pass rushers and neglect impact players in the secondary. We both know how that's going to play out.

The moves we made have improved the secondary and given it depth but we could still use another S and CB. That would solidify it IMO.

But our FA certainly has clarified need versus depth for the draft. I am pleased overall with what Dorsey has done so far, and we are much better I hope than what we had last season. Defense is huge; it will carry you on a day when your O breaks down or injuries tear up your game plan. Pretty solid, especially getting rid of some of the losing squad.
Best of luck!
