So you're actually saying we should have taken Darnold over who we think is the best because you believe they should want a unified fanbase?
That's the craziest thing I've ever heard...
I actually like your posts and your thoughts, but this one you're WAY off base, I'm sorry.
It shouldn't matter who they pick, just win baby! Winning solves everything. We'll be "unified" if they just win. That's what it's all about.
The people here saying we screwed up and should have drafted someone else because Mayfield has personality issues is just laughable. You guys are going to drive me crazy until september. man alive....

Jets traded because they knew we were taking Mayfield. Darnold wouldn't never be there at 6, Mayfield would.
Um, Mayfield wouldn't have been there at 6. And I agree Darnold probably wouldn't have either... When the draft started the only 2 quarterback guaranteed to go in the top 5 were Darnold and Mayfield and we were taking one of them.

How in the world would they know that??? The majority of our own front office didn't know Mayfield was the pick until the day before the draft.
Actually according to Dorsey the decision was made Monday, 3 days before the draft.
But point well taken, just a ridiculous statement by a poster...smh Actually according to the NY media they are stating Mayfield was #1 on the FO board. The feeling is that they need to win NOW as ownership will not be patient another year. I got a feeling Darnold is going to get put out there before his time.

The NFL isn't the NCAA. Ignoring bad behavior isn't going to happen in the pros. By my count he started three years and there were five incidents that gained enough media coverage that we know about.
Now I'm not saying it will be a problem moving forward. But pretending it hasn't been an issue to this point is not having a firm grasp of the obvious. It hasn't been an issue for his University though has it? They won games, he missed all of two plays. So non football issue.

Hilarious that I was a Darnold guy and now I have to sit here and defend Mayfield because the only thing people are upset about is that he made obscene gestures in college.
What happened to the people that said they just didn't want Allen and we'd be ok? Because Mayfield @ #1 is too much. If we had drafted Saquan and take Mayfield @4 because Darnold was not there, I would understand. I understand not drafting Rosen because Haslam would never have a liberal QB. It's coming out now that the Giants and Jets both liked Mayfield, and that other clubs had him #1. And I don't think Haslam would care about Rosen being liberal because Dorsey is the one who made the pick

Bone I agree with most of your posts and especially your last one. I wanted Darnold but am now in on Baker. Give him solid coaching, which we have with Haley and Zampese, and weapons which I feel we also have, if they can stay on the field, and we will be pleasantly surprised. I have faith in John Dorsey and his staff that they did the right things and will continue to do so. Big problem though, Baker says he already "knows" the NFL game, you didn't know that? http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2018/story/...-transition-nflIn Mayfield's first appearance with his new team, the former Oklahoma quarterback discussed his leadership and said the transition from the Sooners' Air Raid offense to the NFL won't be too difficult. " The game of football is the same," Mayfield said. "It's just a matter of terminology, language and how they teach it, so you're not going to find one guy who is reinventing the wheel." - Baker Mayfield See, Football at the college level is exactly the same as it is at the pro level except terminology, thats what Baker says. I can see it already, Baker and Haley are NOT going to get along. Haley is known for being abrasive, he won't tolerate Baker hotdogging it, doing whatever he wants. Everything else we have tried has failed, so maybe this works out for once. I hope it does, but im not holding my breath. I have heard so many rookie QB's say the same thing over the years. What's he supposed to say? Man the transition is going to be hard, and hopefully it works out? Rookie QB's saying the transition would be easy? I don't remember any... That's because you don't want to. It fits your narrative to hate the kid. You were the one saying there were plenty rookie QB's saying that... I just don't recall any because this is something stupid to say. You see most of the rookies say they want to be signed early and start camp because play books are big, and it takes time to even understand the basics of the Offense. Now comes a kid and says its easy... and you say its a normal thing to do, which it isn't. I honestly don't remember ever a rookie QB saying that, but you can post some links or name examples if you do... I was referring to rookie QB's stating that it's just learning a new language. You can easily google articles with people saying that. One by Jordan Palmer. How the NFL playbook is more complex and a player can get lost in learning an entirely new language for basic concepts.

And I don't think Haslam would care about Rosen being liberal because Dorsey is the one who made the pick I just read this on MMQB too: • They got very little action on the No. 4 pick. Four teams called Dorsey with interest in moving up. None got serious. Only one team (I’d guess Arizona) offered a 2019 first-round pick as part of the package to move, which is surprising considering that two quarterbacks were still on the board when the fourth pick came up. The team willing to include its first-rounder next year said to Dorsey before the draft began: “I’m coming up for one player and one player only, and that’s Baker Mayfield.” As Dorsey said: “I knew all along it wasn’t going to happen.” So for those wondering why the Browns didn’t try to pillage some team by moving down a few spots, they never had the chance. My guess is that Darnold and Mayfield were 1-2 on a lot of boards. I really, really doubt he would get past the Jets if Darnold was gone.

First let me start by saying thanks for clearing up "the personal attacks" issue at the bottom of your post. I was a little perplexed by that at first.
Secondly let me give you an example of "what we don't know". Guice. I was certainly one who supported taking Guice at #33 or #35. It wasn't until draft day that issues surfaced about the guy. I think you're taking all of this a little too personal because he is "your guy". I'm not saying there are more issues with Mayfield. What I'm saying is I don't know. And actually, neither do you.
Secondly, yes, Mayfield was actually benched as the starter the game after the crotch grabbing incident. Of course since it's the NCAA it was only for the first set of downs as a slap on the wrist type thing.
I'm not sure why you're trying to act like the NFL has the same set of standards the NCAA does. We both know if an NFL QB intentionally beans an opposing player in the head with the football, a suspension and fine are coming. You know that and I know that.
We also both know that if that crotch grabbing incident where he flips off and curses the other team in some immature tirade happened, the NFL will act swiftly with punishment. I'm not sure what point you were trying to make there because it simply doesn't exist.
The NFL is serious about their public perception and actions detrimental to the league. So much so that it's a part of the contract you sign as an NFL player.
And it has nothing to do with "Rosen being my guy". He too has injury questions and that would be a logical concern I would expect to see had he been the choice. Had Darnold been the pick I would expect to see posters concerned with his fumbling and protecting the ball. That would be a logical concern about him.
It's time you face the fact that every single one of these QB picks had some type of question surrounding them. Yes, even "your boy". And "your boy" has shown a maturity issue. A self control issue when the adrenaline is flowing. Now you may not like hearing that but there is abundant evidence to show that it's true.
Here's what you haven't seen me say. You haven't seen me say that it will be an ongoing problem. You haven't seen me make any predictions that he will be a problem child. You haven't seen me say that drafting him was a mistake.
Here's what you have seen me say. That it may simply be an immaturity problem that kids often have and he will outgrow it. That as our QB I will root for him and support him.
You need to stop acting like people have no reason to have any concern about him, because they do. Just like they had reasons to have concerns about any of the top QB selections. (yes, even "my boy") All of them have their flaws as human beings.
And my last little piece of advice, whether you take it or not, is to figure out who your enemies are and aren't. I like the kid. I have my concerns, but i like the kid. I'm not your enemy here.

Yeah, the NFL and the NCAA are the same thing. The NFL wouldn't suspend a player for smacking an opposing player up side the head with the football. The NFL wouldn't suspend anyone for grabbing their crotch, flipping off the opposing team while cursing them in some temper tantrum. Yeah, they're the exact same thing! no problem! lmao

Now that he's in the NFL, we will have to base our future judgments with Baker on actual NFL behavior. Maybe it's just that there are people who think he's got a bad character and don't like him, and that I think what he's done is so minor compared to the kids out there who really have character concerns.

I think the Jets made the trade with the intention of TAKING Mayfield. I think they thought Darnold/Rosen would go 1-2 and they'd get Mayfield at 3
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Browns personnel exec had Darnold rated No. 1; explains change to Mayfield A right-hand man to Browns general manager John Dorsey gives an insightful look at the Browns draft to the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club. Alonzo Highsmith explains what changed his mind about Baker Mayfield. CANTON TWP. Tough guy Alonzo Highsmith took a candid look at the Cleveland Browns draft he helped shape. “We got some interesting players,” Highsmith (John Dorsey’s right-hand man) told the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club Monday. “You’ve heard enough talk. I could tell you the same story everyone else has told you since 1999.” The Browns had a No. 1 overall pick for only the third time in the expansion era, spending it amid widespread debate on Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. Someone in the crowd asked Highsmith to explain what the Browns saw in Mayfield that they didn’t see in Sam Darnold, the consensus pre-draft projection of who they would take. Highsmith, who began his career in scouting alongside Dorsey in the late 1990s, told a little joke and then gave a serious answer. “Here’s the honest to God’s truth,” he said. “From the start of his college football season to the end of the season, I had Darnold No. 1 and Baker No. 2, (Josh) Rosen No. 3, (Lamar) Jackson No. 4 and (Josh) Allen after that. “On our way through everything, you couldn’t tell me Darnold wasn’t the best. I did all my evaluations of the season. “Then comes the part where you meet them off the field. You watch their workouts. You watch everything. And Baker blew me away. Highly, highly intelligent. Highly competitive. “And he had a trait that some of the good ones have. I call it efficacy. That includes the power to effect other people. I thought that of all the quarterbacks I watched, he stood out far and above the other guys. When he walked into a room, you knew he was there.” Highsmith did lots of traveling to prepare for the draft. “I was at an airport,” he said. “UCLA’s volleyball team was in front of me. You heard so much about Rosen. He’s this or that. We all know how people talk. “So I asked one of the volleyball coaches, ‘What’s Rosen like?’ He said, ‘Aaaaa, you should probably ask his girlfriend. She’s one of the players. She’s over there.’ “I’m like, ‘All right coach. That’s good enough.’” “I don’t know what all this means, but there was something about him that bothered me.” USC’s Darnold went to the Jets at No. 3. Wyoming’s Josh Allen went to the Bills at No. 7. UCLA’s Rosen was picked by Arizona at No. 10. Louisville’s Jackson went to Baltimore at No. 32. Dorsey supposedly was in love with Allen as a size-talent prospect along the lines of Ben Roethlisberger. Allen supporters said his supporting cast helped explain his poor completion percentage. “Baker Mayfield lost two receivers and he was the same quarterback,” Highsmith said. “Josh Allen ... big arm ... he could throw the ball from here to the moon. When they have to make excuses ... why are they not completing passes? That’s a problem.” Highsmith is in the Miami Hurricanes Hall of Fame as a fullback so revered he was the third pick of the 1987 draft. A bum knee shortened his NFL career, but he turned to boxing and posted a 27-1-1 record in the heavyweight division. One of his 23 knockout victims was fellow NFLer-turned-fighter Mark Gastineau. He mostly beat lesser fighters in places like the Ho-Chunk Casino in Baraboo, Wisc., but he took the sport seriously, got himself on undercards headlined by Oscar De La Hoya and George Foreman, and was pitted against the famous Gastineau on Nov. 3, 1996 in Tokyo. Gastineau’s reputation as a boxer was “fraud.” Highsmith made him look like one. In 1998, a serious arm injury left Highsmith unable to use his bludgeon of a right jab. Two months after his last fight, prior to the 1999 draft that ushered the Cleveland Browns back into the NFL, a former football teammate told Highsmith that Ron Wolf needed a scout in Green Bay. Wolf gave him a job. Highsmith went to work for the Packers’ director of college scouting, John Dorsey. “John is one of my best friends,” Highsmith said. “I have a chip on my shoulder, and I know John has a chip on his shoulder.” http://www.cantonrep.com/sports/20180430...nge-to-mayfield

Very interesting read - especially the part about Arizona saying they would only trade up for 4 for Mayfield if he was there. MMQB - Mayfield pick on the DL Key Points: - They got very little action on the No. 4 pick. Four teams called Dorsey with interest in moving up. None got serious. The team willing to include its first-rounder next year said to Dorsey before the draft began: “I’m coming up for one player and one player only, and that’s Baker Mayfield.” - Dorsey would be the only one who would know what the 1-through-4 order was. (on the ranking of the QB's - Sodium pentathol, and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, came up in the wake of the Denzel Ward pick. Truth serum. My question to Dorsey on Friday morning: “If we gave Gregg Williams sodium pentathol right now, who would he have said he wanted with the fourth pick—Denzel Ward or Bradley Chubb?” Dorsey pulled out his cell phone and rang Williams. I asked him the question. Williams: “Ward. The reason is our need for a press cover cornerback. Denzel probably plays that position as well as anyone I’ve seen in college football in some time.

Baker Mayfield was the top QB for at least half a dozen teams besides the Browns, sources say Updated 1:06 PM; Posted 11:50 AM By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns raised some eyebrows among fans and media by drafting Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall. Most folks thought they'd opt for Sam Darnold or cannon-armed Josh Allen. But John Dorsey revealed over the weekend that three key members of the Browns organization independently had Mayfield ranked No. 1 when scouting him last fall, despite the fact they weren't working together at the time: Dorsey, Eliot Wolf and Browns consultant Scot McCloughan, who could land a permanent position with the club. Dorsey was out of work after having been fired by the Chiefs, but scouting players heavily to be ready for his next opportunity; Wolf was director of football operations for the Packers, and McCloughan was running Instinctive Scouting after being fired by the Redskins in March of last year. Those three, along with former Packers and current Browns personnel exec Alonzo Highsmith, all reached the same conclusion: that Mayfield was the best quarterback in the rich 2018 class. But they weren't the only ones. Of the 12 teams I've heard back from so far, four had Baker as their QB1, and two more gave me a strong indication that he was. Another league source named two other teams that he believes had him No. 1. Of the four 'definites,' that I spoke directly with, three were in the AFC and one was in the NFC. Said one team official: "The kid has great swagger. I've never been around a guy that attracts people like that. ..the shotgun thing is not going to hurt him. The level of competition and height (6-0) are real, but he'll do fine if he gets the ball out on time.'' He went on to say that Mayfield has tremendous accuracy, and above average arm strength, more than enough to make all the throws. But it was his fiery personality that convinced him Mayfield would be able to overcome the height issue. A personnel executive from another team said, "loved the player. Great competitor and very gifted thrower. Huge arm but also great accuracy. Doesn't throw interceptions. Not as athletic as Russell Wilson or Johnny Manziel, but still makes unique and unscripted plays.'' Mayfield 3rd on depth chart and Jackson committed to starting Taylor The Jets seemed to have Mayfield atop their board heading into the draft, but Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News reported on Saturday that Sam Darnold, whom the Jets picked at No. 3 when he fell like bread from the sky into their hands, that Darnold was their QB1. The Rams also may have had Mayfield QB1 based on how coach Sean McVay feels about him. ESPN's Jeff Darlington reported over the weekend that McCoy would've sold the farm for Mayfield if he didn't already have Jared Goff. McVay sat next the Mayfield on his flight to the NFL Combine last month and advised him on how to handle media interviews. So, the Browns have taken some heat for drafting Mayfield No. 1 overall, but they have plenty of company in the NFL in believing that he was the best in this class. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...ncart_big-photo

Thats scary, we know Highsmith was a Darnold guy till they started meeting. But that above sounds like Dorsey was high on Allen, phew, dodged that bullet.
Guys not much mentioned or talked about by the football people is the off field problems of Mayfield. I don't think its a variable of concern. Just we thought we had someone and they turned into a DRUNK...or was one already. Thanks to the Homeless guy we took him. Well no such thing with Mayfield.
Reports both Jets n Giants had him on the board as #1.
Team only would trade up to #4 for one player only Mayfield?
I hope you all are a little more rest assured I know, don't take my word for it, don't care. But so many others.

Reports both Jets n Giants had him on the board as #1.
Team only would trade up to #4 for one player only Mayfield?
I hope you all are a little more rest assured I know, don't take my word for it, don't care. But so many others.
jmho At this point, since he’s on my team, I’ll only be reassured when Mayfield is winning. In the meantime he needs to mature and learn. The fact Highsmith watched all the film and liked Darnold the most, but then got talked into mayfield isn’t, to me, reassuring. I’d prefer he went with what he saw on tape. Not how some words or ‘attitude’ swayed him. Who liked him and who didn’t is now moot. He’s a Brown. Just shut up and win.

So you're saying that he should not let his personal, face to face time with the candidates influence him?? That's nuts.

Browns VP of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith said No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield "blew the team away" with his off-field intangibles. "Here's the honest to God's truth," Highsmith said. "From the start of his college football season to the end of the season, I had [Sam] Darnold No. 1 and Baker No. 2. On our way through everything, you couldn't tell me Darnold wasn't the best. Then comes the part where you meet them off the field. You watch their workouts. You watch everything. And Baker blew me away. Highly, highly intelligent. Highly competitive. When he walked into a room, you knew he was there." Highsmith said Josh Allen was last among the first-round quarterbacks on the Browns' board. Actions speak louder than words. That’s all. I agree - which is why I like Mayfield so much. His body of work on the field beats out all the other QBs in the class.

Sure Mary Kay, 12 other teams returned your calls and truthfully told you who they had at the top of their draft boards.

From what I have read and heard...both Jackson and Highsmith's comments sound to me that their private workouts were the deciding factor. Especially when Baker remembered, analyzed & broke down plays as well as what he sees/anticipates (the x's & o's), on the whiteboard when the coaches presented him with challenging NFL scenarios. Apparently that is when he totally blew them both away. I can see how that could be a huge deciding factor to sway somebody from one guy to another (especially if Darnold didn't fare anywhere near as good).

So, Baker Mayfield has his life, marketing and his own branding already pretty sorted out. He knows that his name and his brand are marketable, and he is a kid who grew up in the digital age. Therefore, he has already been making these short documentaries about his travels to get to the NFL, which include the combine and draft day. Episode 9, titled "Send The Playbook", focuses entirely on Draft Day and Dorsey's #1 selection/phone call. Oh, and while you are there you can buy your own "BM" stamped water bottle (Capitalism, baby). https://behindbaker.com/

Fittingly someone with the initials BM is a Brown
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

But if he really wants money, he needs to turn this into a media company and open it up to VCs. I believe Kobe got $100 million funding for his company. I know Tom Brady recently just got paid for doing the same thing. This is three years after LeBron got 15 mil for uninterrupted.

I don't think money is Baker's main concern. And that's what's going to make him so great. I'm excited for the next 10-15 years. He better be on the field September 9, or we're doing it wrong.

If he loses all this will look all the more absurd. Hey Baker Kardashian, get some wins, the marketing will take care of itself.

Actions speak louder than words. That’s all. I'm hoping it was whiteboard work that swayed him during that personal meeting. I'm hoping that Mayfield blew them away with his whiteboard skills while Darnold did not. We did hear prior to the draft that Darnold was less than impressive at the whiteboard. Maybe during those personal meetings, it was determined that Mayfield had more going on between the ears. Just speculation on what we heard prior to the draft.

I love to hear Bernie break stuff down and would be curious to see those two together. BTW, anyone hear any thoughts about the kid from Kosar? QB wise I value his opinions.

I agree with the assumption about the whiteboard work. My problem is with 3 years of NFL coaching Darnold can likely be just as good as Baker on the white board. And Darnold will then also finally be 23 years old. Like Baker is today. The difference is Darnold will also still be 6’3” and 230#. And Baker can never be that. Not in 3 years. Not ever. There’s two things that can’t be coached up, size and speed. Darnold has size. Baker has neither.

Darnold was my guy. I wanted him bad. Wanted to buy my first jersey with his name on it.
But it's over. They did their work on all the guys and Mayfield is their guy.
I still believe Darnold is going to be very good.
But all that doesn't matter. Speculation is over.
No matter where you are drafted now the time has come to prove what you can do.
We all had guys we wanted or guys maybe we didn't want.
But now we have our team and we will find out what we really have.

Just curious bone .... we were both Darnold guys ... but u often say that were not privy to the meetings and they are important ... if what there saying is true about the meetings ... and that’s IF ...
IF Baker blew away everyone on the white board and Sam was OK ...
How much weight would u put on that and could it have possibly changed your mind? ...
