To be honest we have been everywhere for months..... we just figured we wait to make sure which team to invade. I went to the brownsboard first but the Mayfield hate is some of the worst I have seen. So I chose this board....you guys seem a little bit more supportive. I understand the issue of drafting a person that reminds you so much of Manziel..... but the comparison isn’t warranted. You will see day one he is so much a better leader and passer it’s not funny. He isn’t as mobile as most make him out to be but he can escape pressure and throws on the run well. Give him a solid wr core and OL and he will make enough plays to keep the Browns in games. He is a good teammate and will make everyone around him better. Seems like this regime is drafting impact players and doing it right. Chubb could be the steal of the draft if he can get his speed back.

Welcome. Browns fans are cynical of everything because of the losing but if Baker is who I think he is he will be treated like a god in this city...trust me lol

Welcome to the board. I wanted Darnold but am 100% with Baker. The more I learn about him and hear him speak the more I believe we made the right choice. We may finally have a winner here with our Cleveland Browns!!!

Welcome to the board, read the newbie primer, which is a nice way of saying. This place doesn't want folks to start new topics, it says you are able , but 90% of the time the topic will be, moved, to a different category,
combined with another thread,
and folks will say you should have, could have put it in another,
and there are very tricky ways to decide which forum any topic belongs in.

We need to stick the Mayfield pick out, but the average time a Browns QB gets is 18 months, to prove himself.

Realize there are only 4 or 5 regular members here that were in Bakers corner pre-draft, I was one of them, hope he has the best success.

Though many are trying to come around there is a large group of hate that the pick wasn't Darnold, and some Rosen, though mostly consensous that Allen wouldn't have been good either.

Nobody thinks he will see over his offensive line, and just because this guy, (with a lot of learning to do) because the NFL is a more complex game, is here doesn't mean the Browns are going to start out winning week 1.

The reasonable expectation of 4-12 this coming year should not be alarming, because , there's some here who want to give Tyrod Taylor the full season, and A head coach who is a litte misunderstood, to be nice.

And a track record against the Stealers, well lets say their Qb is the winningest Qb in our Stadium which was built in 99.

We have 4 and 1/2 months until the season starts, "reasonably" mid December before he could show any success, best case scenario.

So stick around this place is nice, this thread topic will probably soon be moved to tailgate, or everything else, if it hasn't already.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

1, the immediate post draft period is full of high intensity emotion. Not getting the players we wanted and an 18 history of front offices that most of us could have done better than at drafting players.

Most people were expecting Darnold because of mock drafts and the report that 17 of 24 GM's had him as their #1 Qb in this draft.

So it isn't personal against Mayfield, it is the worry that we screwed up. Manziel is just the tip of the iceberg. We have had so many failed 1st round picks over the years, it's like we were trying to make the wrong pick, but nobody could miss that many choices on purpose.

2, As for starting new threads, no worries. The point is to not start a thread on a topic that already has an active thread. To be honest, threads closer in topic to other threads than this is to a Mayfield thread occur rather frequently.

Welcome to the board.

I am liking the Mayfield pick more and more as time goes on. I don't really view his cockiness as a negative. I think it is more of an asset than it is a liability.

I really didn't want Sam Darnold. Everyone and their mom wanted Darnold on this board.

I think Sam Darnold will have a Jekyll / Hyde career similar to Andy Dalton.

I was in the ABA camp
Anybody but Allen

I think a lot were, but when the choice was someone else they didn't know how to react because they were force fed Allen vs Darnold for so long - up until the day before the draft.

It was Allen vs. Darnold for about two months... The entire lead up to this draft was a little bizarre.

I would have been a Rosen guy if I believed he wanted to play for us and had the right motor. I just don't think he does.

I kept hearing about Darnold, Rosen and Allen leading up to the draft. There wasn't too much about Mayfield which was a little odd but understandable given some of his antics.

When I was watching college football this past year it seemed like every other game break was Mayfield throwing a bomb of a TD. I kept thinking, I wonder who will take him? That's a nice ball.

I didn't want him but I hope he proves me wrong. I'm starting to come round, since I have no other choice, but he will have to prove it to me when he gets the chance . Tyrod is our QB FYI ....

Welcome Boomer.

I am not a Baker fan, and I was ... unhappy when we drafted him ..... but he is a Brown now, and I am hoping that he will prove me wrong, and that he'll be a great one.

Welcome to the board.

I am one of the Darnold crowd, although not because of mock drafts. I have believed for over a year that he is going to be an NFL star. As for Mayfield, I don't like his antics, most notably (but not restricted to) throwing a ball at the head of an unsuspecting opponent. That said, as long as he doesn't embarrass the city and fans, he's a Brown, and he has my support. Since he seems to thrive on having to prove himself and win people over, I figure that means I'm doing him a favor by waiting for him to prove himself to me.

Now that I got that off my chest, Keebler (as Mayfield has been dubbed by one of the board members) is very smart, ultra competitive, the most accurate passer in the class, a good decision maker (at least with the football), very good under pressure, the only college player to go from walk-on (twice) to Heisman winner, and the only walk-on to ever be drafted first overall in the draft. Oh, and he has the lowest turnover rate in the class as well. There is no denying his abilities. But none of that automatically translates into NFL success. He will have a year (maybe less) to learn. Then he will have to prove this wasn't just another wasted first round pick by the Browns.

I think our only real problem with him is most think Darnold will be better. I am sure anyone who thinks this hopes they are wrong. Welcome we have a good board. People here love to talk football for the most part.

We, huh? Thanks for the scouting report on Mayfield. I wasn't familiar with the guy. Remember, Mayfield is a Brown now, thats a tradition that runs much deeper than one man. You want in? My arms are open, but don't presume a couple of frat boys are going to light a fire under anyone who's bled Brown and Orange for generations.

Welcome to the board, hope you stick around!

I quoted this statement from you because I think it highlights exactly my complaint with drafting Baker at #1. In my opinion, the person you draft at #1 OVERALL must project to be a future star. I don't think he should be someone who can keep a team "in games" ... but only if everything around him is ideal. To me, that type of player (especially QB) is a 2nd or 3rd round selection.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Boomer Sooner...welcome and thank you for your thoughts. Firstly, my sister went to OU so I have been to Norman and I saw a few games too. As a young boy I even saw a couple when Switzer was coach and Billy Sims was still there. That is going back a bit! Ha!

Anyway, I think you will find that we are a cynical fanbase but 20 years of losing (preceded by your team moving!), the butt of national jokes, constantly getting it wrong with coaches, GMs and drafts and then when the stars are perfectly aligned for you (this year) you roll the dice and gamble rather than take the sure fire safe bet (not just on Baker but on a few other picks too). That is a legit worry. I care less about his rah-rah antics than some, but all I want is for the team to win again. I hope we see the Baker Mayfield we saw in the 1st half of the Semi-Final game against Georgia and not the Baker Mayfield we saw in the 2nd half (who struggled when the Bulldogs adjusted and tightened the window). There is no doubt he is a winner. There is no doubt he has the best stats. But, 95% of his game is in the shotgun, rarely a huddle, spread offense against weaker defenses. Can he convert and learn the NFL game? I hope so. I really do. John Dorsey believes he can and apparently all our coaches and the scouts did too. They had the chance to hit a grand slam....we won't know if he did until he sees action. But, we wouldn't know if he did had he chosen Darnold or Rosen. So the questions would still be there with them too, however, they were viewed as safer picks.

Like a couple others have said...if it does all work out Baker will be a revered as a god in the city of Cleveland. Even more so than LeBron. Cleveland is a football town. But, if the Baker pick doesn't work out and any of the others end up being studs with their franchise...we will set the team back years. Coaches will be fired, GM fired, possibly an owner who sells and all back to square one. That is a legit worry for all of us true Browns fans who have been fans all our lives. I am old enough to remember the 70s & 80s. My dad remembers the 50s and 60s. My son, however, all he has known is a terrible team who have constantly lost (bar 2007 which he barely remembers and the first half of 2014).

So....anyway....welcome. Stay here but please understand our pain. As a Sooner fan you have always had security. Even in a down year the reputation of the program is so strong that you can recruit star players and swing it around fairly easily. OU's program isn't like...say, Oregon State where a couple bad years can decimate a program. Your reputation is in tact and the star recruits will still want to come play in Norman. Us Browns fans...we have been waiting for 20+ years, heard countless promises and people saying all the right things, but so far we have yet to see any results. Like I said...the stars were aligned this year for us to control our destiny. I sincerely hope we got it right and that Baker is our guy. Until proven otherwise I am 100% behind him and a fan.

The Darnold love is so bizarre the guy had like one great game vs Penn state ( totallly overrated Penn state) in the rose bowl. If you watched his game you would know he doesn’t have very good accuracy and makes very poor reads. He tired tries to use his arm to make throws that are just to risky. Mayfield arm is just as strong and is more accurate. I know the worry about him being short ..... Oklahoma had one of the best offensive lines last year in college footballl and some of those dudes were 6”8 and he stood in the pocket and made it happen. I understand this is the NFL, but if the receivers can get a little bit open he will put it on them. I know Taylor is projected to be number one, but I am tellling you now he is going to be pushing the Browns to start him week 1 and they will probably think to themselves that he’s their best qb and best chance to win. I know their is a learning curve but It wouldn’t surprise me at all. The Browns need to have patience with this qb .... what is the point of drafting someone this high and not letting them have a chance. Kizer and Manziel should of never been drafted as high as they did but they almost had to because their wasn’t anyone ready to start. The team will get better with better decisions and that’s why their is a new gm in town and it’s already started. It’s not going to happen one one year it may take 4 or 10 but things are improving.

As Browns fans we know all to well the allure of always putting in the rookie "to see what we got" or because "he is a first rounder he must start". Well the car wreck that ensues is never pretty and the names we have ruined doing so is a testament to that fact. It is time we let a tried and true vet with tread left on the tires start and allow the rook to learn and grow before we curb stomp them and their confidence onto a list of other QB fatalitys.

I am actually impressed with Baker. I was a doubter and not very well versed on him as a player or as a person. I fell for all the "smart" people to tell me who he was and what he was about. I never put much stock into his height being a negative because if you are gonna make it through high school and college that height then you obviously understand how to find and use throwing angles. My concerns were more the scheme he played in and the Big 12 defenses he faced (lets face it those D's give up madden stats every saturday) and how he would translate from that aspect to the NFL. I have come to peace with that line of thinking now I want to see what he does this summer and I will reevaluate my opinion of his play then.

By the way welcome aboard should be an interesting ride either way it shapes up.
