I don't think he will be a shutdown guy right away, but I do believe Ward is going to hold his own.

I don't, Ward was picked 4th for a reason, just watch and see he was (@ OSU) and will be a shutdown, take away their best WR, and 1 side of the field CB quickly in his NFL career ... JMHO

I mean that I think Ward is going to flash signs of being a very good corner right away. I think he'll have a learning curve, get some penalties, and get beat some in his first year or two. However, I think he is going to show you his mad skills right away and make plays that are made by only the very best corners.

I think to have expectations that he gives up only one big play is reasonable since he will see Gordon daily. That has to help him in his learning curve!

Random question, do you think John Dorsey consulted Urban Meyer, heavily for the #4 pick?

Seems a little Ohio. Macedonia, Ohio

Yeah, I'd say if Meyer wasn't consulted heavily there would be something wrong!

Maybe we talked to Meyer about character and work habits. As to how he plays I doubt Meyer would have anything to say that the tape doesn't show.

Why would anyone ask Meyer about character .. he has none and has no clue what it is ...

Now that i think of it its remarkably hypocritical of U to not care for Hue for throwing everyone under the bus after the bye week episode at the FACTORY OF SADNESS but to think so highly of Urban ... the things Meyer did in recruiting alone were DISGUISTING ... u wanna talk about a LOW LIFE ...

I remember something right after we picked Ward, that someone from the Browns(was it Dorsey) was critical of how the DBS were coached at OSU

Hopefully, it wasn't Dorsey. Whoever said that is clueless. Ohio State has a long, long line of good DBs in the NFL. I can't think of another school that adds so many quality DBs to the pros.

I will say that OSU asks a lot of their corners. They often play on an island.

Yeah, unfortunately I was so wrong about Eli Apple. I thought he'd be killing it but nope. OSU does ask a lot of their corners.

When you have people like the Bosa Brothers and just literally all the great OSU d-linemen, you want the press on the outside.

It's tough to know much about a person's character, drive, etc in college ... but Eli Apple has proven to be a malcontent in the NFL

I just want to give you something to think about. Yes, going against Gordon is going to help Ward get ready for the season but it won't make him bullet proof. As formidable as Josh is he presents specific types of problems for a defender. That won't necessarily help Ward against all of the Wide-outs he'll see week-to-week. Setting an expectation of giving up 1 big play per game is a pretty high bar even for a veteran corner. We got him to be a press man corner and he will win some and lose some. In some weeks he'll lose multiple snaps. If he can't meet your standard don't write him off.

These are the veteran receivers he'll face this year...

Antonio Brown, 2x
Mike Thomas, a very tough assignment
Enuwa/Kearse, meh, actually a healthy Enuwa can hurt you
Cooper/Nelson, they present a test
Crabtree/John Brown, savvy vet and a burner 2x
Keenan Allen, dangerous big play Pro Bowl level
Evans/Jackson, they can make plays for anywhere on the field
Tyreek Hill, can produce an explosive play at anytime
Julio Jones, without question a top tier WR
A J Green, has made a living against us, 2x
Hopkins, another elite WR
Torrey Smith, down a year or so, has something to prove
Thomas/Sanders, can't be taken lightly
Jeffery, if it's not Ertz then it's Jeffery in the Red Zone
Tate/Jones, both solid veterans who make plays.

I was mistaken about the Eagles and Lions too. When I was on the official website somehow I mixed them in from the pre-season to the regular season.

Hey man, I was just trying to be agreeable. I wouldn't have called him myself. I might have talked to his DC or position coach.

You have to remember, I am a Gator. Urban left Florida because of health reasons my ass. He left because he kept getting beat out on players by Saban, so he had his panic attack and moved on to easier ground.

I liked Urban, but once Tebow left, he knew he had to move on as well.

Urban is a good front runner. Put him in 3rd down the stretch and he fades fast.

I think Eli's issue was that he was having huge family problems. But, my point remains..............no other college team puts more good DBs into the NFL than Ohio State.

If Dorsey said they were poorly coached, he's an idiot. And judging by some of his picks in this past draft, I wouldn't call that a stretch.

I thnk what Dorsey had stated was we were going to teach him to eyeball the QB as he defended. Something he was not taught in college. That he would struggle with the first year but by year two he will be a stud. Pretty sure that is what he was saying and not really a slam on OSU in their coaching skills just something not necessary in college that will be asked of him in the NFL.

You have to understand that there are a lot of OSU fans in here and anything but glowing reviews of the program are going to be met with a thumbs down.

And that's OK...you just have to understand that and move along. Fans are fans. I expect them to stand up for the home team. I'd think less of them if they didn't.

One of the reason Dorsey was so high in ward was because of the coaching he received at osu because they are one of very few teams that play a lot of press coverage.

Wasn't trying to be controversial, just stating what I recollected. OSU teaches their players to be the best players for the COLLEGE GAME, their goal is not to prepare them for the NFL, that is a by product of their talent. College Coaches are looking to WIN not prepare for the next level.

For someone who always wants "fair and unbiased" talk, woukd you give Dorsey and these rookies a fair shot? Dorsey has a history of being a very good talent evaluator. You are already condemning players who haven't taken an NFL snap yet.

I didn't love the Mayfield pick either, but he is who we picked so I'm going to hope for the best and give him a fair shot to prove me wrong.

This is absolutely incorrect. I've had the pleasure to talk to most of the coaches at Ohio State, including Kerry Coombs, the formed DB coach. One of the main pitches in their recruitment is that OSU will give you the best chance of producing in the NFL. A lot of their recruitment graphics is built around the idea that if you are coached by X then your average NFL career will be Y. Urban has really mastered the mindset of putting monetary value on all of his players and the program. A lot of times you'll see reporters compare Urban to a CEO because of this mindset. It's also one of the reasons why Ohio State players are so vocal about working for free at the NCAA level.

Under Tressel and Fink's leadership your model for Ohio State football would certainly be correct. However, Urban prides himself in getting his players paid in the NFL (Rightfully so).

Well according to CHS OSU doesn't do that...lol laugh

CHS, I'm sure its a recruiting tool there level of competition and their level of coaching and success as a college program does help but mostly the fact that they recruit well they have the TALENT of kids that can go to the next level.

Even in your quotes you don't mention that they state they prepare them for the NFL game just a lot of puffing to sell OSU as a good stepping stone to get to the next level...once they have them....they just do whatever they can to win as a college powerhouse. Not to prepare them to the NFL... well just I think that is Logical Mr. Spock wink

I think what system a team runs has a huge impact on the results. As we can see, OSU certainly doesn't care about preparing QB's for the NFL. lol

I don't think their main concern is to prepare any specific player for the NFL. However, the D system they run most certainly requires their CB's to press cover. As a result, it makes their DB's much more prepared for the NFL simply due to the D they run.

I don't think the specific goal is to prepare them for the NFL. I do however feel that the system they run has a bi product of making their DB's more NFL ready than a lot of systems many other college teams run.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Curious, when was the last great QB they had, please don't say Smith...lol laugh was it Art Schlichter? Man did he bomb.

Oddly enough Troy Smith might have been the best, I thought that kid was going to be great and even hoped we would get him...shocked he didn't make good???

But imagine if they started getting the best QBs around???

Maybe Bobby Hoying. He had a short run in the NFL. Started games. He also holds an NFL record....for most pass completions in a season without a touchdown.
