Embattled Johnson not blaming Bears

Chronicle News Services

Defensive tackle Tank Johnson doesn't blame the Chicago Bears for cutting him following his latest run-in with the law.

"They had supported me through thick and thin," Johnson told ESPN on Wednesday. "The Bears went to bat for me publicly and more so privately to help me get through this stuff. I put them in a very hard situation."

The Bears waived Johnson three days after he was pulled over by police in Arizona.

Johnson was released without charges after being taken to the Gilbert, Ariz., police station, and test results in early July showed his blood alcohol level was .072 — under the presumptive limit for DUI in Arizona of .08 percent.

Johnson said it was fair for the Bears to release him before the results came back and that he made "a bad decision."

" ... You're around your family. 'OK, I'm going home.' Everyone's asking, 'Are you OK to drive?'" Johnson told ESPN. " 'I'm fine.' Sometimes, foolish pride gets in the way of making the right decision."

i posted this article b/c i was thinking... the guy is young, only 26 maybe?... he's pretty big... pretty talented... anddddd..... the Browns do need a few BIGGER younger bodies to help with this 3-4 defense...

Was suspended for the first 8 games of the season.....

Then goes out and gets a DUI.....

The man is incapable of making sound decisions and cannot be counted on to be available on the roster on Sundays. What good is he???

I HOPE THAT NO TEAM SIGNS HIS STUPID ASS

I don't know about giving him a shot...But I don't think he is all the trouble that he has been made out to be. Maybe he is...but I doubt it.....at least he does say the right things...he owns up to his missteps and takes his punishment...

Very confusing situation....

Yeah......at a minicamp in mid-June he told the media he would become the man of the year in Chitown...or something like that.

A month later he gets a DUI...

It's simple to take punishment when they slap handcuffs on you in court and take you to jail.

Goodell is sending a message to these punk asses, the teams need to back him up by not signing them.

You act like he was out Partying at every stip club around and had a BAC of 1.2

You act as if he purposely went out to get drunk off his butt and then flaunt it in front of every policeman around...

Like I mentioned before I really don't know if we should give the guy a shot...but don't try to make him out to be the worst criminal punk in the world....Heck YOU DO NOT KNOW THE MAN....you know of 2 instances in his life where he was doing the wrong thing at the wrong time in the wrong place. Two things is hardly a trend. My God...what skeletons would everyone else find if we judged you or me with the same Microscope....

Pete...this isn't just about Tank Johnson. It's about PacMan, Chris Henry, Antonio Bryant, Koren Robinson, Dominique Byrd, AJ Nicholson, etc etc etc.

When a person is in the position that these guys are in, and they screw up.......AND ARE GIVEN CHANCES TO STRAIGHTEN UP YET THEY DON'T......then that indicates a problem.

This country has a problem with a great deal of its youth. It's rampant in the NBA and the NFL thank God is finally having the balls to step up and say NO MORE.

The only way I am acting is as if this guy has the talent and the chance to play a game for lots of coin but wants to be a thug. Let him go be a thug.....

If he didn't want to be a thug, he would have flown straight since he was already on the radar.

He obviously doesn't care.

Make that three.....

Had to go look it up, but the jail time for the gun violation was because he WAS ALREADY ON PROBATION.

It was subsequently dropped.

He could have still been charged with it even though he was just under the limit, but they didn't do it. Probaby because of money issues.....if it was a common Joe without the cash to fight it, they would have prosecuted. (IMO)

Umm, you might want to re-read that. I'd really like to see where you found that he got a DUI. He turned out to be below the legal limit and thus was not charged with a DUI. So he essentially got released for speeding.

His "Weapons Charge" according to the Chicago Sun Times was just keeping unregistered guns in his home. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4155/is_20061224/ai_n17074962
He wasn't out shooting up the place.

He did not get a DUI, he was pulled over for driving 40 mph in a 25. When tested for blood alcohal they found he was under the legal limit.

Considering some of the crimes committed by players that are still playing and even starting, these are very mild offenses. In fact, how many of us over our lifetime have had a speeding ticket? And or have drove after drinking, not drunk just drove after drinking. Is this a future trend for Tank, maybe, but if he comes cheap.......

The guy is young and has talent, the bears acted quickly after the Arizona thing. Once his blood alcohol level came back under the limit, i wonder if the bears had second thoughts.

His 8 game suspension makes him a rental player for this year. I think he will sign with a playoff contender near the end of his suspension. IF he stays in shape, he might be just enough to really strengthen a teams rotation for a playoff run. Dallas and Jerry Jones comes to mind first- they seem to give players second and third chances.

Tank strikes me as the kind of guy who might "get the message" after being cut. With his talent, I'd love to be the team holding his contract when/if he gets with the program.

From Wikipedia:

In November 2005, Johnson was arrested at the Excalibur nightclub in Chicago's Cook County for possession of a handgun in his sport utility vehicle. Johnson pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge and was sentenced to 18 months probation and 40 hours of community service.[4] On February 12, 2006, Johnson, while still on probation, was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest after allegedly verbally threatening a police officer. Johnson was leaving Level Nightclub on Chicago's Rush Street when the police officer was ticketing a limousine driver whom Johnson had hired. As Johnson allegedly put up a struggle, he was maced and subdued with the help of other police officers. The charges were eventually dropped.[5]

Johnson's mugshot from his arrest. On December 14, 2006, Lake County police officers searched Johnson's home in Gurnee, Illinois, and allegedly discovered that he possessed six firearms, including two assault rifles. According to police reports, some of the guns were loaded and there were children in the house. [6] Although Johnson was at football practice during the search, his bodyguard William Posey was arrested from his house for alleged possession of marijuana. Johnson was charged with violation to probation and possessing unlicensed weapons. Bears coach Lovie Smith deactivated Johnson for the following game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers based on this incident.[7]

On December 16, 2006, Johnson's best friend and bodyguard William Posey was killed in a shooting at Ice Bar in Chicago's River North neighborhood. Posey was shot after he was allegedly involved in a fight around midnight. Posey was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30am. Posey's assailant was not apprehended by the police.[8] On December 28, Chicago Police apprehended Michael Selvie, Posey's alleged assailant. Selvie, a "reputed gang member" has been implicated in over 30 other crimes. However, Selvie's defense attorney claims that Selvie does not posses a firearm or any gang affiliations. If found guilty, Selvie will face charges of first degree murder.[9]

On December 22, 2006, Cook County Circuit Judge John J. Moran, Jr. (Skokie courthouse, Second District, Cook County, Illinois) placed Johnson on home confinement, preventing him from driving by himself or leaving the state of Illinois.[10] On February 8, 2007, Johnson entered a guilty plea in Cook County's Courthouse in Skokie for violating his probation.[11] On March 15, 2007, Johnson was sentenced to a 120 days in prison (Cook County Jail) and fined $2,500 for violating his probation. [12] On February 17, 2007, Johnson's lawyer contested a Lake County Circuit Court to drop Johnson's unlicensed weapons charges. His attorney claimed that since Johnson is a resident of Arizona, he does not have to abide to gun registration laws of Illinois.[13] Johnson entered a plea of not guilty on 10 counts of possessing a weapon without the proper state-required ID. [14] On December 30, 2006, Tank Johnson contacted Gurnee Police Department to file harassment charges. [15] Local youths left a toilet seat with a harassing message on his doorstep. Local news reported that the police did not disclose what the message on the garbage can said [16] Other sources claim that "Nice Job Tank" was written on the seat. The seat had been duct-taped to a garbage can filled with excrement.

On April 30, Johnson pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge as part of an arrangement with prosecutors that will keep him from serving additional jail time. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, which will be served concurrently with a four-month sentence he's already serving in the Cook County Jail for violating his probation; to donate $2,500 to the Gurnee Police Department and $2,500 to the Gurnee Exchange Club's child abuse prevention program.[17] While he was in jail, many of his teammates and coaches, including Brian Urlacher, Rex Grossman, and Lovie Smith visited Johnson.[18] His release from jail on May 13 ended his legal problems from the December 2006 weapons incident.[19] The league ultimately suspended Johnson for half of the regular season on June 4.[20]. However, he will have the opportunity to reduce the sentence to six games if he complies with Commissioner Goodell's guidelines of behavior, which include going to counseling.

On June 22, Johnson was pulled over for speeding in Gilbert, Arizona. According to the police, he was stopped by after driving forty miles per hour in a twenty-five mile per hour zone. He was also suspected of driving while impaired "to the slightest degree", but was released without being booked or charged. The Bears waived Johnson a few days after hearing the news, as general manager Jerry Angelo stated that he had no room for error left. [21] The incident would prove to be the final straw in his already tense relationship with the Bears' organization. The Bears ultimately released Johnson on June 25, claiming he "compromised the credibility" of the team.[22] Almost a week after Johnson was waived, the results from a blood test conducted on Johnson when he was pulled over confirmed his blood alcohol content was under the legal limit.[23]

On June 25, 2007, an article in The Sporting News said: "Tank Johnson tried the patience of the Chicago Bears numerous times. Still, they provided support, visited him in jail and gave him more than enough chances to turn his life around and advance his career. But after his latest run-in with the law in Arizona, the Bears had seen enough and it was time to let him go."

Defiantely a talent to be looked at in the future. But before we would even SNIFF at him we would have to see a clean track record of Social Recovery from him. And then approach him cautiously. So he's about 2 years away from that being a possibility. He will have to prove that he is through with that nonsense. Just like Eric Wright did and we took a chance on him.

I would sign him if I were the Browns GM. Two year deal, heavily incentive loaded and wording that I can get the signing bonus back if he screws up again. We need him.

He can't start serving his suspension until he's under contract with a team.
