So our first game is against our enemy the Pittsburgh Steelers. Just got my tickets purchased today! Woohoo! I can't wait for this game. There is nothing more refreshing than opening day with a new lineup and new hope. Anyway... What I want to discuss in this thread is... How important do you think a Week 1 victory is? How damaging is a week 1 loss?

I think that winning in Week 1 against our rivals the Steelers after losing so many (including embarrasing) games to them over the last few years would be absolutely terrific. It would get the fans really heated up for the season and give the team a vote of confidence. We have been so bad in the division games with Romeo at the helm.

I think this game matters more than any other game of the season (unless down the road we are looking at a possibly playoff berth)... More important than beating the bengals at home week 2 I think.

Let me know your thoughts!

Its gonna be a lot tougher than most think though b/c i know they are going to BLITZ BLITZ BLITZ!!!!

I think everyone wants to win the first game, but if it doesnt happen.. there's still 15 more games to play..

starting the season off though with a division win would be a great lift though seeing that they didnt have any division wins last year.

According to ballpeen the entire season hinges on this game....

I think it's one of sixteen....the importance lies in the fact that it's one of 3 divisional games that we open the season with, but nothing more than that. The game against Oakland is just as important as this one in respect to the fact that its a short season.

New offense, injuries still along the OL....lots of work to do and only 30 days to do it in.......

Wow,, nice topic....

I'm gonna get shot to pieces on this one, but I think it's gonna be tough to win that game. The Steelers are still a very good team.. Very good! Yeah, they have a new HC, new OC and some other coaches.. But still, they have a solid core of players still in thier prime.

I think winning that game is important from the standpoint that it's a division game and we've sucked in our division for way too long. But in the overall scheme of things, it's 1 of 16... so it's not the end of the world.

While I don't think our season hinges on it completely, I think it sets the tone. Especially since that team out east has had our number for so long and we hate them so much.

Just like the preseason thread I talk about, the first game is equally as important because it's a measuring stick against our hated rival. Last year against the Saints, Deuce McAllister chewed us up, we couldn't protect the QB and we couldn't run the ball. By all means we should have won that game, but that team out east is better than the Saints.

If we're gonna come out flat against that team out east and lay an egg AT HOME, we're in serious, serious trouble in the division cuz I doubt we'll beat them again in the ketchup bowl, and I think we match up atrociously with that team from Kentucky. I think our best shot is that team further east but you can't bank on that either.

We need to win for morale purposes if anything else. I think it would do a ton for the team to boost their spirit.

the steelers showed in the HOF game that if you think they are going to be disorganized and not ready to play -forget about it. They looked sharp and crisp. They will be ready for week one, the question is will we??

I don't know if its right to put the emphasis on one game- the first game. I think it is more important what happens in the first month. That will determine the season. Would be nice to win one of the games against either the steelers, bengals or rats. and add a W against the raiders. IF they can pick off 2 out of 3 home games, that would add some momentum.

There is no power in Week 1.

In Week 1 there is a game.

If there's any power involved in it at all, it's the power we all have to watch, evaluate, critique and log it in our memories so we may compare it to the progress made in the subsequent games.

The game in Week 1 is one of sixteen games on the schedule. It's exactly 1/16th of the regular season. The Browns, in their current re-building mode, could be perceived to not start as well as they finish the season. That makes sense for a team in progress.

A win is always a motivational boost for the team to work harder, and a loss is a motivational boost for the team to work harder.

So, as far as the team goes, there is no real power in Week 1.

On the other hand, so far as the fans go, if the Browns should win, there will be chest thumping done and unrealistic expectations for the remainder of the season made. If it's a loss, the world comes to an end until the excitment of Week 2 catches on and it starts all over.

You're right about the first month telling us a ton more.

But this is against a team that has had our number for the longest time. We should have revenge on our minds for last December's embarassment. Jamal Lewis should carry his same hatred he had before with us. Porter may be gone, but Winslow will want to show them his new wheel and Edwards will want to show them his speed after an ACL surgery.

In theory, the line should protect better...in theory.

If we come out flat against a team that has so much history against us, something's wrong IMO.

EDIT: And if it looks like "here we go again...same ol' Browns." There is NO magic pill to fix it this season.

This is a very important point to consider. Yes, it is 1 of 16 games, but it is the 1st Game with our new line...1st Game with our new RB...& 1st Game of what could be a New Era for this team. A Win would be outstanding, but More Importantly, a Close Game is Essential! If we can give the Squealers All That They Can Handle (even in a loss), it will show the rest of the league & Our Division that the Browns are pushovers No Longer. It will instill Confidence in the team, and show that we are indeed on the Right Track! JMHO Go Brownies!!!

Yea, I think thats an outstanding point,, The first month will tell us a lot more about this team and where it's heading than that first game... I agree

I will be at the Bengals game, week two!!! Woohoo!!!!! I feel that This Game will be the True test of our resolve. I feel that the Bengals also have something to prove this season and are a better team than the Squealers, IMO. This will be a tougher test for our Browns, and if we come out of this game with a 0-2 start, it will start another downward spiral that will be Very Hard to come out of. Because of this game, I feel that the Week-1 Game has to be a Good One (meaning a win)! JMHO Go Brownies!!!!

Peen...lmao...

Let's talk about this offense for game one...Specifically QB...Why???

With as many pre snap movements as we will see...It is IMPARITIVE that the QB of this team is extremely cerebral...Who does that favor???...QUINN...Why do I say this???

Simple...Pre snap movements of an offense dictates pre snap movements of the defense...Now your QB needs to quickly determine where to go with it...

Do I expect Quinn under center game one???...NO...But I DO expect him in there no later than after the bye week...He's the most cerebral QB on this roster...

A win sets the tone for a young team. Opener, home, big rival, in division. The game holds a first to last swing.

Win and we might have a decent season around .500.

Lose, we are probably looking at 4 wins.

The most important thing is the margin. If we win 17-10 great, if we lose 17-10, worse but not the end of the world. But if we lose 30-6 or 24-0 , meaning no tds, no D, that will hurt us a lot. We must make progress in the O and the running game, and our D needs to prove it's even better than last year. That's my take on the importance of this game. Otherwise, it wont make or break the whole season, but we have to go back to square one and start over b/c we got beat 24-0, woe is us.

course if we win 24-0, i'll take that, even though it'll make us cocky and lose the next game.

This is intriguing this year, moreso than in past years due to the new Offense that has reportedly been installed.

Someone mentioned it the other day, and I'd like to reiterate it here:
We should run the plays in the preseason games that we are going to run in the regular season. None of this trying to hide or disguise things.....give 'em the repetitions in August that they will be using in September.

There's no excuse for players to not know passing routes or blocking assignments or line calls if you are practicing and utilizing these same schemes.

It's very simple, and nothing has changed in the basic aspect of the game.
We have to be able to run the ball. If we cannot run the ball, then the presnap reads and quick releases won't mean diddly.

All I know is if we are winning with a few seconds left; and they have the ball, everyone must keep their helmets ON!

IMO: if it wasn't against a division rival; my mindset would be slightly different knowing the 1st regular season game most of the team will not be hitting on all cylinders.

But since we have 3 out of 4 games against our division, its tough losing that early and being that deep in the whole right off the blocks.

It may end up being more accurate if you said win, and we end up with 5 wins, lose and we're 4-12 but that remains to be seen....

However, I do believe that as far as the fans go the 1st game will mean a lot. If we lose and look like we did in last year's opener against NO then there will be calls for Romeo's head almost immediately. Win, especially if it's more than a squeaker, and frankly, that could keep his job safe for the entire season. At least safer than it appears now. IMO

Even with the ????? marks about the " D " line , I think the " D " will bring it this year .. The balance ( and RAC's Job ) are in the hands of Chud starting with Game # 1..

I see this as an extremely important game, both because it's the Steelers and it's the season opener.

If we can come out and put a good whoopin' on the Steelers, that will give us a ton of morale and give us a good starting point. Plus, it gets us a division win.

Winning in week one is imperative, though, no matter who the team is, because it can really set the pace for the year.

However, I'd be excited (not as excited as if we win, but excited enough) if we come out and really have a knock down, drag 'em out battle with the Steelers but come out on the short end. I'm not talking about like last year's game where we had it in the bag. I'm talking about a game like the Eagles game a couple years ago when the Browns were pretty heavy underdogs and fought a very good Eagles team all the way to the last second. I remember after they lost that game, people stood up and applauded the Browns because we saw that if they played every game like that, they'd win a lot more than they'd lose (little did we know the meltdown of Butch Davis after that).

We have to remember that while a lot has changed for the Steelers, the one thing that they truly hang their hat on has not changed dramatically, and that's their defense. Yeah, they lost Porter, but they have a healthy Polamalu and the rest of their D is still pretty intact. Also, we can't speak enough about Lebeau and how he has his team prepared every week, and that he keeps other teams completely befuddled about his defensive schemes.

I've never been as impressed with a defense as I was with their D in that Christmas Eve embarrassment we suffered. They threw everything and the kitchen sink at us. If it wasn't the Browns being victimized, it would have been a truly beautiful thing to see.

So, I want to see the Browns come out and compete. That's my goal for this whole year for the team. We'll win our share of games and lose our share of games, but that's because quite a few of the teams we play are better than us, quite frankly. But, when you play hard, you come into the game prepared, good things happen and you beat the teams you're supposed to and steal a win or two from teams that you weren't supposed to beat.

JMHO

Absolutely agreed.. we are installing a new O a new OC and most likely a new QB along with a new OLine. It is imperative that we work on what we are going to do.. over and over till it's automatic.

The Oline, the OC and the QB don't have the benefit of being together several years and know instinctively how each part works. They need to drill this until they do.

A loss in Week 1 is important only in so much as this team has never shown the ability to bounce back from a loss.

In other words, I will be more worried if we lose than if we don't EVEN IF we play well.

Losses are devastating to the psyche of a young team.

On the other hand, in order to become a good team we have to show the ability to bounce back. It's got to happen sooner or later.

So really I'm torn on this topic i.e., the effects of a loss in Week 1. Probably not as powerful or devastating as many think BUT will also effect the team more than people think until they learn to believe in themselves and bounce back the next week.

I think a win in week one is huge.

Not only does it give us a good start, but for the guys on the team it solidifies why they were working all off season.

I know mentally its hard to train all off season, go through mini-camps, a month of training camp, millions of meetings and so on, only to come to game one and have it go badly. I know these guys want to be in the play offs.

I guess if we play really well and get beat it would be one thing, but to come into week one and look like we picked up where we left off last year.......that would be hard to swallow.

God, thanks a lot. I had finally forgotten about that .

With the Stealers coaching change, I had thought we had a shot to come out and take game one. Probably not easily, but I was optimistic.
After watching there preseason game vs the Saints, I am much, much more doubtful. Pitts looked darn good and primed to play some tuff nose football. they imbarassed the Saints.

Now I haven't seen our boys yet & can't wait for Saturdays game, so I'll reserve judgement for Sunday or Monday when the emotions have died down.

I don't think it will be possible for our offence to come out and look as good as Pitts did this week. (they made it look damn easy).
But I do have hope that our D can come out as fired up as there's. There getting more comfortable in there 3rd year and anything less would be unacceptable. I can't wait to see Grantham out there all fired up. I was afraid we were going to lose him in the offseason.

Lets put it this way...it sure as heck helps to win that opener especially against a division rival. It sets a good tone that with hard work to a goal you get a positive return! It sure don't hurt winning that opener.

Is the season Over if you don't? No, way - unless you never really had the team behind you. Week 10...yep thats when teams will tend to slump their shoulders and resign to the fact that they are not winners.

But it sure would be deserved if we win that Opener

Depends on how the game plays out....as alluded to earlier, the margin of the score, the turnovers, the time of possession...

It's neat in some ways that we open up with the Steelers, but I'd rather be playing the Saints again, truth be told.

If we play well and lose, it's not the end of the season but it sure would suck.

A win would be huge though, since it's the Steelers and our home opener. It would be very nice if we could make a statement and pound them in our own house. I'm tired of losing, and I'm really tired of losing to the Steelers.

So, if you say they think it's important, who am I to argue,,, Thanks

I am looking for progress. Progress from last season to this season and then from week 1 to week 16. I really don't care about the number of wins vs. losses. I want 16 wins but I also know that 7 wins is going to be tough. As long as this team makes progress from week to week, that is all that I care about.

With that being said, I would love nothing more than for the Browns to whip the Steelers to start the season. Sister is married to a Steelers fan and he has converted her so I have to deal with them. A Browns win would just be awesome.

Signing Steinbach - $49.5 million
Signing Lewis - $5 million
Drafting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn - millions more
Restoring the Browns to champions - priceless.

It is......but it echoes mine.

We have to win that first game.

Like she said, I suppose we could lose a hard fought game blown by a coach or something and not have it dictate the season....and I was saying we don't need to hear any of this stuff about playing a vanilla o during the preseason.

Just run the dadgum plays and hide maybe a triple reverse or something.

The RAC lead Browns are 1-11 in divisional play. To get a win in week 1 would be a sign that the team is improving.

As for another loss to the Steelers? Ehh... A close loss would be useless. We have been close before. A loss to the Steelers = long putrid season.

I think this game means a lot because it's a divisional game, I remember many last year saying, after the loss to N.O., that it was not the end of the season, same goes for this season too. A loss in week 1, even to the Steelers, would not be the end of the season. However, a blowout loss to the Steelers would be very bad for team morale, and my how the fans and media will be calling for RAC's head and Quinn to start.

I think it's important that we play a very competitive game, even if we lose. We can still show solid improvement in a loss. A loss does not feel good, obviously, but you need to take something positive from it should we lose.

Now, do I feel that we can win, hell yes. Several things will have to happen, QB play will need to be virtually flawless, no turnovers and make accurate passes to the WR's and TE's, OL needs to protect the QB and open running lanes for the RB's, Jamal Lewis will need to be a BIG factor in pounding the ball, WR's and TE's need to be in the right place and catch the ball, the D needs to stop the oppsoing O by slowing down their running game and covering their WR's and TE's, also need to see more pressure in the backfield, need to see our O produce more first downs, and finally, solid ST play will be a big help.

Now, these things need to show up every week, not just week 1. This game, too me, is more important because it's a divisional opponent. All games are important, a win is a good thing a loss is not good, wheather it's week 1 or week 16. I agree with the poster who said that the first month should show how this team is going to play this season.

Do I expect Quinn under center game one???...NO...But I DO expect him in there no later than after the bye week...He's the most cerebral QB on this roster...

We know this because....? He played for Notre Dame? He was coached by Charlie Weiss? He played in, what is considered, a more pro ready scheme?

Nah, I'll believe it when I see it. I want him to prove it on the field. Too me, Quinn was not overly impressive at Notre Dame. Now I'm not saying Quinn won't be good and I certainly don't have much confidence in Frye or Anderson, but I need to see some of this magic before I call him the Browns savior. Too me, he's just another QB project, no guarentees. I do agree, that if we are not in playoff contention later in the season, then it would be good to get him some in game experience. When he does get in some games, that's when we will know what he has. btw, Dorsey is also very cerebral, may not have the skill to be a starter but he has a brain, tis why he's still with the team.

Sister is married to a Steelers fan and he has converted her

Dis-own her. You deserve better than a sister like that. She's a whore.

(sorry giba, couldn't help myself)

I thought about disowning her but I have decided that it is better to convert their youngest daughter to be a Browns fan! She roots for the Browns instead of the Steelers which angers her mom and dad! YES!

Only problem is that my sister watches my 2 year old once a week. I stopped in to pick her up one day and she is running around their house with a Steelers shirt on! They even brainwashed her into saying Go Steelers. Argh! I have since righted her mind and she says Go Browns but I am leary every time they babysit!

Signing Steinbach - $49.5 million
Signing Lewis - $5 million
Drafting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn - millions more
Restoring the Browns to champions - priceless.

A win at HOME would be huge to start the season, considering how bad this team has been at home.

A win against Pittsburgh at HOME is gigantic.

We've been close too many times, a win would be finally getting over the hump.

The victory would be such a positive event for this team, it could change the psyche of not only the fans, but the players also.

IMO, a win week one at HOME against Pittsburgh posesses a lot of power.

Being in the game and losing, could also be just as powerful in the opposite direction unfortunately.
