Browns owner Dee Haslam steps down as CEO of RIVR Media

By Dan Labbe, cleveland.com dlabbe@cleveland.com
Posted 11:46 AM

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns owner Dee Haslam is stepping down as CEO of RIVR Media, the company announced on Tuesday. She is doing so to devote more of her time to the Browns and the Cleveland community.

Haslam's fellow co-founder of the company, Rob Lundgren will become CEO. Haslam will remain a partner and executive producer.

"Television production has been a life-long passion and I have taken great pride in building RIVR Media with Rob and Lori and establishing a prolific production house in Knoxville," Haslam said in a release. "We love creatively bringing exceptional stories to life to engage viewers around the world. While I may transition roles, I will remain involved and committed to our consistent production of entertaining and unique content and am excited to see how we continue to evolve."

more time to stitch our uniforms

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

She's far too rich for that. I'm sure they have a sweat shop overseas to handle that.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

This makes me wonder if something is coming down the pipe that is taking Jimmy away from the team.

Or, perhaps, as a couple they've realized that she is better at running it than he is.... e.g. he's too much of a fan and pushes front offices to draft popular QB's that are a train wreck and should have been avoided?

Browns is the Browns

And her hubby is off the hook. Amazing:

I'm sorry. I couldn't careless about the Haslams.

I absolutely do not trust them.

What I mean is, I don't think their intentions are:

"Bring a winning team to Cleveland." or even "Make Cleveland Browns fans happy."

If I'm right in my bold statements, the Haslams have been 100% effective.

Cleveland has been beleaguered with terrible major league sports team owners since Mickey McBride and Dave Jones.

For you non-history majors - Arthur "Mickey" McBride founded the Cleveland Browns. McBride was followed as Browns owner by Jones in 1953.

By far the two most successful Cleveland Browns owners.

Just curious as to why you think this, I think they have been OK. They've spent money, lowered season ticket prices because we've been so crappy, and thought outside the box. Jimmy knows he is sitting on a goldmine (more of one than it already is) if they can build a perennial winner. To me, they've done nothing but try to do this. Am I happy with how bad we have been, no. To think they are happy about it is mind-boggling to me.

An interesting comment/remark/situation today when I listened to Landry's conference... not a 100% quote but:

"I'm so thankful for Dee and, and uh............... um the whole Cleveland Browns organization"

Granted he may have had a little brain fart there under the mic, but he thanked Dee specifically and everyone else got a few stutters, followed by a long silence and then a general thank you?

It was interesting to me. Listen to it, it was at the very beginning of his conference.

So let's see.

Let’s review. Since Haslam bought the Browns.

2014... 7-9
2015... 3-13
2016 ...1-15
2017… 0-16

You do realize this is virtually impossible to do unless it’s what you’re trying to do.

Perhaps instead of “mind boggling” you mean “mindless”.

From your post above:

"I think they have been OK."

Anyway, back here on planet Earth. The Browns would (will) be worth a lot more money in say San Antonio. The 7th largest city in the U.S.

I'm curious. Do you think Haslam has one iota of allegiance to the city and people of Cleveland?

You know what? Never mind.

I apologize. I should know better.

Lol, OK. Was just wondering your reasoning, not wanting to argue. I just disagree that they haven't tried. I feel they've spent an unfathomable amount of money trying to right the ship. The total teardown when Sashi was hired was going to be very, very painful. It was a huge risk and I think it was completely miscalculated how bad we would be. I never cared for the Sashi hire, but he did put us in a great position for this season. We have a football guy in charge now, and while Hue has been bad he wasn't given much to work with - I don't mind keeping him for another season to try to keep some consistency. We've got an experienced OC now as well.

They aren't moving the team. No, I don't think they have any allegiance to the city nor the people of Cleveland but that doesn't mean they are moving the team. Is Dan Gilbert going to move the Cavs too?

And thanks for calling me stupid. Classy.

I agree.

We have suffered through some bad seasons, but I don't think Jimmy hasn't tried and or doesn't care.

I think he has tried harder and cares more about the Browns then Randy Lerner ever did.

Gotta agree too. I think he's done a number of things wrong, and literally had to pay for his mistakes. But he's battled (sorry) to right this ship and I think finally his path appears to be a good one.

The team was just a burden to Jr.

I think you're just backing your home boy. lol

But don't get me wrong. I think Haslam has tried. But I think Lerner tried just as hard. Just because they have both failed doesn't mean that both didn't try.

In case you missed it, the only time we actually made the playoffs since our return in 1999 was when Lerner ran this team.

I didn't say Lerner didn't care or try. I said I think that Jimmy cares more. Both are/were pretty free with the wallet.

I think Randy was plain lost and Haslam thought he knew more than he did at the start. Both tried.

This has been a persistent sub-theme on the boards for many, many years. Matter of fact, I remember hearing this about Randy before any of us knew who Jimmy & Dee were.

Now, someone who's more plugged-in than me might know better, but I was distinctly under the impression that keeping the Browns in Cleveland was a condition of sale when Randy handed the keys to the Haslams.

If that is true (and I'm pretty sure my memory is correct on this), the Haslams have every incentive to produce a winner here. It means that the Browns are safely in Cleveland unless the Haslams sell the team, and don't require 216 perpetuity as a condition of sale.

Help me out, Dawgs?
Do I have this right?

Haslam gave Lerner a "personal guarantee", but there's nothing binding in any sense.

Haslam could move the team tomorrow if he wanted (though I don't see any benefit, given the fact that Cleveland will still give you 85% capacity if you go 0-16).

Now there's a sentence a person doesn't see every day.

Darn right. I have told people for years that if a law was passed where you could only eat one type of meat, I'd pick Bacon.

You can eat that at every meal. and be like Shorty....you know....Jack Palance, The Three Amigos.
