If I was 30 years younger, I'd prob get busted on a stalking charge.... total "Stage Door Johnny."
A friend hooked me up to Paste Magazine some years back. They were supercool, in that each issue that arrived in the mailbox came accompanied by a CD on the back page: a grab bag of artists deserving of wider notice.
Here's the slice of Espy they served up. Dude.... Instantly smitten. So fresh. So uncomplicated/complex. So sophisticated.
Damn, man.... damn.
p.s. When I posted this, I wondered how long it would be until I heard from you or Portland...
I thought someone might add Lena Horne to this thread. She had a pretty good damn voice. She was also beautiful and was one of the first African American's to stand up for herself in both the musical and movie industries. In fact, Horne had a stipulation w/her movie contract to not portray domestic workers in movies, which was typical for black women in that era.
Her trademark song Stormy Weather is a good example of how defiant she could be. She is totally unhappy w/this relationship and you can hear the emotion in her voice as she sings it.
Seems like I am having a conversation w/myself at this point.
But, I love the topic and am hopeful that some will join in.
This entry is more blues than jazz, but I think the two are related. And yeah, I know I am not a musical expert and there are major differences, but for me.........who is just a dude who loves the "soul" of both jazz and the blues, this s.... works.
I had high hopes for this thread, but it didn't take off. Oh well...
Here is something newer:
I believe this girl is Dutch and I like her because she kinda sings like the old-school female jazz artists. It's really catchy if you give it a chance. And the band is pretty damn professional, too.
