Let's look at who the man actually is. Let's look at his character and his history up until the point that he fell under some kind of character assassination by the Trump White House.

Military service....

While most of his fellow Princeton graduates were trying to figure out how to avoid the draft, Mueller was motivated to join in 1968 by the death of his friend and lacrosse teammate David Hackett, a Marine Corps first lieutenant killed by small arms fire in Vietnam.

“I have been very lucky. I always felt I should spend some time paying it back,” he told UVA Lawyer in 2002. “There were a number of us who felt we should follow [Hackett’s] example and at least go into the service. And it flows from there.”

Hackett’s example of sacrifice and duty has shaped Mueller’s view of leadership since. “One would have thought that the life of a Marine, and David’s death in Vietnam, would argue strongly against following in his footsteps. But many of us saw in him the person we wanted to be,” Mueller told the Princeton Alumni Weekly in February 2012. “And a number of his friends, teammates, and associates joined the Marine Corps because of him, as did I… He taught us the true meaning of leadership. One teammate can change your life. And David Hackett changed mine.”

Mueller plowed through officer candidate school at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Army Ranger School, and Army jump school before he was shipped out to Vietnam, according to Time. Commander of a rifle platoon of the 3rd Marine Division, he was a recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, according to his FBI bio.

His citation for the Bronze Star with Valor, his first decoration earned just weeks after arriving in Vietnam in December 1968 after his platoon came under heavy fire in the Quang Tri Province, lauded Mueller’s “courage, aggressive initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty.”

“Second Lieutenant Mueller fearlessly moved from one position to another,” the citation reads, according to Graff. “With complete disregard for his own safety, he then skillfully supervised the evacuation of casualties from the hazardous area and, on one occasion, personally led a fire team across the fire-swept area terrain to recover a mortally wounded Marine who had fallen in a position forward on the friendly lines.

That same devotion to duty would serve Mueller just four months later in April 1969, when, as a second lieutenant, he led his platoon to rescue American troops pinned down under heavy fire from the Vietcong. Despite taking an AK-47 round through the thigh, Mueller held his position until the troops had safely retreated. The firefight earned him a Navy Commendation Medal and his Purple Heart; a month later, he was back on patrol in the jungles of Vietnam (“I thought I’d at least get to go to a hospital ship,” he reportedly quipped of his injuries.)

According to Graff, Vietnam was “intensely formative” for Mueller, “forging his leadership skills literally under fire.” And Mueller would have spent his life in the Marine Corps had his wife Ann not put her foot down during a brief R&R stop in Hawaii after his first year in Vietnam. “Under the tropical sun, he told her that he wanted to stay in the Marines as a career,” Graff writes. “She explained that that wasn’t an option, and he eventually relented.”

What did both parties think of the character and abilities of Robert Mueller? What did both parties believe his ability to put politics aside and stand by the rule of law?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate voted unanimously Thursday to confirm Robert Mueller as FBI director.

The Senate vote was 98-0 to approve Mueller for a 10-year term, the same day the Senate Judiciary Committee recommended his confirmation.

The 56-year-old veteran prosecutor was President Bush's pick to lead the bureau. He told the Judiciary Committee during a two-day confirmation hearing that his top priority would be to "restore the public's confidence in the FBI, to re-earn the faith and trust of the American people."

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, the Judiciary Committee's chairman, said Mueller should be prepared to "clean house if necessary."

Leahy called the FBI the "crown jewel" of law enforcement agencies. But both Democrats and Republicans on the panel criticized the FBI for recent high-profile mistakes, ranging from missing guns and computers to a spy for Russia within its ranks.

"Some of that jewel has lost some of its luster," Leahy said. "And we want to restore it."

Mueller said the agency is "far from perfect" but noted that recent controversies did not "tell the whole story" about the FBI. He cited such successes as its investigations of bombings at the World Trade Center and two U.S. embassies in Africa.

Attorney General John Ashcroft praised Mueller's confirmation in a written statement Thursday night.

"Robert Mueller will serve with fidelity, bravery and integrity," Ashcroft said. "His dedication to public service and background in criminal law will bring an invaluable perspective to the Department of Justice. The FBI will benefit from his years of leadership."

The agency has been buffeted by criticism for its handling of several cases. Among them:

-- The probe of the Atlanta Olympic park bombing in 1996 in which security guard Richard Jewell was wrongly identified as a suspect. The man eventually charged in the blast, Eric Robert Rudolph, fled into the North Carolina woods and has not been found.

-- Its investigation into espionage allegations at the Los Alamos National Laboratory that led to the controversial arrest of Chinese-American nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee, who was charged with 59 felony counts of mishandling classified data and was jailed for nine months. He eventually pleaded guilty to a single count, and the FBI was criticized for its treatment of the Taiwan-born naturalized citizen.

-- The arrest of FBI agent Robert Hanssen, who recently pleaded guilty to 15 counts of espionage.

-- The fact that hundreds of FBI documents in the Oklahoma City bombing investigation were not disclosed to defense attorneys in the case until days before the scheduled execution of Timothy McVeigh. That revelation prompted a delay in McVeigh's execution.

Even as lawmakers criticized the agency, they warmly welcomed Mueller.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the ranking Republican on the committee, called Mueller "an exceptionally perfect fit for the job."

House Votes to Extend FBI Director's Term

The House approved a bill Monday that would allow President Obama to re-nominate current FBI Director Robert Mueller for two additional years.

Mueller, 66, faced mandatory retirement in September if the House didn't pass the bill, which was approved by a voice vote. The Senate last week unanimously approved the same bill.

That's right. BOTH parties were unanimous in voting for Mueller to be the FBI director. Members of both parties spoke out about his service and character in regards to keeping to the rule of law over politics. A decorated war veteran who not only didn't avoid the draft, but volunteered to serve his country during a time of war.

Yet now, with the investigation of Trump, all of that has suddenly changed for some. They are now attacking a man who is above reproach on the word of one man and his legal team. They are now attacking the character of a man who has spent his entire life proving that there is nothing about his character to attack.

This is what our nation is becoming, or should I say has become. Take a long look at both the life of Mueller and Trump. Then honestly sit back and ask yourself who it is you should be questioning.

Why he's the guy that Trump fired tomorrow.

And who has more actual character and morals in his little finger than Trump has in his entire body.

When he was chosen to be the special counsel, he was widely praised by Republicans. That only changed when Trump started disparaging him.

This has become par for the course lately. Threads used to make it a page or two before they evolved (or devolved in some cases).. now it's lucky if you get 3 or 4 posts in before somebody has totally derailed it.

I don't think anybody is perfect 40. There are a lot of positives about the guy though and neither party had EVER questioned his character...... until now.

If he was Trumps buddy and defending him, he'd be a lot closer to perfect.

What Trump has done branding the name (which I admit, he's somewhat competent at), is trying to cover his ass for all of the horrific financial decisions he's made to put him deeply in debt.

He kept trying to leverage the Trump name as an asset on every loan he defaulted on, until he was left letting properties going into lien and trying to re-coup pennies on the dollar with branding.
