Anabolic steroids are synthetic male hormones which enhance and repair the body tissue-building process. They are used medically to treat anemia (low red blood cell count); to control breast cancer in women; to improve weight loss due to severe illness, and to treat osteoporosis (bone loss). Use of this for non-medical reasons poses serious, life threatening consequences.
There have been numerous reports of mental illness occurring in association with anabolic steroid use. A 17-year-old male with no previous psychiatric history developed a schizophrenia- like illness characterised by paranoid ideas and hallucinations 6 months after commencing regular use of an unknoWn dose of methandienone (methandrostenolone) obtained on the blackmarket. The illness subsidedafter discontinuation of the drug (Annitto and Layman, 1980
could be the why behind the illness.

He's guilty. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2959887BEREA, Ohio -- Browns offensive tackle Ryan Tucker was suspended Friday for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL's steroid policy. Tucker, one of Cleveland's leaders on the field and in the locker room, missed part of last season with what the team called a "mental disorder." He says he is now healthy and is eligible to return to the roster Oct. 1, one day after the Browns host the Baltimore Ravens. "I didn't intend to compromise the integrity of the NFL, my team," Tucker said following Friday's morning practice. "I want to apologize to the fans, my family. It's been a long road. I was pretty down and out last year, and in my attempt to come back I took a banned substance. I'm going to fulfill this punishment and get it behind me." Tucker will be allowed to stay with the Browns during training camp and preseason. However, coach Romeo Crennel said the 32-year-old player will not be permitted to participate in team activities once the suspension without pay starts Sept. 1. Tucker has made 62 starts with the Browns since joining them as a free agent in 2002. He talked about "getting the respect and trust back of my teammates" earlier this week, but he wouldn't elaborate. Tucker was placed on the reserve-non-football-illness list for the final eight games last season. At the time, the Browns said Tucker's disorder was one "commonly experienced by the general population as well as by professional athletes." Tucker has never given any details about his illness. "I didn't know if playing again was a possibility," he said. "The bottom line is I'm healthy now, my family's healthy and happy, people are behind me here and my family's behind me."

It's an unfortunate situation, but reading this article, I'm glad he's sacking up and taking his punishment. And he's admitting what he did too. Refreshing change of pace...
Good luck, Tuck

I am really starting not to like Tucker..
I remember a lot of people on this board talk about Merriman and steroids, now a Browns player has done it but there isn't such a big uproar...go figure...seems to be a bunch of hypocrites..
Personally I wish we would cut him...He is a cheater...
Look I mean I don't take money off the top where I work. I do my job and do it by the book. In my opinion anybody who takes steroids is a cheater...
Go Browns!!

At least he isn't all "deny deny deny".
I still support Tuck and won't throw him under a bus because I've done crap I'm not proud of. I also agree that at least we can shoot Shaff over to RT and start solidifying things.

IMO, Tucker was an asset, but after last years "mental situation" and him admitting to breaking the rules, he is no more. I like him, but I can't see how anyone can depend on him.
Keep Shaffer at RT nad let Tucker be a back-up when he returns.

I have it on solid authority this was not the cause of his problems, but more so he was playing catchup.

Well he has had knee problems plus the mental problems as well.. He thought he could speed up the recovery process of his body and didn't think it would catch up to him..
Just because he's a Brown doesn't make it right..he made a mistake now he's got to take the punishment...
Tyler_Derden With this development, I think that there is a good possiblity that last years "mental disorder" had a lot to do with Steroids---seeing as how steroids are notorious for side effects like extreme mood changes and depression. I think you don't need to try to assume about his disorder..Roids had nothing to do with it.. I know two people personally who suffer from the same disorder and roids HAS NOTHING to do with it.

He's an F-in' idiot. Not for taking them, but, for getting caught. There are so,so many ways to mask, hide or just getting on the proper rotation so that you should never get caught. It's a rookie mistake pulled by a vet.

I know...what I was saying is that his issues last season were not related to the steroids, as far as I know.
I like that he's going to at least take it like a man.

The guy made a mistake,....owned up to it,.....explained why it happened,....and apologozed fot it.
Tucker's been a stand up guy for the Browns, came in here and did what was asked of him,did it well and didn't complain.
You're O.K. in my book Ryan,....I'm looking forward to your return.

Makes some sense to me. Without the boost, Tucker may have figured even with a 4 game suspension this was the quickest way back. Twenty-five percent of his salary may have been deemed a reasonable cost.

I do not like the fact that he took a performance enhancer. I am disappointed in him for doing it. I also realize he has been a pro for a long time without ever having a problem. He admitted to it and didn't make excuses. He was coming from a very bad place and I can see how he had a lapse of judgement. It doesn't excuse it but then again he isn't asking anyone to.

LOL...Yes I did didnt I....I guess people with little time to respond to this board, should reread what they quickly type...LOL...
I'm not saying what he did was right, but we have all made stupied dicissions over our life time, we look back on and say what the heck was I thinking, hopefully this was just one of Tucks time, and shouldnt be compared along side Vick or Pacman, and with some of the responces, I've never done steroids, was offered back in high school in the last 70's when they first started coming to the surface, but my up brining told me if ya dont work for it, it must not be right,

Figures. We have our best OL in a looooong time, and still can't keep it intact. When will it end? Someone is always hurt or missing games one way or another.

I am just having a hard time thinking that this is just an isolated incident. I mean, the guy has been in the league for how long and now, on a whim, he decides to start using steroids---I don't buy it.
I think that he just messed up in his cycle and got caught.
But then again, I tend to think that a lot of professional athletes use steroids. There are many ways to get away with it, and the size and speed of a lot of these guys is a just a little bit suspect to me.

I guess we all know why Shaffer didn't get shopped for a trade now. Depth is a very good thing. Tucker will be back for the better part of the season and we'll need him somewhere along the line before it's over. Maybe it was the only way he'd be ready for the season so he rolled the dice? Who knows? We have enough players to fill the line and it's still early in camp.

He said he's a IDIOT not for taking them but for getting caught..
And you agree with that?
That kind of attitude is what MANY people have when they do something they shouldn't..'it's not wrong if I don't get caught"... Getting by taking it once means you'll do it again and again..thats stupid..

You know, i have a mental disorder that has been a real disability at times. They can totally ground you and it's a big struggle. I don't know what he suffers from, but it was harmful enough to cause him to miss a lot of work. I can't say that when i've missed a good part of my life, a life that i've worked very hard to create, that I wouldn't want to take something to "catch up." It was a mistake, but still
it's not like he's always used steroids to have a competitive edge. He's been in this league a long time without any problem. He just wanted to get back to where he was before, and be able to get back to work quickly and be with his team. He's being a man about it.
Until you stand in a guys shoes, we probably shouldn't judge. If it happens again, I think we could say he's no good. But this is one mistake in a long career. He is a team leader and a hard worker. I'm giving him a pass on this one. This one only.

If I can chime in here from experience.....I understand what Tucker did. i do not condone it, but I understand it. I've been there. When I tore my ACL (which was the kiss of death in the late 80s early 90s), I was told I'd never step on the field again. My football career was over....something I had done from 5th grade on. I saw my career as over, just as Tucker had to be looking at his. They were right there staring him in the face and it was something I think he did out of sheer desperation to continue his career. It is wrong, but as I said, I can relate to where he was.
I do not condone what he's done, but I respect him for taking responsibility for his mistake and not denying the situation. Now, as long as he continues with that type of class, he'll lose no respect for one mistake in such a desperate situation.

Sorry, I'm just not too impressed with Shaffer. At least he'll go back to blocking the weaker of the two Defensive Ends instead of the blind side Defensive End. Remember in the ATL he played Left Tackle which was Vick's non-blind side. So maybe he will be okay. I hope McKinney is ready to play Guard at a very high level!

If Tucker hadn't taken the juice, maybe he wouldn't have even been ready for camp? We'd be without him anyway. I don't condone breaking the rules but I understand his motivation. We'll just have to move on without him.

You're wrong. Read my post referencing the substance abuse program. (performance enhancing drugs)
