We now have a crazy amount of depth at linebacker. I wonder if another move is in store. If not, I have to imagine Jamie Collins will be used a ton as a pass rusher this year.

Also, PFF had Kendricks rated higher than any of our other linebackers when used in coverage.

Is that what it's like to have depth?

It's certainly trending that way.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Clear pass rush situations:

Garrett and Collins outside, Ogunjobi and Ogbah inside, Kendricks and Kirksey at linebacker?

OR

Garrett and Ogbah outside, Ogunjobi inside, Kendricks and Peppers at linebacker?

OR

... ...

You get the point. I don't ever remember having this much depth at a position.

Free-agent LB Mychal Kendricks, in a brief phone interview, denied a report he's reached agreement to sign with the Browns. "No, it's not accurate. That's all I have to say. I'm not really talking about it.'' Kendricks wouldn't comment on whether the #Vikings are still in the mix

Kendricks is a quality LB. Improved depth is always a good thing.

I don't know if the Steelers have the cap space to sign him.

IF we end up with him .. me thinks he starts over Shobert ... Shobert is way overrated by many around here ...

Not arguing it improves our depth ... it definetly is a HUGE UPGRADE there ... but i think he could very well start over Shobert ...

Perhaps the deal is more done than he knows. II mean, jeez, it's I an the R for pity's sake! Gotta be true. Get him signed, because I believe he is solid and can help us. That may be purely wishful thinking, but stronger LB play is always wanted. Be strong up the middle.

I know Kendricks disputed the initial report.

Browns are signing LB Mychal Kendricks to a 1-year deal

By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns are signing another outside linebacker with a Super Bowl ring in Mychal Kendricks, the former Eagles starter.

He's close to agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with the Browns and is expected to sign it tomorrow, a league source confirmed for cleveland.com.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the imminent deal.

But after the reports surfaced, Kendricks shot them down. His agent, Doug Hendrickson, however, told Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz that although no agreement has been reached, the Browns are the favorites.

Mychal Kendricks disputes a report that he's signing with the Browns

Kendricks visited the Browns on Friday after visiting the Vikings on Monday and Tuesday, and then the Raiders. His brother, Eric, plays middle linebacker for the Vikings, and Kendricks told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that it would be a dream come true to play with him.

Instead, he'll go from the Super Bowl champion Eagles to the Browns, who are coming off an 0-16 season.

In Cleveland, Kendricks will compete for a starting outside linebacker job with Christian Kirksey and Jamie Collins, or rotate in with the two.

Collins, who will be 29 in October, is coming off a surgically-repaired torn MCL and is due to make $10.9 million this season. He returned to OTAs on a limited basis for the first time last week, and will also likely be limited in the mandatory minicamp June 12-14.

Rated the ninth-best linebacker by profootballfocus.com, Kendricks was released by the Eagles after six seasons there and with two years left on his contract.
He played 60 percent of the Eagles' snaps last season after just 27 percent the year before. He plays outside in a 4-3 alignment and inside in a 3-4.

"I kind of understood the situation,'' he told the Pioneer Press. "It's something that I've been asking for. ... I didn't ask to be released but I asked for a trade a year prior to this. So, yeah, I'm trying to be in a situation where I can play a big role and really contribute.''

In Cleveland, Kendricks would add depth a linebacking corps that includes Collins, 2017 Pro Bowler Joe Schobert, Kirksey and James Burgess.

"If there is a player that we are bringing in here, we feel like he can help our football team be better," Jackson said last week at OTAs. "We're not going to turn down good football players. If we can get any more football players that are good and can help our football team, we're going to do it, I'm sure."

Kendricks (6-0, 240 pounds), who underwent a cleanup on his ankle in March, was released by the Eagles on May 22, the first day of OTAs.

The move came a year after he asked to be traded because of minimal playing time in 2016 under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Kendricks, who was due to make $5.85 million this season and count $7.6 million against the Eagles cap, told former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho, now with ESPN, that he refused to take a $4.5 million paycut to remain with the Eagles.

The writing was on the wall for Kendricks in Philly when the Eagles signed former Broncos linebacker Corey Nelson to a one-year deal at the start of free agency. Nelson told philly.com that the Eagles told he'd compete for the starting weakside 'backer sport, where Kendricks started 13 games in 2017.

Kendricks, a second-round pick in 2012 out of Cal, finished second on the Eagles with 77 tackles last season, and added two sacks. However, he failed to force a turnover in the past two seasons.

Kendricks could also be an insurance policy against Collins, the strongside 'backer who missed 10 games last seasons, three with a concussion and seven with the torn MCL.

Collins, signed to a four-year extension by Sashi Brown in January of 2017 worth $50 million, is the highest paid 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL at an average of $12.5 million a year, according to overthecap.com.

Kirksey, the Browns starting weakside 'backer, was signed to a four-year extension by Brown worth $38 million in May of 2017. That makes him the fifth-highest paid 4-3 outside 'backer in the league at $9.5 million a year.

How so?

Not only did Shobert make the Pro Bowl last year BUT he was also tied for 1st in the NFL in tackles at 144

know what that tells me?

It tells me Shobert has a natural nose for the ball and is ALWAYS around the ball no matter where it is on the field...been a few good LB in the AFc North with that instinct....Ray Lewis, Clay Matthews, David Little, Levon Kirkland to name a few.

Shobert is the best defender on the team right now, the only guy we got with a Pro Berth behind him at a position of stiff competition.

I mean seriously...we got a Pro Bowl guy here considered by players and coaches in the NFL to be top 5 at his position and was voted as such, yet we want to replace him with this bum that outside of winning Sb on a good team is actually a downgrade to Shobert?

If Shobert played for the Eagles instead of the Browns last year, Kendricks wouldn't have even seen the field...Shobert is better then him period and proved it last year. Nuff said.

Mychal Kendricks would be a nice addition to the team, if it doesn't work out, because somebody pissed him off then it would be another unfortunate event; but at least the team is going after this good player.

LB Mychal Kendricks agrees to 1-year deal with Browns, source says

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/23689...leveland-browns

ESPN.com

Free-agent linebacker Mychal Kendricks has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns worth up to $3.5 million, a source confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal was first reported by Yahoo! Sports.

The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles had released Kendricks on May 22, just hours before they lost newly signed linebacker Paul Worrilow to a torn

Kendricks' release by the Eagles was not unexpected, as he was scheduled to make $7.6 million this season.

With his playing time dwindling, Kendricks, 27, had asked to be dealt or released last offseason. The Eagles opted to hang on to him, and he ended up making valuable contributions during the team's championship run, finishing with 51 tackles and a pair of sacks. His role increased when fellow linebacker Jordan Hicks was lost to an Achilles rupture in October.

He played 60 percent of the defensive snaps overall.

The athletically gifted Kendricks, 27, has had an up-and-down career since being selected in the second round by Philadelphia in 2012. He posted 86 tackles, four sacks, four fumble recoveries and three interceptions in his second season, but he hasn't been able to reach those same statistical heights in the years since as his playing time gradually declined.

Information from ESPN's Tim McManus was used in this report.

I was somewhat hesitant about adding Kendricks at the start of last week. Mainly because I was foolishly concerned about how it would affect the rest of the LB unit. But this is a really good get. It's a no-brainer to add talent when the opportunity presents itself.

Question. Does this finally debunk the notion that top tier veteran free agents don't want to come to Cleveland? Dude comes off a Super Bowl winning squad and he had choices, still he chose the Browns.

I'd agree, but I'd also say we probably offered a lot more $$ than anyone else could/would

Well, he would have to take his physical, sign the deal, and have it approved by the NFL, before it would hit the official site.

Half the NFL has about enough cap space to sign their picks, and maybe re-sign/extend a guy or 2.

The Vikings do have room to sign him, but they might not want to add $3.5 million to their LB room. They have Anthony Barr signed through the end of this year, and probably want to get him to re-up. OTHER NOTABLES WOULD BE Danielle Hunter and Stefon Diggs.

The Vikings have $18 million in cap space, but signing raft picks and addressing a couple of extensions could chew that up in a hurry.

I think Kendricks was kinda upset that he lost leverage: the deal wasn't finalized and his agent probably told the Browns he was deciding between a few teams, but the agent also told RAP that he was going to CLE but to sit on the story til he signed. RAP leaked it early

According to this, if we cut him this year we lose 2.5 million dollars. His 2018 salary is guaranteed. At this point, we're better to keep Collins this year and cut him next year

I'm not sure about the trade ramifications

Maybe we told Kendricks that it's a possibility we sign him long-term if we get rid of Collins

I know some are not fans of Collins but trading him or releasing him undermines the whole depth advantage gained in the Kindrick signing. There is no cap burden from keeping both players on the roster.
