Camp bumps and bruises adding up Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 08.07.2007 The normal bumps and bruises of training camp are beginning to take a small but noticeable toll on the Cleveland Browns. Linebacker Willie McGinest was absent from practice for the second consecutive day Tuesday and left guard Eric Steinbach left practice after falling on his knee, adding to a growing list of minor injuries stemming from training camp McGinest flew to Los Angeles Tuesday to have a doctor evaluate a back issue. Steinbach, meanwhile, left the practice field with Browns trainer Marty Lauzon after the first period of team drills and did not return to the field. "I would say he bruised (his knee), but I haven't looked at it," head coach Romeo Crennel said. Luckily there is still more than a month until the team's season opener against Pittsburgh on September 9. If Steinbach misses any time during the preseason however, he'll be surrendering the crucial opportunity to gel with the other members of the Browns' revamped offensive line in a game situation. Backup Lennie Friedman stepped in for the Browns in Steinbach's place. Listed as the second-team center behind Hank Fraley, Friedman also plays both guard positions. He started a pair of games, one at left guard and one at right, in '06. He appeared in all 16 games in total. "That's my job," Friedman said. "That's what I'm here to do." Friedman came to the Browns via a trade from Denver following training camp a year ago after the team's center position was decimated by injuries and the sudden retirement of Bob Hallen. He was re-signed by the club to a one-year deal on March 21. "It feels good to feel like you were appreciated for what you did," he said. "And the fact that they brought you back and wanted you to play for them, it's a good feeling." As for the team's other injuries, Tim Carter missed practice Tuesday with a thumb injury -- his second injury of training camp so far -- while linebacker Matt Stewart was absent to be evaluated for a shoulder injury that has kept him out of several days of practice. Kenny Wright, who was listed as one of theteam's starting cornerbacks on a depth chart released Monday, has missed practice the last couple days with a groin injury. Fellow cornerback DeMario Minter (foot) and offensive lineman Isaac Sowells (concussion) also missed practice, along with rookie running back Jerome Jackson (leg) and offensive lineman Andrew Hoffman (elbow). "As these injuries begin to mount up that's a little concern as you look at things going into a game," Crennel said. "So far all the players on this team have shown that they work very hard to try and get back and to rehab injuries. "I feel good about them working to get back out there on the field." Defensive lineman Orpheus Roye underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on August 2 but is expected to be back for the team's regular season opener against Pittsburgh on Sept. 9. Browns cornerback Gary Baxter, meanwhile, has continued to rehab since coming off the physically unable to perform list, appearing at select practices with the team. So far, he has taken part in solely individual drills. He was on the field and participated Tuesday. Despite the troubles, this year's injuries are a significant improvement on the situation from 2006 Training Camp. At this point a year ago, the club had already lost center LeCharles Bentley and cornerback Daylon McCutcheon (at that time unknowingly) for the season, and suffered minor injuries to several others. Home Page Good news is, these are not near as devastating as these kinds of things have been in the past.

Oh dear.
Hope Steinbach's knee will let him go on Saturday. I'm dying to know how this new line looks like at near full strength. At this point I don't care what happens with Tucker cuz he's lost all respect in my eyes.
So far it just looks like training camp wearing on bodies, which is normal.

Well, I'd rather have alot of minor injuries rather than one big serious injury to a key player...I guess.

I think these guys will do ok. You also have to take in account that oppressive heat/oven that they are working in on the field (was 120'F at M&T Bank Saturday) during the Ravens/Redskins scrimmage.....

Yeah, it's amazing the conditions the players have to practice in especially wearing full pads.

It's funny how about 25 years ago I couldn't wait to run up "Tank Hill" in full combat gear, but now I'll pay someone to do it. ....Honestly though, if the money was right, I'd do it in full pads, if the money was right...

Yes he did. Friedman started his career with Denver but he was with Chicago when we traded for him.

With the way injuries have been reported in the past, I hope we don't awaken to the news he is out for the season.

I don't think Tucker deserves that... I'm not sure what kind of problems he was having but people make mistakes... under pressure people often make more serious mistakes. I don't approve of his steriods use but I still want him to comeback and play.
I'm happy that the team is only suffering minor injuries... but there sure seems to be alot of guys missing practices over injuries that I would like to see them play thru...
The last thing I want to see as a fan is that a starter (or multiple starters) miss games with injuries not much worse than a hangnail! I feel like the heatwave we're having is getting to them myself.

Oldcold During training cap, they'll rest a guy to "be sure" and make sure he's 100% in a lot of situations that, during the regular season, they WOULD play through. They'd much rather do that and have him 100% at the start of the season, than have them all banged up by practicing them hurt. I've seen it a 1000 times. If a regular season game was tomorrow, these guys that are resting over "minor injuries"? Would be starting tomorrow.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

You have to consider who you are responding to.
Young kid, opinionated, but not enough life experience to know that you shouldn't judge someone unless you've walked in their shoes.
When I was his age, I probably would've made a dumbass remark like that myself.

Shouldn't judge someone? The guy is a veteran. He knowingly used a banned substance strictly forbidden by the NFL for which the punishment is clear, in a year where the NFL is cracking down on steriods, AFTER watching a teammate be let go by the Browns last year for doing the same thing.
We start this year playing our three biggest rivals and Tucker won't be here for any of those games because of his moronic decision to use drugs. What is it about this situation we shouldn't judge?
I sympathize with his mental disorder but "athletes" who use drugs are cheaters, pure and simple. He disrespected his team, himself and the Browns organization, and while he did own up to his mistake and his past history is clean, it was still a terrible, terrible decision on his part.
There is absolutely no room for drug users in the Browns organization. We've got enough challenges to deal with already.
**Insert clever signature here attributed to some historical figure that sounds interesting but has been taken completely out of context.

Someone once said to me 'that's a pretty forceful argument' to a post that I had written. They then went on to say 'I still don't agree with it.' Guess that's how I feel here. I think this is the most important thing you said. Quote:

Here you have a guy who made a mistake, albeit a big one. You also have the same guy admitting it, taking responsibility for his actions, and being remorseful about it. Add in the fact that he has no prior violations and that he has been a pretty dependable player for the Browns, and you have a situation that calls for some forgiveness.
To say 'he's lost all respect in my eyes' without the slightest compassion is wrong, IMO.
I don't like it anymore than the next guy that he let the team and us fans down. I'm not trying to hide that fact. I'm pissed as hell at him. Make no mistake about it.
But there is a personal side to this too. I know you've made mistakes in your life as have I and everyone else on this board.
You can't expect people to be perfect. But you can expect them to do the right thing when they do make mistakes. Looks like that's what Tucker is doing to me.
That's pretty hard not to respect in my eyes.

Until it's a 100% sure chance that it's a bruise, I'm still worried. We've had nothing but bad luck, so obviously you know where I'm coming from. It does sound a bit more positive than the usual reports we've gotten over the years.

sorry no links, but that show runs repeatedly all day long so it's almost as good as a link.

Always prepared for this crap. Always get the same sick feeling in my stomach. Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't be hurt that bad, Steiner . . .
Here's a little blurb from ESPN . . .
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp07/news/story?id=2966208
Cleveland Browns: Offensive guard Eric Steinbach sprained his right knee when he fell on it at practice, an injury the club will surely treat cautiously for the remainder of training camp.
Steinbach, Cleveland's biggest free-agent signing during the offseason, hurt his knee during the Browns' indoor workout Tuesday. He walked off the field without a limp, escorted by a team trainer, and did not return.
Before an MRI and other tests were performed, coach Romeo Crennel guessed that Steinbach had only bruised his knee.
Crennel was not available for comment on Wednesday because the team's practice was closed to fans and media. He is expected to give an update on Steinbach's condition on Thursday

Also Rishuz, I'd like to add that it's been said on espn that Tuck's positive test came as a result of the meds he was taking for his "mental illness" and not as a result of trying to beef himself up for gameplay. So, I quite agree with you.

So I guess this implies that MRIs, etc. were performed, and that showed that he had a sprained knee? Or is that just what they're calling it?
Also from the same story:

Crennel was not available for comment on Wednesday because the team's practice was closed to fans and media. He is expected to give an update on Steinbach's condition on Thursday as well as one on linebacker Willie McGinest.
The 35-year-old McGinest missed two days of practice this week after complaining of tightness in his back. He asked to see his personal physician in Los Angeles, and the Browns granted him permission.
On Tuesday, Crennel said McGinest, who had made 159 starts during a 14-year NFL career, had back problems while he was with New England.
McGinest played in 14 games for the Browns last season. He missed one game with a calf injury and another with an ankle problem.

I believe the last report was a bone bruise and he is out for two weeks... so he should be back for light duty the week of the 4th preseason game and should be full-go for the opener.

Just keep him the hell out of that clinic, we don't need another staph infection.
I was hoping for a quality janitor in the late rounds of the draft, Maybe we can trade for some clorox and clean that place up.

Ya couple weeks, I key to me was when they said he WALKED off the field under his own power, sorry but ya dont invest millions in a guy and make him walk off the field if your even slightly concerned about his health, so with that I figured he was ok...
