Nobody will come close to Wooden's titles with UCLA or Dimaggio's streak but I believe the best record was Cal Ripkens streak considering how much damage your body recieves when playing any kind of sport.

Gretzky's career points total (about 2,600 or something).
DiMaggio's streak is at least approachable (Rose had 44), but I think it may be a long time before anyone throws eight no-hitters.

One of the most difficult things to do in sports is to hit a pitched baseball; if a player does it 1 out of 3 times he is considered a "star."
He not only has the record for base hits, he played the game as it was meant to be played.........all out.

I'd have to say Rickey Henderson's single-season stolen bases record, as well as his career stolen bases record. But, I should point out that I have an unhealthy man-crush on Rickey Henderson and have my whole life.

Tonight Tom Glavin goes for win 300.
I heard quite a few good baseball people say he could possibly be the last 300 game winner....ever.
Randy Johnson is close, but he is pretty much done and with the way baseball has changed, many don't see many more 300 game winners.
Watch the game tonight, we might not see another for a very long time.....if ever.
Most sports over the years make rule changes that favor the offense, so any record that has to do with offensive numbers is possibly at stake at some point in time while those that reflect the defensive side of the game have a good chance of standing.

That number is amazing. Nobody will ever come close to most career wins, single-season or career shutouts, innings pitched, complete games, etc. because of how pitching has changed in baseball. Consider that of the younger pitchers in baseball today the one with the best chance at 300 wins is probably C.C. Sabathia since he'll likely be around 100 wins this season. You have to start pitching so young and be on good teams to get toward 300 wins now.

I agree with that career wins as a pitcher is one heck of a feat, but I'll still have to go with the 56 game hitting streak. That's just unfathonable today. Like someone above said, going 1 for 3 makes you a star ... and you have to carry those 33% odds and get a hit every single day for 56 days. One off day, and you're gone. And then when you throw in the pressue you get from the press these days when you reach 30 in a row ... let alone 50 ... it's not happening again.

John Brophy spent most if not all of his career in the minor leagues, BTW.
I don't think Crosby will catch Gretzky, because the game has changed, scoring is down compared to the 1980s. Very unlikely he'll be able to do it.

What? totally overrated? I fail to see how thats overrated. That record is unlikely to be touched in our lifetimes if ever. One could argue that you MAY be right on Ripken.. some will argue that all he did was show up to work. Personally, I think thats a weak argument but I'm not going to go to the wall for it. 56 games is another story altogether.

Yes, I know. He was also coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs and coach of the Hampton Roads Admirals, my local minor league team. You should read his interviews of his career. He stated that his job as a defenseman was to kill opposing players that got near his net. It was great to watch him beat up rival coaches too.

Ripken's record is... I dunno, it's not like he needed a special talent for it (other than to stay in the big leagues for that long), but it's still quite remarkable.
I agree with the poster above about Henderson's stolen base record. THAT one may stand for another 50 years, maybe a lot longer than that, unless the game changes again.
DiMaggio's streak is awesome, it can be beaten, but even a 30-game streak is rare. A 56-gamer... hard to top

Brophy was quite a character. We used to harass the crap out of him when he came to the Toledo Sports Arena. You could tell he was getting a little senile his last few years with the Chiefs.

those yankee teams didn't have much of a higher payroll than anyone else when they had guys like scott brosius, paul o'neill, joe girardi, mariano duncan, etc...
those were great teams, and the payroll wasn't 200m
