England versus Columbia today. Should be a tough game...I hope the Union Jack prevails. Sorry to be pedantic, but...the St. George's Cross is the flag of England. The Union Jack is the national flag for the UK. I agree, however....I hope England advance to the QF. I think if they get past Colombia they have a good chance of making it to the semi! Last time England made it to the semi was 1990 against West Germany who they lost to in penalties! One game at a time, however.

So....first half of Switzerland v Sweden was a definite snoozefest. And, I say that as a fan of soccer and the WC! Belgium v Japan was also 0-0 at halftime, however, their was so much action, defense and attacks that it was exciting even if no shots landed. And, the second half of that game was simply incredible.
Hopefully the 2nd half of Sweden v Switzerland is half as exciting as Belgium v Japan because it definitely needs an energy boost.

Ok, I admit that match was painfully dull. The 3 minutes of stoppage time were the most exciting and energetic minutes of the game! The one goal only went in because it was deflected off a Swiss defender. Pretty much sums up the game. But, at least I was able to I revamp my website while it was on in the background.
If Sweden play like that in the QF both England and Colombia should be able to easily get to the semis!

I knew I was wrong, but simply in too much of a hurry... . If they get past columbia, they have a very good chance to make it to the final!

The pace and physicality of this first half is night and day between the earlier Sweden/Swiss game. It's getting very chippy out there. I think we will see a red card, or two, before it's over.

This game is out of control. Someone is going to get redcarded soon.

Colombia playing dirty...England are getting caught up in it and both teams are trying to take advantage of a weak ref. Not good football. Just finish this...England will advance and play Sweden on Sat.

I have nightmares of England losing to Argentina and Germany in penalty shootouts.
Their manager, Gareth Southgate, missed an absolute heartbreaker in, I think, 1998?

My wife, who is English, was in tears when they won it! Good word to use! I couldn't watch the extra time (and expected shootout) so I left the house to do running around - grocery store, drugstore. Too much for an old man to take...

Here's the next round:
Uruguay v France Brazil v Belgium England v Sweden Croatia v Russia 6 of 8...nicely done, sir. I'm going with: France Brazil (although I'm seriously cheering for Belgium) England Croatia, ...with England meeting France in the final.

...with England meeting France in the final. That would be amazing and full of heated passion as there is so much history that stretches centuries of war and intellectual/cultural rivalry between both nations. I do believe England can beat Sweden in the QF and meet either Croatia or Russia in the semi.

No games today! I think I'm having WC withdrawal symptoms... Nor tomorrow. BUT, we will be rewarded on Friday and Saturday. When you get to the QF stage the matches really should be competitive and exciting. Thus far this has been a tremendous WC. I can only think of two games that were dreadful...France v Denmark (both clearly fine with their group placement) and Sweden v Switzerland. Maybe the England v Belgium game too as both sides were playing their "B" teams. But, on the whole it's been a fan-bloody-tastic World Cup!

I think France v Uruguay will be interesting. Offensively France look deadly (especially Mbappe), but their defense has been suspect. Meanwhile Uruguay have a stout defense. Can they stop Mbappe?
Same with England v Sweden. Sweden's defense have allowed them to beat France, Holland and Italy in the qualifying rounds. Can they stop Kane from scoring? At the moment Kane is on track for the Golden Boot!
Can't wait!

Same here! Both games tomorrow have the potential to be excellent. I believe France will have a difficult time penetrating into the box and will to rely on the counter-attack quick strike or free kick set plays. I think that Uruguay will try to neutralize Mbappe. The Belgium/Brazil match I expect to see a few goals. I pick Brazil to win 4-2 or 4-3, but I am pulling for Belgium...

France's Griezmann's ball skills and footwork are superb. One of the best to watch. He is a great dribbler, but his passing is often perfectly placed for a targeted strike.

Man, they want to blame the goalkeeper for that, but that shot had some knuckleball action on it.

Man, they want to blame the goalkeeper for that, but that shot had some knuckleball action on it. I'm watching on a British tv stream (ITV) and the commentators were brutal in their assessment and criticism. They were saying things you would never hear on an American sports commentator say. But, let's be honest...the goalkeeper has to catch that. It's a moving target...you can't push it away and not have it backfire on you.

That shot started to his left, and then knuckled back to his right. He had to change directions and was lucky to get his hands on it at all. It looked like just a straight shot, but when you saw it in slow-mo, it really had some pretty wicked movement.
