It's like there's an obligation for the media, players and even fans to always include the "5th major" designation when talking about The Players Championship. Heck, even treating it like a major. Here's the thing though, it's not. It's a very good tournament and a great iconic course, but it's not a major. It's not even the "5th major" to me.

Rickie Fowler won The Players in 2015 and he's still branded with the "...hasn't won a major" rider. If the TPC was or was like a major, then nobody would continue to hold it over him.

I'll still watch and enjoy it this weekend, but I refuse to call it something it's not. Now that I'm done with this rant, I need to go yell at some kids walking on my lawn. tongue

You apparently see yourself as a purist martyr.

The TPC is universally regarded as the strongest field top-to-bottom.

And with the largest purse.

The strongest field and the most price money.

More than any of the other 4 majors.

So go ahead and force yourself to watch the TPC.

The 5th Major.

Perhaps not.

Pretty much "bucket list/dream" for me. Not necessarily the whole course either. I'd be just fine playing the #17 island green over and over. rofl

Just thru intimidation I gotta put the first 3 in the drink.

Please peen, please don't tell me you played this course also. willynilly

LOL...well, I have. A few times. Anybody can play there. Just like anybody can play Pebble Beach...and yes I have.

Augusta, you have to have a invite from a member or a invite from the club pro. You can't just call up and get a tee time, and they don't reciprocate with other golf clubs.

So what are the characteristics that make a golf tournament a major then? I'll give you a hint, there are none. The only reason you think there are only 4 majors is because THAT'S WHAT THEY TOLD YOU TO THINK. Hell one of them isn't even in this country.. it's on another continent on golf courses that don't have trees and players putt from 40 yards off the green. What the hell is that? Who decided THAT should be a major? Get a grip man, you probably voted for Goldwater. tongue

Ummmm...perhaps because it's the home of golf. I take it that you don't care for links courses...

If you follow for several posts you will see that I responded to a pretty sarcastic post with an equally sarcastic post... I've been playing golf for over 40 years and I fully understand it's roots back to Scotland..

I've been counting down the days for the past month. I haven't played the game in a long time, but I still enjoy watching the majors. TV coverage (Golf Channel, etc) is excellent. Feherty (sic?) is classic...

I live about an hour or so away from Augusta. The landscaping is awesome right now. Lot's of flowering plants. Thankfully, the pine pollen is subsiding and temps should be in the high 70s to low 80s. The only downer is there is some rain on the forecast where I am at, so they will probably get some, too.

The Golf Channel sure beats the hell out of watching political channels, regardless of the fact they can go even lower than golf scores.

Love The Masters, probably my favourite golf tournament. The back nine has a lot of drama, and a player can either post a really low number or a high one. Jack Nicklaus scorching the back nine to win in '86 - a prime example.
The course is so beautiful. I would love the opportunity to play it (not from the pro tees haha, although I think the greens would be the hardest part of playing it).

Tomorrow is going to be very interesting, there's a lot of big names at or near the top of the leaderboard. Brooks Loepka after his third major title in less than a year (not that many people would notice), Tiger, Molinari..... it's going to be fun.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."
