I got to watch both games at our company cafe with about 20 or so Mexican fans. What a tense day for them! Germany probably missed two dozen shots at goal, and then came apart at the end.
Everyone in Mexico is probably running out to buy a Kia today.
From the article... “Soccer fans took their reputation as a passionate community to a new level Sunday when an earthquake tracking agency in Mexico detected an “artificial earthquake” that it said could be linked to World Cup fan celebrations in Mexico.
“The #sismo detected in Mexico City originated artificially,” the agency tweeted, adding that the possible cause of the detection could be “massive jumps during the goal from the Mexico national soccer team.”“
Beast Quake!
That still sends shivers up the spine. Probably the greatest run I have seen. Well, at least in recent memory. I'm sure as a kid I saw Walter Payton and Earl Campbell do some wild runs, but I only remember their body of work rather than a specific play. Nevertheless, a seismic presence was detected in Seattle that day.
I tried to watch some of this, but as soon as I tuned in, my TV fell to the floor for no reason.
Maybe it was emulating it’s favorite euro player after a minor collision. Falling to the ground as though it’d been shot by a sniper. Did it flail around or just lay there?
PortlandDawg...once we move into the Round of 16/QF/SF and Championship match they can't have ties. It now moves into extra time and then, if it is still tied after extra time they will go into the penalty shootouts. Super exciting for fans, but a very cruel elimination process for the losers. Basically, if you think soccer is dull...start watching the matches from Saturday and you may get sucked into the sport that has so far had an estimated 3.4 BILLION viewers around the world! It is definitely the world's sport.
Not everyone was super excited about the set piece that ended Germany's run. The South Korean goal in the 92nd minute all started after a brutal nut shot, which won't make the highlights.
Germany attempted a deep pass near midfield but a Korean guy standing there took it square off the "frontal region" from about 7 feet. The ricochet goes 35-40 feet to a Korean forward, gets an immediate scoring chance that goes off for a corner and then Korea score on the set piece.
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
I watched the Mexico game this morning. They got beat bad, they need to get it in gear and start playing like they mean it. I am rooting for them.
The right side of the Mexico was inept against Sweden. They need to fix it if they are going to advance to the QF. They also lost a player due to Yellow cards and one of Sweden's goals was an unfortunate own goal by Mexico. They looked off the entire game, which isn't like them.
Senegal, Colombia or Japan? Who do England want to play? Will this influence how they play today? I hope not. I hope their mentality is to win. Belgium are in many people's final bracket, especially with Germany gone and Argentina barely advancing. If England compete well, tie or even beat Belgium that will give them a massive confidence boost.
Also, in my mind...you can't do what France and Denmark did (looked pretty obvious they had a mutual agreement and were happy where they finished)...if you are in the World Cup you have to believe you can beat anybody. To over think things and try and maneuver an easier path to the final seems stupid and dangerously arrogant.
Well...we now enter the Round of 16. It is win or go home...no ties allowed. Extra time and penalty shootouts will determine games. Some great matches are now set beginning on Saturday. I love the World Cup!
England v Colombia. France v Argentina Belgium v Japan Uruguay v Portugal Spain v Russia Denmark v Croatia Brazil v Mexico Sweden v Switzerland
Who is the dark horse? Croatia look really good....don't count them out. But, the Danes have a great goalkeeper. That could be a good match.
I have a couple questions about this next round...how good are Uruguay? Suarez is great, but their group wasnt very good. We will find out as Portugal are no slouches. I think France will beat Argentina. But...on paper, Argentina are better than they have performed. Have they found their groove? And, Switzerland are pretty solid while Sweden lost (only just) to a lousy German side and benefited from a lackluster Mexican performance. Can they beat the Swiss?
England v Colombia France v Argentina Belgium v Japan Uruguay v Portugal Spain v Russia Denmark v Croatia Brazil v Mexico Sweden v Switzerland
Pretty solid predictions, I could see MAYBE Portugal being able to pull an upset here.
Portugal winning should not be considered as an upset as they are the reigning Euro champions. However, this should be a severe test for Portugal (who I hope wins) as Uruguay has an excellent defense and also can score. I predict ( ) either a 1-1 or scoreless draw with penalty kicks being the decider. France I expect to beat Argentina who has really underwhelmed so far...
When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the losers...Socrates

I have France over Argentina. France is just stacked with talent. I'd like the young Three Lions team to win the first round of the knockout stage. Belgium, and its golden generation, is my dark horse team to win it all. Denmark v Croatia should be fun. Brazil will beat Mexico (regardless which Mexico team shows up). Sweden v Switzerland should also be fun. Uruguay v Portugal is a toss up.
Messi and Ronaldo entered the WC as, arguably, the two best players in the world. Messi's on a plane home to Argentina and Ronaldo is now fighting to keep his team alive in the tournament. That's the beauty of the World Cup.
Belgium, and its golden generation, is my dark horse team to win it all.
I don't think Belgium are a dark horse. I think they are potential favorite and were going into the Cup.
Don't write Croatia off, they could be a legit dark horse. But, kudos to Uruguay today. They have thus far only conceded 1 goal the whole tournament and beating Portugal gives them cred as going into the Portugal match there were definite questions about the competition they have played. They definitely earned their place in the QF.
France need to tighten up their defense...the France v Uruguay game could be an awesome match up.
Watching the Uruguay / Portugal game, on fast forward, the first setting. This is the way to watch this sport.
You're crazy! That was a great game and Uruguay played serious defense! Portugal possessed the ball 61% of the time yet, they couldn't penetrate Uruguay's defense. And, Ronaldo took 6 shots, only 1 was on target. All credit to Uruguay.
France v Argentina was very exciting with a lot of goals but somebody forgot to alert the defenses to show up. Saying that, two of those goals were spectacular and another was scored on a penalty. But, my guess is if Americans are wary of the sport and think it is slow...today's France v Argentina would be a good one to watch.
