New thread ... let's hope for a W in Oakland today

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I think he's pretty much done..has been for a couple years. I've always said he should be a closer..but I think his days of a starter or even long man are done...

I disagree.

Our hitting has been very consistent.

Indians moves:

•RHP Adam Plutko optioned to AAA
•LHP Marc Rzepczynski contract selected
•40-man move to add Zep TBA

Barring something unexpected, this means Shane Bieber will remain the 5th starter when Carlos Carrasco returns from the DL.

In a way, the surgery vindicates Salazar in that it proves that there is actually something wrong with him physically. For the last few months since spring training the Indians have subtly leaked that the consensus was that his problems were between his ears. When you hear things like that from team-paid announcers like Tom Hamilton and Rick Manning, you know it is not them, the announcers, talking out of school about a player. Its them acting as the team's mouthpiece to get the message to the player, imo.

I do agree that Salazar's future - if he has one - is probably in short relief, because he can't throw all his repertoire without hurting his elbow or his shoulder. He's pretty much a one or maybe two-pitch pitcher.

The Indians have released LHP Shawn Morimando. That clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Rzepczynski.

Francona: Carrasco will come off the DL to start on Friday against the A's. Tito said the pitcher hit 97 mph in his rehab start with Double-A Akron Saturday. Threw 58 pitches in game and finished with some more in bullpen.

Not necessarily.

I had a nerve impingement in my shoulder, and they did arthroscopic surgery on it, and I was back to normal activities in a couple of months. The bursa was severely inflamed, but the cuff was almost completely intact.

Tendinitis is often aggravated with overhead activities, or activities that put strain on the shoulder. Pitching would definitely count. Just because he has severe tendinitis doesn't automatically mean a tear that requires surgical repair. I would guess that the main thing they are doing is removing spurs in the shoulder joint.

I would add that I just had surgery on my knee for a similar condition. My knee had numerous spurs that were causing the pateller tendon to hang, and snap, as I moved my leg. I also had bone fragments in the back of the knee.

I was back to normal (or whatever qualifies as normal fr me) after that surgery within 2 months.

That inning sucked. Lindor didn't get to hit a 2nd time, and they only scored 8 in the 8th.. rofl

He could set a Major League record with a 4th extra base hit in the 9th.

Going to the top of the 9th, I am going to go out on a limb and say that Clevinger probably picks up his 7th win today.

Remember rightfielder Jay Bruce?

He turned out to be an excellent late season pick-up for the Tribe last year.

In only 149 at bats with the Indians in 2017 he hit 7 homers (18 extra base hits total) (including a dramatic walk-off double to extend the Indians win streak to 22 games)

In the national league he was an all-star three times and won a Silver Slugger twice.

Anyway, this year he’s tanking.

He opted to go back to the NY Mets where he’s hitting:

212 at bats, 3 homers, .212 batting average.

So yesterday was the first game of the second half of the season.

The Indians now stand at 45-37.

With a 9 game lead in the AL Central.

Last year at this point the Indians were at 44-38.

With only a 1 1/2 game lead over both Minnesota and Kansas City! (tied for second, right behind the Tribe)

Last year was a very good year for the Cleveland Indians. This year is even better (so far).

Remember Francisco Mejia?

The Indians minor league catcher at Columbus.

He started this year horribly. He was hitting under .200 the first few months this year.

It looked like he lost his Major League potential.

As recently as June 22nd his average was only .251.

Since then, in the last nine games, he’s gone 20 for 38. His average is up to .291.

I’d say he’s back in the conversation.

I wonder how his defense is coming. Two years ago they were saying “He’s gonna be something special in two years.”

Klubs backk on track with 6 IP and 3 ER. His last start was scary, but he appears to be back to being himself.

I think that Rzepczynski is going to be a huge help. He's the kind of reliever the Indians have been really good at rehabbing, and a reliable bullpen lefty is huge.

I agree about Jose. He just plays the game right.

I am also so glad to see Brantley get back to full health. He also plays the game the right way.

Lindor was obviously psyched.

The night before, he could have set the Major League record for most games with 4 extra base hits in a season.

He already has three.

Sunday night, he had three extra-base hits his first 3 at bats but was then walked twice.

Bieber had an "off night". (but geez, he's a rookie)

Great to see him still get the win.

Yeah. Bauer tonight.

What a great feeling to see a decent starting pitcher marched out there every game.

Surgery today has come a long way.

Johnny Venters played for the Braves. He was incredible. Threw in the high nineties with a slider that was unhitable.

He has had four surgeries and came back after being out of baseball for a few years.

Myself. I have had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders.

You can come back.

The question about Salazar is: will he do what is necessary to make it back and will his motion cause more damage?

Complete unknown. He is still young.

We shall see what the Indians will do with him.

Salazar is only signed through this year. Maybe the Indians offer him some security with a reasonable 2 year contract with a 3rd year team option. We'll see.

Cleveland Indians sign Bo Naylor, Ethan Hankins, top two picks in June draft | cleveland.com
https://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ss...ncart_big-photo

KANSAS CITY - The Indians landed the two big fish in their 2018 draft - high school catcher Noah "Bo" Naylor and high school right-hander Ethan Hankins.

Word on Hankins' signing broke early Wednesday when the Indians signed him for above slot value at $2,246,022. Hankins slot value was $2,016,400.

Naylor signed for above slot as well, coming in at $2,578,138. His slot value was $2,333,700.

The 18-year-old Naylor just graduated from St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Mississauga, Ontario. He's a left-handed hitter who played on the Ontario Blue Jays this spring for the Canadian under-18 national team on a tour of big-league spring training camps.

The Indians selected him with the 29th pick in the first round.

Hankins, the 35th pick overall, pitched at Forsyth Central High School in George. The 18-year-old pitcher is 6-6 and 200 pounds.

The Indians also announced the signing of fifth round pick outfielder Steven Kwan from Oregon State; 14th round pick outfielder Korey Hollan from Langham Creek (Texas) High School and 23rd round pick Cody Farhat from Texas Tech University.

The Tribe has signed 32 of the 42 players it drafted last month. They signed all 12 of the players they took in the first 10 rounds. They had a bonus pool of just over $9 million to sign those 12 players.

They can't be too happy about paying Salazar $3.4M last year and $5M this year for essentially nothing. At some point you are throwing good money after bad. It would be nice to see a player have a sense of owing an organization some loyalty, but I can't think of an instance where that has happened. In any case, Salazar has two more years of arbitration-eligibility, so they can tender him if they choose. If I was them I'd tender with a low-end, prove-it type offer, because for all we know he might be a one-pitch pitcher from now on. I have read that throwing the curveball hurts his forearm and elbow, and the split change (his "out-pitch") hurts his shoulder. His fastball is good, but its not Aroldis Chapman-good.

Something semi-momentous happened last night when Cody Allen got the Save. He tied Bob Wickman for the most saves as Indians closer at 139. I was surprised that Wickman held that record, because it didn't seem like he was here all that long, and I thought that Jose Mesa or Doug Jones would have been the all-time save leader for the Indians. On my list of hard-to-watch closers, Wickman is second, after Joe Borowski, and just before Doug Jones. The reason is they all threw slop. Cody, at least, has a major league fastball (94-95) and a really good knuckle-curve (when its working). I like my closer to have a power arm, and despite his meltdown in the 97 WS, Jose Mesa was the most dominant closer I ever saw in his time here. Jose not only threw 97-98 mph gas, he had a killer slider. Of course the slider was his undoing in that 97 WS game because he liked it so much that catcher Sandy Alomar couldn't get him to throw the fastball at crunch time. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Did Adam Schefter just swing and miss or are the Cleveland Indians really invisible?

Paul Hoynes
Cleveland Plain Dealer / cleveland.com

July 3, 2018

KANSAS CITY - Maybe Adam Schefter just swung and missed. It can happen.

Or maybe he was just tweaking the Browns. Perhaps he had a bad experience on Dollar Dog Night at Progressive Field.

Whatever the reason, in the wake of LeBron James' exit from the Cavs, Schefter, ESPN's NFL Insider, Tweeted on Monday "And so now, Cleveland's hopes rest with the Browns."

The Browns? Would that be the 0-16 edition from 2017 that was so bad their head coach was forced to jump into Lake Erie? Or the 1-15 version in 2016?

What that says about the Indians, who went to Game 7 of the World Series in 2016; won an AL best 102 games last year and entered Tuesday night's game against the Royals with a 9 1/2 game lead in the AL Central title, can be taken several ways. A bemused look, a shrug of the shoulders or a revival of Rodney Dangerfield's old take about respect, as in not getting any ... all of them would make sense.

Or it could be something like what appeared on Tribe third baseman Jose Ramirez's Twitter feed on Tuesday. Ramirez, the leading recipient of All-Star votes for AL third basemen, Tweeted "Are we invisible?"

So are the Indians invisible? Are they Cleveland's most successful professional sports team, while being the easiest to forget?

Like the mailman, bag boy at the grocery store or the the friendly lady at the drive thru window at McDonalds. Nice people to be sure, but 10 minutes after you've exchanged pleasantries, you can't remember what they look like.

"I don't think anybody forgets about a club that is in first place and went to the World Series two years ago," said second baseman Jason Kipnis. "It's a hard thing to forget about if you did. It shouldn't be taken too seriously.

"I think we're very comfortable about where we are right now. We've got a good chance of making it back to the postseason. I think we might get there before the Browns."

While other sports are defined by highly-skilled individuals, Mike Clevinger thinks the Indians may suffer some facial recognition because of the team concept they exude.

"Other sports promote individual athletes," said Clevinger. "We're more represented as a team and I kind of like that aspect of us. A lot of sports are about one individual. That's not what the Indians are about. We're more a unit.

"So potentially we may get overlooked in a popularity contest."

Clevinger still thinks Cleveland is a good baseball town.

"It still has that town vibe to every game," said Clevinger. "The people around the ballpark, you can tell they're passing their love for the Indians from generation to generation. That's really cool to see."

Said Rajai Davis, "It is what it is. I guess you've got to make a name for yourself. And then they don't forget like LeBron did. He made a name for himself and now he's moving west. Going to Hollywood. I thought [it] was already Hollywood in Cleveland, but I guess there's another step."

Tyler Naquin missed the Tweet entirely. He doesn't have a Twitter account and didn't really care all that much.

"People can say what they want," he said. "People can write what they want. All I know is I'm here every day trying to get better and help us win games."

Manager Terry Francona did not see the Tweet, but when told about it, he smiled and said, "Obviously, Adam Schefter does not follow baseball a lot. He's the football writer, right?"

As for the Indians being invisible, Francona said, "I wouldn't penalize the fans of Cleveland because Adam Schefter Tweeted something. Who knows, maybe he just whiffed. I wouldn't spend two seconds thinking about that."

The less Schefter talks about the Land and any of its teams, especially the Tribe, the better.

Seems to loaf and only cover football. Just another guy to ignore.

Wahoo! Go, Tribe!

Francisco Lindor stole home on the back-end of a double steal in the 7th. Marked his MLB-leading 77th run of the year -- 10 more than runner-up Mike Trout. Lofton holds the CLE record for more runs (82 in 1994) in a first half.

Down 6-0 in the 8th today. Tito's lineup today with hitters 5-9 being:

5. Brandon Guyer (R) RF
6. Rajai Davis (R) LF
7. Roberto Perez (R) C
8. Erik Gonzalez (R) 2B
9. Greg Allen (S) CF

That might be decent Columbus Clippers lineup, but I'd be PO'd if I paid major league money to see that today.

Lol! I had a a post ready to go about Perez, Gonzalez and Allen being of zero threat to anyone! I got called outside and just said, "Screw it, anyone watching sees the obvious". You definitely saw it!!
