IF he flonders his entire career we don't get to call them idiots???

Sure you can. But only if you called it beforehand.
Example: 5 years down the road, if BQ turns out to be a bust, Diam would have no right to call the people who drafted him idiots...without admitting that he also was an idiot.

Drafting BQ is an attempt to right the ship. I'm not faulting them for making the bold move it took to get him...and I'm not going to call them idiots if it fails. In 5 years I can say that it turned out to be a bad move but since I'm not saying now that it was the wrong thing to do, then I have no right to call them idiots later.

I'm glad that is all done and over with!!!! IMO, BQ will be the best QB of the 4 in camp, but that doesn't make him our starter. He needs time to sit and learn.

I can't agree with you at all. If he is the best then he should be playing, period.

If Quinn is the best, but doesnt know the system.. do u still play him? or do you do what some of you say.. "vanilla" the offense so it can work to accomodate the fact that he held out and missed so much time in camp..

This couldn't be more wrong... the Brady Quinn saga is just now officially beginning... everybody knew he would sign eventually, that was a temporary melodrama at best..... The real saga is... how good will he be.

You mean Diam and Diam, Jr (Ammo) haven't told you yet?

They don't like to talk about it too much, but if you PM them, I'm sure they'll tell you.

Seriously, I think he's going to be just fine. I honestly don't think he can be worse than what we have.

Wow, that's depressing to say.

The Steelers "vanillad" the offense in '04 after Maddox went down, the Steelers went on to go 15-1. Arguably they could have gone 16-0 had Ben played since the beginning since Maddox played like crap in the Baltimore game.

In re: Quinn starting the first half of this season:

I'd have to say that unless Frye or Anderson were doing a terrible job, then Quinn should be in the bench.

It's NOT ABOUT SETTLING FOR MEDIOCRITY, but it's about being PATIENT and building this team the RIGHT WAY. I think the risk of loss is much lower by letting him sit and learn for a little bit before he takes the reigns.

JMHO.

Quinn is the result of the Browns not being able or willing to go out and get a FA QB. They passed on Brees and Culpepper, and Green did not want to play for the Browns. In reality those were the only 3 viable options for a legitimate NFL QB.

Now the QB position is loaded with potential. Potential and $1.75 gets you a cup of coffee. Frye and Anderson did not show enough to make the Browns comfortable with the situation.

Given the circumstances, moving up and drafting Quinn was the right move for the Browns. Quinn has everything that teams look for in a college QB. Most important is that he played a lot.

At some point in time, one of the three will emerge and the others will be traded or become a backup.

I believe that the real key to the future of the Browns is the improved OL. That was the problem with the Browns last year, far more than the play of the QB's. A team cannot give up 50+ sacks and be a winner. Nor can a team average less than 3.5 ypc and be a winner.

Savage stated last year that he wanted to build the team around Frye, and not have to rely soley on Frye to be the difference maker. That never happened, and although it has not been mentioned this year, I believe that it is still the mode of operation for the Browns.

Mensa is by far the MOST knowledgable guy on the board.

He understands that in order to gauge a QB then he has to have an Oline and a running game. He backs up his points with statistics--not lame lines like "I saw with my own 2 eyes" or "stats are for losers." Yea, so he actually makes an argument AND can back it up with actual numbers. A concept few people on the board actually grasp.

Thanks Pit,, that explains a lot.... I'm still not sure we didn't get taken but at least I'm convinced at this point that we don't know one way or the other..

I was watching Cleveland Rants last night.. Les Levine and Kendall Lewis are hosts of that show. They discussed the contract but like you, they didn't have enough detail to comment with any accuracy.

But Levine made a comment that didn't seem to make sense. He said that the total money that Quinn got matches up to money normally gotten by the 18th or 19th pick in the draft.

I'm not saying he's right but if he is, then I'm mistaken about the Browns being taken by Condon.

Again, thanks

We will only hear about the closers details that sealed the deal. The hard work should have started sooner. Think this is at all the agent's fault? I do. I really think draft should be moved up so less camp is missed. This hurts some merchandising and NFL sales.
Do believe in a ridiculous game it is hard to see this as a "bargain", but you know, I like the elevator clauses where you need to achieve something to earn something. Need to be more incentives and less guaranteed money bloat.
Meanwhile, go Browns! And may the Elf be with you!

NOT CLICKING ON ANYONE.....

I have trouble getting over the fact that some want to make Brady Quinn's contract, their business.

DID THE BROWNS GET TAKEN....I read....hmmm....IF it was anyone's business...

1. Are the Browns in trouble financially?

2. Is Randy Lerner going broke?

3. Where do the Browns rank in cap space?

4. Where was Quinn ranked on the Browns draft board?

5. If Quinn leads the Browns to the playoffs and an eventual a Super Bowl
win, will he be worth the contract some believe is their business.

It's only fair that those claiming that the contract was unfair, answer the questions above.

My take is simple, the player hires an agent to negotiate with the teams professional negotiators and they hammer out a contract based on the questions above along with other issues.

If you don't like the process of negotiating rookie contracts, don't attack the player or those who negotiated the contract. It is fair to attack the system that allows players and the NFL to "negotiate" contracts under the present system.

The "system" is the real problem if your looking for someone to blame. If the NFL wants to change the system of rookie contracts to say a "slotting" system, then it's up to the NFL to address that issue when the present NFL contract runs out, with the players union.

Is this issue of rookie contracts worth a "strike"?

"IF", the owners are really that unhappy with the present negotiating process, will they give up enough in negotiations to put in place a slotting system?

I support Brady Quinn all the way as he followed the present process and is now in camp, ready to do his best to help the Browns to a Super Bowl or two.

Go Browns...WOOF....macbulldawg

i agree with you on ONE thing, MAC...

if our cap can bear this contract without burdening the team down the road, i could care less what the precise #'s are...

do you care what the executives of your company make as long as they improve the company and noone has to be let go in order to pay them?...

Silly sticking points; good case for rookie caps etc. Is it OK to make em do domething before the obscene cash comes flooding down? I will be behind him, kicking him in da buttsky for taking so long. Our FO could have helped a bit, but that is not their job in ths biz. We can take turns: You kick him a while, my leg is tired. Hope they saved some of that fine Berea humidity (and humility) for him. So his "dream" has come true; now do mine! Takeover after bye week?

Yes, please! waddling and bouncing and attempts to break aaforementioned bench are encouraged. I would make the Golden Domer buy his own clipboard to carry. But he should be (gasp) behind Dorsey?

General Reply: PRESS CONFERENCE

To anyone who saw it...I knew the Cleveland media was iffy at best, but they basically made the press conference a gigantic waste of time and tried to kill the morale of this kid before he even takes a snap in training camp today.

I'm pretty sure it was Mary Kay who asked "The average income in Cleveland is $26,000, how do you think the fans feel about you holding out for millions of dollars?"

Someone else: "Do you think the fans view you as spoiled?"

WHAT THE HECK?????? I don't even remember some of these questions for Edwards and Winslow!!!! While they were asked some questions like that, it wasn't nearly of this magnitude. What about Joe Thomas getting more than double what Quinn got in guarantees? Does that make him spoiled, or does the fact that he got in on time and went fishing on draft day negate that?

I'm not expecting softball questions, but I'm expecting maybe one or two questions about the holdout and the rest about football. I loved hearing about him taking every page of the playbook that he could from OTA's and minicamp and watching the cutups of OTA's, minicamp, and training camp. Why? He's not nearly as far behind as many think. While he certainly has a lot of catching up to do, it's not like he's starting completely from scratch here.

I gotta tell ya, damn good thing I wasn't being asked those questions cuz I would have likely turned the question around on them as well. Ask Mary Kay how much she makes and such and if she feels guilty about making more than the median income.

Way to greet him with torches and pitchforks Some of it is most certainly deserved, but not on this kind of level. Take it from someone who's pretty close to his age. I'm two years younger and couldn't have answered those questions with half the poise he has, and I'm pretty smart and mature compared to other guys my age.

I think they made a "wise, calculated decision" that rather to sign a veteran with possibly three to five years left in their career, some of those possibly on the downside, they decided to give their best effort to get our "long term QB of the future." If Quinn could NOT have been gotten this year, the QB position would have been on the "top of the list" next year. Aquiring him this year, simply puts us one season ahead of the curve. Plus, even with this contract,we are $$$ ahead of picking possibly the second QB selected next year in the top 10.

Quote:

No doubt about that. And the evidence speaks volumes to expound that point. But one thing you must remember,IF JT and BQ live up to their potential, you can buy millions of cups of coffee on the results they'll accomplish.

These were the circumstances this FO was hoping for. The best possible scenario. Your LT and QB maturing and growing together for a possible future dynasty. A FA QB would only have stalled the true process that must have been put in place by drafting a true franchise QB later. They decided "band-aid time" was over. Thank God.

Quote:

At some point in time, one of the three will emerge and the others will be traded or become a backup.

I'm willing to wager based on talent, skill set and confidence which one that will be.

While everything you say carries a lot of merrit,if you have no legitimate threat to burn teams with your QB downfield with a passing attack, running the ball is a far more difficult task.

It is a "team sport" but they don't call them "skill positions" for nothing. And without those players in those positions having the proper "skills" your odds of ever "winning SB's" is greatly diminished.

dna...I'll pick up your comment above...

Are the fans worried about how big the Browns staff is and the size of their contracts?

Front office contracts come out of Lerner's pocket too.

Or, are some of you just following the lead of the local media who are doing their best to create an issue to build subscribers?

THE MEDIA HAS AN AGENDA AND IT'S NOT TO PROMOTE THE BROWNS!

The Browns used to have a media that supported the Browns...but now, the media has an agenda driven by their own greed.

As a fan of the Browns since the early 60s and I have seen the change in "support" from the fans and media.

I refuse to allow the media to lead me because supporting the Browns is not their primary agenda.

Money, viewers, listeners...that is the agenda of the media....supporting the Browns is somewhere down the list.

The Browns are at the top of my list....GO BROWNS...WOOF...mac

The great thing about this is that for the first time since our return we have a QB loaded with potential on a team that he can actually succeed with.

What an awesome time to be a Browns fan!!

Ok, I've been watching this thread and am getting somewhat confused re: BQ's contract.

We can all agree that it's 5 years, 20.2 million...ESPN tells us so and we all know that TV would never lie to us

There's also mention that BQ could make up to 30 million depending on incentives being hit.

However, I've also seen some rumblings that the reported contract is inflated and that BQ's base money is completely in line with where he was picked.

What I see is 5 years, 20 million = an average of $4 mil per year base salary. Obviously, this is a number that starts lower and goes higher...but nonetheless.

This is money that we WILL pay BQ over 5 years so long as he is on the team for 5 years, correct? If we cut him or he is injured before that, he gets 7.75 mil and a thank you card.

Am I right so far? If someone has more info on if there are conditions on the 20 mil, I'd be interested to know.

Assuming I am, I don;t see how anyone can't say that we overpaid...and significantly at that. I'm not saying I'm overly upset about it as we have the cap room and are set up well for the next few years...but I would bet that other teams probably aren't overly pleased with us...especially the Raiders. JaMarcus has to be looking at that contract and thinking how much 21 spots adds up to...
