What choices will he even have to survive? Most of the time he will just cause a new crime, try to go out in a bang, or do some small crime to go back to where he can get three square meals a day and is generally safer than living on the streets.

The current system doesn't work.

Works out well except for the innocent guy that gets jailed or accused.

There it is....you gotta toe the line and be a cookie cutter member to be on the left...no independent thought allowed outside of the party lines no matter how off kilter they may be.....kinda cult-ish.

I want some of what you're smoking. What I said proves none of that. You just love to justify your stereotypes with any little nugget you can find. smh

It's been real interesting over the last year to see how many dyed in the wool liberals are being eviscerated for committing the heresy of diversity of thought, of daring to question. It's sad how free thinking isn't on the list of what liberals are tolerant of.

Actually the examples of herd mentality are both numerous and obvious.

Your own statement that "if he is a minority, and liberal, than what he said is even worse" is one fairly recent example.

The statement made stands on its own. Whether the person is, or is not, minority, liberal, or both, or neither, has about as much bearing on the validity, or lack therof, of the statement as asking "what color shoes was he wearing?"

Unless, of course, you have a belief that all minorities, and all liberals, must by necessity share the same mindset on all things. That would be what stereotyping actually looks like, unlike the blind, unthinking rejection of all differing thought processes which you, along with a vast majority of those on the left, appear to practice.

All your "diversity" is based upon immutable characteristics: sex, race, gender preference... it absolutely isn't based on freedom of thought.

You yourself just proved how quick you were willing to turn on Buck when you thought he was a liberal minority instead of saying "Gee, that doesn't sound right.. maybe I should engage him in a discussion to see how he got there".

Nope. You already have a preconceived notion on exactly what a liberal and minority is supposed to believe and parrot. The moment you thought he wasn't towing the line you were ready to turn on him.

I'm the furthest left on here, I don't believe in PC culture, advocate for strong gun rights, and I want to abolish ICE, but no one ever runs a purity test on me, nor do I on others. The real problem is that a lot of Democrats don't understand how culpable they are in creating a pipeline to prison for many people. I would argue that while Reagan was bad for our prison industry, Clinton was the worst offender of any modern President. HRC has even bragged about being so empathetic that she was cool with slave labor in the governor's mansion. Using prison labor perverses both parties. The problem with using free prison labor or reduced salary (which goes back to the prison eventually), is that your economy begins to rely on it and if you rely on prison labor, you begin to make more laws to feed that beast.

Good points. I'm curious though to know what industries are being propped up or supplemented on an appreciable level by prison labor. Full disclosure: NC has an inordinate number of specialty license plates...

Oh, as far as purity tests... try challenging any victim based narrative or question what constitutes racism. You'll probably get a different reaction. You've mentioned Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin previously.. I imagine you've come across Brett Weinstein. If you haven't looked in to his story, I think it might be worth your time.

While prison labor has seen many specific cases of abuse, it is really not all that widespread today. Also, it is difficult to train the inmates in how to do real-world useful work without the real-world part. Difficult to justify paying the inmate a real world wage while incarcerated so the extra money has to go somewhere, a discount for the employer hiring inmates is not unreasonable.

Now, you guys are always real careful to point out the difference between slavery and indentured servitude, prison labor would be the definition of indentured servitude.

This states over half of the prison population works for free or reduced wages. There's been a lot of cases where megacorporations buy goods made by prisoners.

Also I didn't see that before, thank you. Before I give my thoughts, I really want to start a thread on the intellectual darkweb, but I really only know them from passing. So maybe in a few weeks, when I can research it more. But back to Brett, I think this is the problem when you let white people define what racism is. He obviously took the correct step, but white people thinking they needed to be allies by inviting themselves into everything ruined this great tradition. Obviously at that school the poc did not have a real voice. I do think there is this neoliberal fantasy where race and topics around race, like culture, will be offlimits for everyone, but no one will be offended. Have you ever heard of Slavoj Zizek? He's a Communist who rails against political correctness.

And what would you call indentured servitude for life, Esquire?

It's probably why we're discussing 'prison labor' now as reduced paid work makes up the majority of prison labor.

Just exactly what you called it, they are wards of the state, not property.
Not that many lifers altogether, no sentence-extending going on with them, at least.

Much paid prison labor is internal make-work.

Ben Shapiro is my current favorite. Zizek I found too hard to understand thru the accent. Peterson and Rubin also good, Molyneux also interesting but a bit too... philisophical, I guess.

Shapiro I disagree with a bit on his abortion stance, but it is much closer to socially correct than current practice. Other than that, he is right on. Plus I like his presentation.

...and yet, you just saw 2 (no 3) examples of the exact opposite. If what you assert is true, we'd all sound like Buck or OCD.

So desperate to score points, you'll just manufacture stuff.

I am absolutely down with an IDW thread. I've been thinking about starting one up as well for a while but haven't had the time to really devote to it.

We start with education. Learning Facts, the Arts, Playing nice with others... We share and promote 'original' thoughts, critical thinking, artistic expression... We spend most of our lives broadening our horizons.

So many many more obvious and glaring differences that I would spend months listing them. So my best answer would be to do some reading, several libs on here would be happy to point you to some resources for that. I'm coming up empty at the moment trying to think of somewhere to point you that would get a guy like you started.

Wowsers, I’ve inadvertently struck a nerve with everyone. I apologize to anyone offended by my usage of the term “chain gangs”. I didn’t mean that in the literal sense. For the record, I’m a white male in his later 30s, very middle class, very much tree hugging Democrat.

We can all agree our prison system is bloated, I’d like to encourage a system where, nonviolent inmates are released from prison early, and give back to the community. If we can give them skills to be functional members of society, that could reduce the chance of people going back to prison. Yes, if we had less prisoners, that would alleviate some burden on law abiding tax payers, but that wasn’t my main issue with the prison system.

I know this is a slippery slope, I’m just coming up with an idea to make a bad system better.

Well when you actually talk about the rehabilitation aspect rather than the incarceration aspect, it strikes a nerve with a lot of people.

Something similar to the 3C Camps might work. My grandfather worked in one of these when he was young during the great depression.

Interesting, my biggest takeaway from that wiki article was this

Quote:
Sources written at the time claimed[5] an individual's enrollment in the CCC led to improved physical condition, heightened morale, and increased employability

According to my grandfather it was back breaking work, but the trade off was a sense of pride in accomplishment, learning skills, and it was like a brotherhood (so a sense of community). Not bad things to instill in young men who had little other opportunity if you ask me. They got to earn a living that most would send home to their families as they lived in a military type structure where meals, medical, shelter, and clothes were provided. The pay wasn't great but back then it wasn't great anywhere and it beat starving.
