If those are ranked by strength, i agree with one of them for us ... he’s got us low in most groupings ...

3rd or 4th in almost every group (all but secondary, where I think he has us overrated) - not seeing how that equates to closing the talent gap. That's where we've been for years.

How does a league celebrating its 100th season only recognize the 53 most recent championships?

The important one: Quarterbacks. He has us listed last, and I actually could make a case that we're 2nd.

Taylor might end up being a better option than Flacco or Dalton.

Also, I'd actually take our RBs and WRs over Baltimore and Cincinnati now too.

That's a big difference.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

If the Browns coaching doesn't improve, this won't matter. The Browns will continue to lose, and losing will result in the Browns' talent being rated lower than otherwise.

Evidence... Still hard to say any AFC North gap is closing if you lose 12 in a row vs. the division, so, Evidence?

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

The biggest challenge still facing this team imo is their youth. Give them time to gel and develop and by season's end I would not be surprised to see any one of these individual units increase their rank relative to the division by 1-2 spots. I see a much improved roster overall.

I would rank our secondary 4th at this point in time, and I would rank the Bengals secondary ahead of the Steelers, though I consider it close.

And it is within Tyrod's capability to outplay Flacco/Dalton. We'll see if he can.

One thing I've noticed for many years on these boards is a pattern I've never understood. Fans act as though we make moves and have a draft while every other team stands still. That we "close the gap" and other teams just stand still and let it happen.

I think we all need to keep in mind that as we improve, they improve.

Another thing to keep in mind. On paper it may not look as though some teams have improved that much. But let's be real here. When a team has consistency in coaching and scheme, they can bring players along and develop them in their system. Many of them have players waiting in the wings to step in and take over.

That's not what we're looking at here.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Some folks think all teams improve every year ... rofl ...

I agree with U ON the secondary as of today ... but IMO we could very easily end up #2 when the seasons over ..

Pitt’s and Cinci’s are HORRIBLE ... ours was somehow worse than theirs last year .. but neither of there secondaries were even close to average ...

Thing is .. both those teams improved theres ... but NO WHERES NEAR AS MUCH AS WE DID ...

At QB ... i’d take Dalton or Flacco over TT all day long ... thing is ... they didn’t improve much if at all at that position ... TT IS A HUGE ASS UPGRADE FOR US compared to last year ... we we IMPROVED IMMENSLY where as they improved very very incrementally if at all ...

For this discussion its a valid point ... but to year over year improvement ...

We win that competition just based off our upgrade at that position alone ...

SOME FOLKS HAVE A REAL HARD TIME WITH 0 + 0 = 0 ...

We have "improved" by getting rid of some of our glaring disappointments. Lose your weaknesses, at least on paper you are "stronger" and do improve. So how many wins or how many losses stagger this ranking? Is it these individuals only for a team record? I think we may be better in ranking; so if we win some, Browns move up? Because some of the other three teams are not as strong as they have been. Even great ones lose a step. Entropy rules.

My hat is off for the work. Hope we are better. Wins are proof.

I agree on the possibility of our secondary not being last at season end, but the Bengals/Steelers also have reasons to be optimistic about improvement. I can’t put us ahead of them until I see how the new additions play. I also need to know if Peppers is going to stand 25 yards off the ball every game. Lots of potential, we’ll see what we do with it.

Last thought of yours.

We're going to be up against that in the next 2-4 years. It's CRITICAL that we continue to draft well so we DO have that NEXT guy waiting. Being developed.

Something I think MANY don't get is that we're going to start having ALOT of guys up for 2nd contracts in 2 years. ALOT.

And we ain't signing EVERY single one. Need someone in waiting. I've noticed MAC ain't around lately. He'll pop up when we don't keep our own and let Johnson walk because we won't give him what he wants.

And if Mayfield is the chit. We're looking at a HUGE contract going forward. Thank You Jesus!!!!!!! Finally.

We MUST continue to draft well.

Talent wise we are right there at the top of the division.

Unfortunately, talent doesn't always translate to the field:
Gordon's suspensions, Manziel's drug issues/bi-polar, Gilbert's work ethic, Coleman's hand injuries. Etc
Remember that year we had something like 15 hamstring injuries in camp?
How about the year of Staph infections?
LOL, thinking back on past Browns seasons always makes me laugh, just a comedy of errors more than untalented players.

We're loaded with POTENTIAL, but I think this, like all those cowardly "power rankings" you see, are just based on PAST PERFORMANCE. Then mid-season if we're doing well all of a sudden people will jump on the bandwagon.

Garrett, Mayfield, Ward, Njoku, Gordon, Coleman, Corbett, Peppers etc are all BIG MAYBES. If injuries or coaching sinks us like previous years, they will blame talent again, but in actuality this team is VERY TALENTED. Sashi tore us down and Dorsey set us up great. Let's just hope it turns out for a change instead of some weird fluke ruining a season.

I would say that Pittsburgh's offense is by far the most talented unit in the AFCN. On paper, they should win the division very easily.

Baltimore's talent is down IMO, and Cincy's QB play has affected them too much.

We've closed the gap because of HOW BAD we were last year, but I'm still not sure we're as good as the others.

The vast majority of posters on this board claim they don't watch other teams, yet somehow, they can evaluate the talent on those said teams. Perplexing.

Good job Kwip, I agree with most of it. I think RB should be rated a little higher and I think our QB rating will rise as the season goes along.

I'm highly optimistic for a much improved and competitive team. We've got more talent or stability most everywhere except LT.

With that said I'm not making any predictions - they have to show me that they have changed a history of ineptitude. Hope it happens.

I think right now 3 of the 4 AFC North teams can be potential playoff teams
the Steelers Browns Bengals.
the Steelers are the favorite of course.
at some point you have to make Ben hit the ground and get him off the field
i wonder if the Steelers offense struggles without Haley?

the Ravens just dont impress me. Flacco is trending down and that defense is good but not great.who are the WRs......oh yeah other teams 3rd WRs. they are so good the Bengals knocked them out of a,playoff spot last year

the Bengals will go as far as those young kids develop i.e Lawson Mixon Ross and and how fast a rebuild oline will gel. Dalton isnt the issue. he had no help last year

the Browns added the most talent in the off season but they had no choice
if Haley can get everyone to learn the playbook the Browns will be in every game
can the Browns make a idenity on offense for the time since the return?

I am not saying that you are wrong and I won't call you a liar or say you are full of crap, but I disagree w/you a bit.

I agree we were horrific at QB, but I think our WRs were atrocious. I think our TEs were poor blockers, inconsistent route runners, and dropped too many passes.

I think our secondary was horrendous. I think our safeties were as poor as any in the league in pass defense and our corners were barely any better. I think our LBers were forced to cover too much and didn't really do a good job, especially Collins.

I also think for as much as they were pimped, our DL did not generate enough pressure.

I think the personnel on our special teams were horrific.

And I haven't even mentioned our lack of experience and how it hurt us in the red zone and at the end of games. And I believe losing so many games [yes, it was planned] has a devastating effect on a football team.

I'm not calling you out or making fun of you. I am not telling you to not express your opinion. I am simply offering my opinion on the team.

I think we were pretty awful at CB and FS last year. We could not turn the ball over on defense at all. If we weren't last in creating turnovers, we had to have been pretty close.

WR was not a position of any strength either. Our top 2 WRs, in terms of receptions, were Higgins and Louis. (with 27 catches each) Ugh.

Gonzalez had issues as the PK, and cost us at least 2 games.

We were poor at returning punts.

I also think that our depth was an issue when injuries hit.

I'm not calling you out or making fun of you. I am not telling you to not express your opinion. I am simply offering my opinion on the team.

No sense breaking it down ... i agree with pretty much everything u said ....

My point is our TALENT was better than an 0 - 16 team ... we had much more talent last year IMO than the Lions team that went undefeated ....

We have TALENT to work with ... and last year IMO if we had TT as QB and i am no fan of his we would have won 4 games + just by eliminating the turnovers in the other teams territory ...

RED ZONE KILLED US but so did all the TO’s where the LOS was between there 21 - 40 ...

We not only didnt get TD’s ... we DIDN’T EVEN GET 3 ....

If we had any other QB in the league last year do u think we would have won 2 or 3 games or went winless? ...

We didn’t have playoff caliber talent ... not saying that ...

But i also don’t believe we had ZERO WIN talent if our QB didn’t put in possibly the single worst QB performance in a year ... it was like his last year at ND ... he didn’t keep the job cause of what he did ... he kept it cause there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING behind him ...

Do u think we had zero win talent last year? ...

No, I think we could have won 3 or 4 games if we had a better qb and more experience. Hell, if we had traded for Jimmy G, we might have won 6 or so.

We agree then ... thats all i was saying ... can u think of another qb that played as bad as he did that started so many games? ... it has to have been an historically bad year for a QB especially in the red zone ...

if we had JG we may have won the division with what he did in Frisco .. *L* ...

Thats one of the teams that IMO we had as much or slightly less talent than ...

If the Browns coaching doesn't improve, this won't matter.

This is as close anyone comes on this thread.

Hue Jackson is the proven worst coach in the NFL.

Haslams are the proven worst owners in the NFL.

The Cleveland Browns have been the undisputed worst team in the NFL both the last two years and the last 20 years.

The only constant over the last 20 years are the fans.

Twenty years includes 2 years in which the Browns did not exist .. then there was a playoff year as well as a 10 - 6 year .. so 20 years is overstating a bit.

If the goal of the front office was not to tear the team down, and build through the draft ( I won't say rebuild because the record was already so bad that rebuild is a misnomer ), with the expressed goal of building from scratch, I may agree with the Haslam and Jackson comments.

However, I feel that no one in the league, and that includes Belicheck, could have won much with the Browns, given what was left to work with. Jackson and the Haslam's are not proven to be the worst, unless it can be stated that all clubs were equal in talent and experience in the past 2 seasons.

lol. Love this post. So salty. But so true.

Honestly, i'm usually so pissed off after Browns games, that NFL finishes for me by 15 or 16:00 every Sunday (depending on what time zone i'm in). I know the other teams in our division based on the playoffs and how we play against them in our two meetings of the reg season.

Other than that, can't really make much of an opinion.

I do agree with your post though Vers. That and the other said by the guy who made the point that so often we look at other teams and figure as we work to improve, they stay the same. Every season is different. There's certainly patterns, like the Steeler's successful passing game lately. But things change all the time. Guys get hurt and guys have up/down years

Without the massive number of turnovers, and with the kicker making gimme kicks, maybe we win 3-6 games. However, we had some really poor position groups.

Hopefully we have upgraded them this off-season. We'll see. I am far more optimistic this tear than the last 4 or 5 years.

I agree bro ... our WR/TE group and our entire secondary group were at or really really close to the bottom of the league ...

My point is we were not a team with zero win talent on it sans QB ... as bad as those two groups were our QB play was historically bad ...

I mean ... think about this for a second and just how bad our QB play has been over the last 20 years ... ...

Last years QB play was even bad for our standards ... thumbsdown

no doubt. our QB play was literally at its worst ever last year (which is incredible).

I'll also say our offensive skill guys were the worst we've ever had as well.

That's a bad combo in today's NFL.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Clicked on Petey by mistake ... ooooops ....

This was a reply to Y-Town’s post ....

And bro ... u said hopefully we improved ....

Flash/Jarvis vs Britt/Coleman ...

We went from one of the worst to one of if not the best 1/2 punches in the league ...

One CB position has taken a MAJOR UPGRDE going from McCourty to Ward ... the other slot has made an upgrade also, not near as significant as that one but an upgrade .... We have a new FS and possibly a new starter at SS ... all the sub packages have also improved ...

QB ... we went from historically bad to competent ... we went from a TO machine to THE PROTECTER ....

thumbsup

We've closed the gap because of HOW BAD we were last year, but I'm still not sure we're as good as the others.

We weren’t that bad last year at any position other than QB ...

Why is that so hard for some to understand? ...

I don’t get it ... i really don’t ...

And you thought it would be easy to be a positive poster...lol laugh

We are not allowed to speculate in a positive fashion - UNTIL we win I guess. Then it will be ok...

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.
