I don't normally start threads - or maybe this topic was covered in the not too distant past......
Regardless:
But with the passing of Ellison and because I was inspired by watching the Carpenter flick before coming to work, I figured I'd put my Sci-Fi affairs in order before it was too late.
1- Blade Runner (original) 2- Alien ('79) 3- The Thing ('84) 4- 2001 5- Solaris (yes, the U.S. version)

How many books are there? Watched a bit, and it seems well done. Interested, but uninformed for now.
I thought it was 6 books, but now thinking it's 7. In order for a better understanding, you need to read them in order. James S.A. Corey is the author...

Sorry, didn't see that Solaris was already mentioned. Good movie though.
Someone mentioned The Expanse. I have been trying to get into it, and it has some interesting moments, but it's not as good as any of the Star Trek series, Battlestar Galactica, Dr Who, Firefly, Quantum leap, or Babylon 5.

Also, I loved the movie The Martian .... that's a great concept/movie

Speaking of time travel, this would be a good time to mention writer, Richard Matheson, who wrote a novel called Bid Time Return which was made into a movie called Somewhere in Time. I think it starred Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves. Matheson might be the most prolific writer in Hollywood history. He wrote countless screenplays and teleplays, some of which were based on his novels. His novels were turned into movies such as I Am Legend, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Legend of Hell House, and several others. He wrote countless teleplays for the Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Outer Limits, Night Gallery, as well as cult favorite The Night Stalker and its sequel, The Night Strangler. As a young man, one my favorite things was browsing a used book store in Parma (American Book and News on Ridge Rd @ Snow Rd) for books and stories by Matheson and contemporaries of his like Jack Finney, Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, and Ira Levin. I really admired their brevity of style, and thought that if I could write, I would want to write like they did. Anyway, check out Matheson's Wiki page below for a list of his many writing credits for movies, TV movies, and TV shows that you might not have known were from him ...
I was stuck inside for a bit with my DVD collection, and I was throwing on the Sci-Fi stuff due to medicine and nostalgia I suppose.
I came out of it really struck by certain scenes accompanied by the score.
Blade = Vangelis with the flying or Sean Young scenes. Alien = Nostromo getting into orbit around the LV planet. 2001 = Enough said. Solaris U.S. = Check it out again with the purple space ribbons.
Ellison spoke at my college in '93. I didn't put this in the RIP thread (don't speak ill of the dead, etc), but he hit on my girlfriend and gave me the stink eye before his paid speech.
Was Last Starfighter the one with the mega weapon, the BFG finish? Wowed me when I saw it and hearth name? Was it the Death Blossom? Something like that, I believe.
I didn't list it, but MIGHT qualify. How about Rcky Horror Picture Show which camps up the whole B movie tradition. Loved the cult stuff when younger.
Mildly kidding while doing the Time Warp mentally. LOL

Portland, that was incredible! Thank you. IT was great on big screen. This weapon also showed up as a weapon mention in a novel (newer SF) that I was reading earlier today. Kind of death blossom legacy on some odd level.
I am a sucker for some of the weaponry in SF, especially in space opera. And the hand guns/ foot soldier stuff has always grabbed me.
This was swell. Thanks again!
