http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-browns-mcginestsurgery&prov=ap&type=lgnsBrowns linebacker Willie McGinest scheduled for back surgery, will miss 6 weeks By TOM WITHERS, AP sports Writer August 9, 2007 BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Browns linebacker Willie McGinest was scheduled to have back surgery Thursday and will miss at least six weeks, another blow to a Cleveland team decimated by major injuries the past few seasons. McGinest, who has made 159 starts during a 13-year NFL career, was to have the operation in Los Angeles. ADVERTISEMENT After a week of rest following the procedure on a bulging disk, he'll begin rehab and the Browns will re-evaluate McGinest in six weeks, coach Romeo Crennel said. The 35-year-old McGinest signed as a free agent before last season after winning three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. Losing McGinest wasn't the only blow on Thursday for the Browns. Backup linebacker Matt Stewart had surgery to repair a torn muscle in his left shoulder and will likely be placed on injured reserve. Crennel said inside linebacker Chaun Thompson will move to the outside. Thompson started 15 games for the Browns at outside linebacker in 2005. Antwan Peek worked with Cleveland's first-team defense during practice. McGinest has been dealing with back issues for several seasons. Earlier this week he asked the Browns for permission to see his personal physician in California. Crennel said there are no immediate plans to put McGinest on injured reserve. "He's going to come back and we're going to try to get him ready to play the rest of the season," he said. "Backs are backs and they are fickle sometimes. But after the first six weeks we'll see how the rehab is going and that will be an indicator as how soon he'll be back."

I'm excited with this in the sense that Antwan Peak will get to play, and I have extremely high hopes for him..
I feel bad for Willie and Matt, but if this launches Peak into the starting role I am PUMPED our pass rush will be so much better with Peak and Wimbley starting.

I think we'll be fine in pass rush regardless, but in our defense, where having a deep linebacking corps is very important, this is definitely a blow.

I have had back problems for the past 2 years. Willie and I are the same age. I have 3 bulging disc and 1 herniation. I had laser surgury 2 weeks ago. I hope he recovers and rehabs nicely. Good luck Willie!

Can't say I didn't see this coming from Keith Hernandez McGinest. Guy has been a train wreck since we signed him. Call it a bonus if he does play for us this year.

We have depth at linebacker. Willie's only value is as a mentor to Wimbly plus others, he can still do that on the sidelines.
I suspect people will start crying on this thread about the "Cleveland curse" but I see this as no big deal. I didn't even know Stewart was on the team still...

Ah, but THIS time we were prepared with Peek. Last season Willie had some trouble and we had no one to take his place.
Another indication of the depth we are building.

Lets hope Peek is ready for the task.

Doesn't matter to me too much. He wasn't good last year and quite frankly if Peek is anywhere close to what Tucker says, we're in good shape opposite Wimbley.
If I heard "Wimbley heading to IR" I'd pretty much pack the season in at this point...

Yeah with the depth we have at linebacker now I doubt Stewart would see the field much.. at worst it affects our special teams. Willie will be back, in the meantime we have younger, (hopefully?) talented players that are going to get to show if they can be our future OLB

Surgery sidelines McGinest, Stewart Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 08.09.2007 The Browns are down two veteran outside linebackers due to injury -- one likely for the season and one for at least the next six weeks. Willie McGinest was set to have surgery in California Thursday afternoon to repair a bulging disc in his back. Browns Coach Romeo Crennel said McGinest would be re-evaluated after about six weeks of recovery and rehab and hopefully return to action by the end of the regular season's first month. Matt Stewart had his torn labrum surgically repaired Thursday morning. Crennel said the team would probably place Stewart on injured-reserve, though no move has been made yet. Anwtan Peek moves up the depth chart and into McGinest's place as the starting left outside linebacker. Peek, signed in March after playing four years in Houston, had been projected as a rotation player who would share time with McGinest and provide athleticism and pass-rush ability from the perimeter on third downs. Peek, who has 23 career starts under his belt, came to the Browns with a very high recommendation from defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who was on the Texans' staff for Peek's first two years in the NFL. Peek started all 16 games in 2005 but played out of position last year as the Texans switched to a 4-3 base defense. Chaun Thompson should also find a permanent home on the outside in the absence of McGinest and Stewart. Thompson started 15 games at outside linebacker for the Browns in 2005 but mostly played inside last season. Thompson did see some time as an edge rusher last season and moved to the outside earlier this week when McGinest first experienced back pain. David McMillan -- a third-year player who has 1 tackle in 14 career games -- will likely compete with Thompson for playing time over the next few weeks. Summer signee Jason Short has also seen time at outside linebacker in camp. McGinest started 13 games last year, his first with the Browns. Stewart made 12 starts in 2005 and four last season while also seeing significant time on special teams. Crennel said the Browns will play Saturday's preseason opener against Kansas City without guard Eric Steinbach (knee), defensive end J'Vonne Parker (concussion), offensive lineman Isaac Sowells (concussion), cornerback DeMario Minter (foot). Veteran defensive end Orpheus Roye has missed the last week-plus while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, and cornerback Gary Baxter (knees) has yet to take part in full-speed drills. Crennel said wide receiver Tim Carter (hamstring) and defensive back Kenny Wright (groin) are doubtful for Saturday. To make room on the roster following Brady Quinn's signing Tuesday, the Browns waived-injured running back Jerome Jackson, an undrafted rookie from Michigan. Jackson cleared waivers and was placed on the injured-reserve list. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=7064

I loved Peek when I saw him at training camp - he shows great burst and can get to the QB. BUT, I do fear that Peek is a guy who will wear down a lot during games, especially if RBs pick on him. I'd almost rather see Chaun Thompson start and play on 1st and 2nd, then bring in Peek for obvious passing situations.

The Injury bug is starting to hit and its not good. This may be good because I think we all thought Peek would take over for Mcginest next year. I just hope that Peek learned alot from him during their time together. Also like the article says Thompson should see some time and Iv heard some things that say hes doing better. I wouldnt be suprised to see Leon in there at outside quite a bit this season.

No offense, but no way. Peek has really been impressing in camp and Thompson has never proven to be a linebacker of mention, while Peek has earned nine sacks in a single season. Personally the losses of Stewart and McGinnest dont mean much to me other than the fact that we lost depth. I would rather see Peek start over McGinnest anyway.

Could be a blessing in disguise. Willie McGinest isn't the playmaker he used to be. When a LB gets a certain age, their performance on the field starts to go south fast. McGinest didn't showcase alot last year. Its not like he was going find a "fountain of youth" in 2007. With McGinest out for 6 weeks or more, now the Browns get a little bit more faster and atheletic at LB. I wouldn't be surprised if Willie calls it a career sooner than later..... I mean when he returns from surgery, how effective is he really gonna be? He's 35 and not getting any better.

Quit your bitchin'... none of these players want to be hurt and out of the lineup. They will play when able...until then it is pre season and these things occur. My guess is that all will be back soon except for McGinest whose time has come and gone.

How am I bitchin, I just made the observation that we are starting to get injuries and to some key players, like steinbach and now Mcginest. Plus we lost Stewart who is a quality backup for the season.
Excuse me!!

Stewart wouldnt have made the team anyways. Its a shame that he will count against the salary cap. He will be cut at the end of the season once he passes a physical, like McCutchen last season. thats if he even has any time on his contract.
I wouldnt be upset if the same happens to McGinnest.
The Browns have alot of good young depth that Im satisfied with. This might help Unck make the team.

I'd like to see them give Leon a shot there myself, and keep CT on the inside. He has the pure physical ability to be a beast on that side, and the problems he has with instincts won't be nearly as noticable as they are on the ILB spot..........also his lack of insincts aren't any worse that CT's out there. He has all the ability to be a beast of a OLB, and I would prefer to see a guy who might be a long term solution out there get a shot rather than a guy who was already out there and failed.............wish RAC felt that way..lol.

I know peek was gna blow up and be something at houston but I also think that Thompson has finally settled in and will be as ready as he will ever be after being in a D for multiple years. I could see him starting 1st and 2nd downs and have peek come in on 3rd downs. The other option would be to move Leon to the outside and have peek rush ond 3rd downs and Keep CT in the middle. Maybe I'm not putting enough faith in Peek but I just see a lot of potention especially in Williams. I also think that CT will be ready to step up and play this year.
Meh.

Why does everyone still think Leon is going to be moved outside? He is a beast on the inside and provides the quickness andtenacity that Davis lacks. I can't wait to see Wimbley, Peek, and Leon all coming on a blitz. Wow, the thought just made me tear up!

Peek is a beast. He will probably start off the season as the nickel rusher, but I expect big things out of him.
Was it here I was reading that the Browns have experimented with Andra at the SOLB and then Leon at SILB? Andra's actually a really good blitzer, that package intrigues me.

While it sucks, I wasn't really counting on "huge" contributions from McGinest this year. He certainly does his best and does add something to the defense, we had to expect that his age would catch up with him.
And, we have to remember that if he's going to miss six weeks, that's only 2 regular season games. If he is able to play between 10 and 14 games for us in the regular season, I think that would be pretty good.
As for Stewart, I don't really remember seeing him too much last year anyway. We can use the depth, but he wasn't a vital cog, IMHO.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism
