I have 4 options...tell me what sounds good and viable.

1. Turn all asylum seekers and boarder crossers away at the boarder.

2. Status Quo processing asylum seekers

3. Allow kids to be held in adult detention centers with their parents. Current law does not permit kids and adults to be housed together if I am not mistaken.

4. Allow adults with kids a free pass into the US with a pricipal's note telling them they have to report for court in 6 months.

I think 2 and 4 work but only if we made sweeping immigration changes that neither political party wants to deal with. 1 doesn't work because it's immoral to turn away people seeking asylum without processing, and 3 detaining people is not morally or fiscally responsible. The reason why 2 and 4 don't work well is because we choose not to make it work. We don't appropriately punish people for hiring illegal immigrants, but instead try to focus the punishment on the immigrant themselves. If we made the penalty for hiring undocumented workers severe enough, maybe businesses would refrain from hiring them. By that same measure, we should make it much easier for people to apply for temporary worker status like other countries do, rather than immediately push for a green card.

Quote:

The real solution lies with creating an environment in which these people don't want to leave their country. However, most of these countries that produces asylum seekers (if they are really truly seek asylum) are run by left leaning philosophies and I can only imagine the pain that you would feel to have to admit that maybe the left leaning ideologies forund in these countries are the source of the problems. I see left leaning cities like Detroit and Chicago and any other large metropolitan area being a microcosm of these countries. The mirror don't lie

We are responsible in big ways for why people from Honduras/El Salvador/etc want to leave their country. We've directly impacted their people negatively. We'd have to get into the business of nation building to fix that and I doubt people would be up for spending money on foreign infrastructure. This is also not a byproduct of left leaning ideologies but a combined effort over several administrations in the US, where even our so called "liberal" President Obama ordered drone strikes like someone orders a cheeseburger for lunch. The US doesn't have a liberal party but rather a center-right and far-right set of parties.

Recent events should be exactly why people should be cautious about giving the government more and more power. Instead, people want to let the government have their guns, they want to put the government in charge of our healthcare. They keep wanting to give the government more power. This week should be a wake up call as to why that is a terrible idea.

I know it's been this way for a while, but when did political victories become more important than doing whats right? Sadly, it feels like neither side actually cares about the children.

America got the president they elected. If you did not see this coming, you are in denial, oblivious or ignorant. The signs were all there and we elected the screaming Fox News watcher because Hillary was no better of a choice.

Think about that. Hillary was not a better choice. Why is that?

There is a mean, cruel, lying piece of crap in the White House that bullied, stole and lied his way to the top.

America is not a We the People anymore. It is left versus right, Liberal versus conservative and we are a lesser nation because we forgot about thinking about others instead of ourselves.

Well said. Could this be the beginning of actual dialogue on this forum? I would like that for a change. I get tired of feeling the need to constantly put down the flames of trumpian fascism in here. Even when he does good things I cringe because I know that just gives him license to do something horrible and or disgusting.

Are you comparing the war in the Middle East to illegal immigrants and immigrants seeking asylum? Your whataboutism is a reach bro. And do you really think we don't care about kids being killed? GMAB

I am saying that those kids were separated from their families, with 0 chance of ever being together again, and some posters on here never said a word about it.

This isn't a whatabout, its showing the hypocrisy of some, that's all. I don't know if those don't care, because they never said a word about it.

I too only think critically about the President and what he's done wrong a decade after their term ends. I don't really point out the "whatavoutism", but complaining about two previous administrations when a different administration is in charge, may be peak whatavoutism. "You think I am Republican lackey? I'll have you know I only voted for Bush the 2nd time because of 9/11."

The real challenge is that we now place ideology ahead of practically.

What we should have is an immigration system that requires everyone to have a work visa or proof of citizenship for everything. It is nonsense that you can do things without one. Trump only is making a bad situation worse with the merit based system and the reduction intotals.

No, illegal immigrants will not just self deport, no matter how much it is wished. As long as we shoot holes in our own immigration system to manipulate the outcome to our advantage we will never be able to address the problem.

More fake news...

https://www.yahoo.com/news/father-says-little-honduran-girl-time-cover-not-024329900.html

Iconic picture that has gone viral of as little girl in pink crying after being "separated from mom" and is being used to promote the vitriol surround this weeks immigration issue is not of an immigrant separated from mother. The father and the Honduran government both confirm this girl has remained with her mother the entire time during her asylum process.

This is just like the picture last week of kids in cages from 2014 being played off as if it was a pic from last week.

Based on responses from some of the highest ranking in the GOP, it would appear that Trump has gone too far.

GOP Strategist Quits 'Corrupt' Party Of 'Feckless Cowards,' Will Vote For Democrats

Hayley Miller
HuffPost•June 20, 2018

Veteran GOP strategist Steve Schmidt renounced his Republican Party membership on Wednesday and pledged to vote for Democrats in an effort to preserve “what is right and decent” in the United States.

In a series of scathing tweets, Schmidt blasted the GOP as “corrupt, indecent and immoral” and “fully the party of Trump.”

“It is filled with feckless cowards who disgrace and dishonor the legacies of the party’s greatest leaders,” tweeted Schmidt, an MSNBC political analyst who has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. “Today the GOP has become a danger to our democracy and our values.”

Schmidt, who served as an adviser in the George W. Bush White House, strongly condemned the Trump administration’s policy of separating families caught illegally crossing the border into the U.S.

“This child separation policy is connected to the worst abuses of humanity in our history,” he tweeted. “It is connected by the same evil that separated families during slavery and dislocated tribes and broke up Native American families. It is immoral and must be repudiated.”

Schmidt, who said in July that Trump had the “impulse control of a little child,” joins a growing chorus of political pundits and lawmakers to rebuke the administration’s practice of separating children from parents facing prosecution for illegally crossing the border.

 “All Americans are rightly horrified

by the images we are seeing on the news, children in tears pulled away from their mothers and fathers,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said. “This must stop. Now.”

Doesn't change a thing. 2300 Kids still taken from the parents ans shipped off around the country. Disgusting.

And that little girl was not reported as separated, nobody knew for sure what happened in her case. It was her trauma at the time that was heart-wrenching.

Wow. Trump separation policy is closing the divides and uniting people in non-partisan backlash. I'm guessing Trump didn't plan that even though I think he planned the outrage.

Whatabout . . . whatabout . . . LMAO.

I don't remember Obama ever sitting in front of a camera and making an excuse like that. Maybe I missed it. But, you know - if he did - while I am no economist, I have a hunch that the economy when Obama took over was a little different than the economy when Trump took over. Not a lot, but a smidge different. One thing to say make an excuse if the excuse is actually - you know, true. As opposed to making an excuse that is, say a big fat freaking lie. ERRRR - alternative fact. smh.

If you never heard O say that, you weren't even aware.

And stop with the 'what about' thing. Makes you look foolish.

Trump inherited a far better economy that Obama, and floated over the stock market rise.

To hear him complain about the economy is a laughable lie.
