Tribe adds Oliver Perez to bullpen mix

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Indians' search for stability in their bullpen continued on Saturday, when the team signed veteran lefty Oliver Perez to a Major League contract.

In order to add Perez to the active and 40-man roster, Cleveland designated lefty Jeff Beliveau for assignment. Perez will become the 15th reliever used this season by the Indians, who headed into Saturday with an MLB-high 6.01 bullpen ERA. The Tribe relief corps posted an 8.01 ERA in May, marking the highest bullpen ERA in any month in franchise history (min. 40 innings

Match up lefty? Maybe so; LH hitters hit .213 against him over the last 3 years, righties hit .288. I assume he's a hard thrower, since he has 9.45 K/9 (strikeouts per 9 innings), but also seems to walk more hitters than you'd like (K/BB ratio is 1.95), which would explain the high career WHIP of 1.46.

Better find bullpen help ASAP.
Send Allen down. Can't bunt and always looks bewildered at the plate. Plutko and Bieber can step in when they can't afford Kluber or Carlos anymore.

Hurray for Cody Allen...

Okay, so when they had the pre-series meetings about how to pitch Twins hitters, WHATEVER the BLEEP they said about pitching to Rosario - THROW IT AWAY! Frigging guy wore us out this weekend. Jeez, that's annoying - just put one on his rib cage next time, at least you're only giving up one base when you do that, not the whole game.

Hum. Plutko is scheduled to start again next week for the Tribe (June 12th).

I wonder if after his taste of the bigs the minors are ""too easy".

MLB draft night: Cleveland Indians excited to have four of the first 67 picks Monday night | cleveland.com
https://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2018/06/draft_night_cleveland_indians.html#incart_m-rpt-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If you can steer your way past the inferno that is the Indians' bullpen for a moment, it's time for MLB's draft. It starts at 7 p.m. Monday on MLB Network and the Indians are going to be busy.

They'll make four choices tonight with the 29th, 35th, 41st and 67th picks. They'll pick 29th in the first round after winning 102 games in the regular season last year. The 35th pick comes their way as compensation for losing free agent Carlos Santana to the Phillies after last year. They received the 41st pick from the Competitive Balance Round A and the 67th pick is their second-round choice.

Last year the Indians did not have a first round pick. They lost it as compensation for signing free agent Edwin Encarnacion to a three-year $60 million deal.

They had two selections in the second round and drafted high school outfielder Quentin Holmes and high school shortstop Tyler Freeman. Holmes received a $988,870 signing bonus. The Indians signed Freeman for $816,500.

Holmes and Freeman started this season in extended spring training.

This will be the first draft orchestrated by Scott Barnsby, who replaced Brad Grant as director of amateur scouting in the offseason. Grant held the position for 10 years and helped revitalize the farm system. Barnsby, in his 19th year with the Indians, served as Grant' assistant scouting director for the last three years.

"You guys know how we operate," said Barnsby, when asked if he was feeling pressure in his new position. "One, I'm fortunate to be with the organization for a long time. The same group of people are in place starting with Chris Antonetti (president of baseball operations), Mike Chernoff, (general manager), Matt Foreman (assistant general manager) and Carter Hawkins (assistant general manager).

"The support system is really helpful. Brad, who did a great job for 10 years, the longest tenured scouting direction in the history of the Indians, hasn't gone very far. He's still sitting right there. He's still in our meetings.

"For me it always has been about making sure we lead a really effective scouting process and make sure that there's nothing overlooked with the players and that we make a decision as a group."

Barnsby said there is a challenge picking 29th in the first round, but there is also excitement because the Indians have four picks in the first two rounds after not having a first round pick last year.

"This draft isn't different in terms of preparation, but it's different because it's more exciting to think about how many picks we have - 29, 35, 41, 67."

As for the challenge of picking so low in the first round, Barnsby said, "It's a good thing. It means our major league team is doing well. But it's so unpredictable just to know who is going to be there at 29.

"There are so many variables that it is challenging so we prepare the best we can. The draft is fluid and that's why we're hoping we're so prepared that as we get closer to 29 we'll have a pretty good idea who we're getting and hopefully make a real good decision on draft day."

The first five picks in the draft belong to Detroit, San Francisco, Philadelphia, the White Sox and Cincinnati. The Tigers and Giants had the same record last season (64-98), but the Tigers will draft first because they had the lower winning percentage in 2016.

Detroit, according to mlb.com, is considering three players for the first pick - college right-handers Casey Mize from Auburn or Florida's Brady Singer. George Tech catcher Joey Bart is also reportedly on their short list.

Over the last seven years, the Indians have had seven first round picks, including two in 2014. They've taken high school players with five of those picks including Francisco Lindor in 2011, Clint Frazier in 2013, Justus Sheffield in 2014, Brady Aiken in 2015 and Will Benson in 2016.

Barnsby says the 2018 draft is deep in college and high school talent.

"The way we're set up is to be successful no matter if we draft a college or high school player," he said. "Whoever ends up being there, as long as we know everything about them, and can help develop them, that's all that matters. We're not really focused on one or the other right now."

The Indians have a signing bonus pool of $9,145,200 million. That's what they have to spend on the first 10 rounds of the draft. If they exceed that, they can be penalized.

Here are the slot prices for their first four picks: 29th $2,332,700; 35th $2,016,400; 41st $1,744,800 and 67th $939,700. Teams can pay the players taken in the first 10 rounds above or below their slot value as long as the total doesn't exceed their bonus pool.

The draft lasts 40 rounds. Any players drafted after the 10th round who are signed for more than $125,000 will count against that team's bonus pool. The Royals, Rays and Tigers have the largest bonus pools at $12,781,900, $12,416,600 and $12,414,800, respectively.

I know the draft is a big deal and where you build up your farm system and ultimately your team.. but it's really hard to get excited about drafting players you probably won't see for at least 2 or 3 years... most of them you will never see...

They are also assets for trades.

We used some of our draft picks to trade for Andrew Miller. (Shefielf, Frazier) They can be very important, even if they never play on our Major league team.

The Tigers, Giants, Phillies, White Sox and Reds own the first five picks in the first round. The Indians have the 29th pick in the first round.

Noah Naylor, Indians first round pick (29th overall)

The Indians selected high school catcher Noah Naylor on Monday night with the 29th pick in the first round. Naylor, 18, attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Mississauga, Ontario.

Naylor, a left-handed hitter, played with Toronto's 18 and under national team, the Ontario Blue Jays, this spring. His brother Josh was a No.1 pick of the Marlins in 2015 and is now one of San Diego's top prospects.

Besides playing on Toronto's 18 and under team, he toured spring training with the Candian Junior National team and got to face big-league pitchers from the Red Sox and Blue Jays.

At the All-Star Game last year at Marlins Park in Miami, he participated in the high school home run derby. He is committed to play college at Texas A&M.

Naylor's slot value is $2,3332,700.

RHP Ethan Hankins, Indians second pick (35th overall)

The Indians selected right-hander Ethan Hankins with their second pick in Monday's amateur draft. They selected Hankins with the 35th pick overall.

The Tribe acquired the 35th pick as compensation for losing catcher Carlos Santana to the Phillies last winter.

Hankins, 6-6 and 215 pounds, throws between 93 mph and 96 mph. He injured his shoulder in February, but seemed to throw better as the draft neared. He's topped out at 97 mph to 98 mph.
He's committed to Vanderbilt University. The slot value for Hankins is $2,016,400.

Hankins helped USA Baseball's 18 and under team win the gold medal in the World Cup last fall. He went 1-0 with an 0.75 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 12 innings. Against Korea, he struck out 14 batters in six innings against Korea.

RHP Lenny Torres, Indians third pick (41st overall)

The Indians, with the 41st pick overall, selected high school right-hander Lenny Torres. The 17-year-old Torres goes to Beacon High School in Beacon, N.Y. and is committed to playing college baseball at St. John's.

The 41st pick came to the Indians as part of the Competitive Balance Round A phase of the draft.
Torres posted a 0.68 ERA (3ER/41.0IP) during his senior year. He struck out 85 batters. The 6-2, 185-pound converted shortstop pitched well last summer in several showcase events last summer for Perfect Game.

The slot value for Torres is $1,744,800.

Torres throws between 94 mph and 96 mph.

RHP Nick Sandlin, Indians fourth pick (67th overall)

The Indians, with the 67th pick overall in Monday's draft, selected right-hander Nick Sandlin from Southern Mississippi. Sandlin is 5-11 and 170 pounds. His slot value is $939,700.

Sandlin moved from the bullpen to the rotation this year and his numbers popped. He went 10-0 with a 1.06 ERA. He struck out 144 batters in 102 1/3 innings for Southern Mississippi.

Scott Barnsby, Indians director of scouting, said the Indians will probably look at him as a reliever.

Scott Barnsby, Indians director of scouting, on challenge of have 29th pick in the first round
Scott Barnsby, in his first year conducting the Indians draft, is excited about having four picks in the first two rounds of the draft. Barnsby is in his 19th year with the Indians. For the last three years he was Brad Grant's assistant in the scouting department.

Two things stand out in tonight's game. Jose Ramirez IS the VERY model of a ballplayer and Joe Thomas could very well be the mayor, king or Grand Master of Cleveland should he ever choose.

I'll take JT as the mayor!

Kluber is quietly putting together a very strong Cy Young first half of 2018.

We are getting to enjoy a Hall-of-Fame pitcher for the Indians at the peak of his career.

Indians beat the current best team in the NL, the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1 today, winning the season series 3-1. Carrasco pitched 7 innings, 1 ER, 10 K's. Cody Allen gets Save #11. Indians are up by 4 games in the AL Central at the moment, pending the outcome of Detroit @ Boston and Chisox @ Minnesota.

Great win today!

This bullpen reminds one of a dumpster fire at times, but I love a win. Cavs win would make it a good day.

Bauer could be a good pitcher some day if he improves in two categories:

1) Unearned Runs Allowed (way too many),
2) Inherited runners allowed to score by relief pitcher.

Otherwise he's doing O.K.

Thanx rockyhilldawg! JUST like that. If we ever manage to put bats AND pitchers out there at same time, just wow! Wahoo!

My wife asked me this morning if the Tribe was doing well because our local newspaper in Springfield refuses to covert them because the Reds live in Dayton apparently.

Wasn't certain how to respond.

Wahoo! Go Tribe!

I wasn't impressed when Tito picked-up Melky Cabrera.

And I'm still not.

But he does have a .285 life-time average. And he has a pretty low strike-out ratio. (12%) (about 3 SO per 25 plate appearances)

I guess the question is, "Is there any gas left in the tank?".

Melky had 3 RBIs today on two Sac Flies, a single, and a double. Kluber goes to 10-2, well on his way to his 3rd CYA. Indians win 9-2. Our lead in the AL Central is back to 5 games.

Corey Kluber:
-1.99 ERA this season
-168 consecutive batters faced without issuing a walk
-26 consecutive starts allowing 3 ER or fewer
-Allowed two runs in eight innings today and his ERA went *up*
