It is absolutely Trump's fault! His rhetoric toward immigrants from mexico, south america and s-hole countries just empowers the bigots to come out of hiding and target anyone who doesn't look like them. It's happening all over. youtube is full of recent videos on this. And people have been shamed for doing it.

I disagree to some extent it is definitely his fault. His combative nature is reflected on ignorant people. We saw the same this with Obama when he started reflecting statements that were critical of Police departments. Attitude reflects leadership, Barry caused some issues and Trump is definitely causing some. At least Barrack wasn't so god damn inflammatory about seemingly inane topics.

Trump rhetoric is out of control, it's entirely clear that it cannot be controlled which is dangerous. On a lot of issues I am with Trump on policy but his speech is more and more dangerous both because of his base AND the over reaction of the Anti Trump base. He is literally riling up both sides, which usually ends in bloodshed.

BpG, I think I agree with the basic idea behind your post, but I disagree with your conclusion.

I think ignorant people are ignorant. I don't think Trump made them this way. Dumb people doing dumb things today was set into motion long before Trump lost the popular vote. :-p

So taking that into account, I don't think it's Trump's fault that racism/racist attacks. He's certainly not helping, and he might even push some people that are racist, but not "actively" racist to be "actively" racist. My point is those people were racist to begin with. Racism is THE problem, whether people try to hide it or not.

There are a couple things I'd like to point out from this article.

1. Hate crimes have been on the rise since before Trump was elected.
1a. I did NOT miss the link to the story in this article about the jump in hate crimes the day Trump was elected. Still, overall, I think my point stands.

2. Hate crime stats are based on incomplete data. The FBI relies on reports from local/state jurisdictions to crunch the data on a yearly basis. I believe the article said a majority of departments don't report. This skews the data (how it's skewed, the article doesn't say and I doubt that we know).
2a. Additionally, the article mentions that hate crime data for certain populations (certain races, religions... they specifically mention the transgender community) are under/mis-reported. So not only is data missing from large parts of the country, but data is also skewed/missing specific to certain groups.

It's not Trump's fault that racism formed. However he has done a great job of normalizing the behavior. People feel emboldened by the words he said. Charlottesville clarified his rhetoric for me. When he called nazi's good people, it clicked for me in a clear way: To support Donald Trump is to support white nationalism. This is because Donald Trump himself supports white nationalism and does not reject people who support such an ideology.

Wow! That was very disturbing. That dude looked like a weakling and a coward while he was harassing that woman. And the cop just stood there.

I think it's clear that Hispanics are facing a ton of bias, hate, and discrimination right now. And I believe Trump's stance on these people has empowered coward racists like that jerk in the video.

For the last 5 years, I've worked in a Puerto Rican neighborhood doing tax returns.

Everyone I worked with on a daily basis was Puerto Rican.

95% of the tax returns I did were for Puerto Ricans.

I was the only Caucasian in the office.

Everybody was too busy working to worry about bias, hate, discrimination or "empowered coward racists".

That's like made-up TV stuff.

That's not what's happening in the real world.

We didn't have time (or desire) to sit in front of a TV all day.

We had work to do. Money to earn.

We got it, Rocky. Racism, prejudice, bias, hate-crimes, etc against groups of people are not a real thing and only appear in fictionalized television.

If you use the word spade in reference to a black person, your damn right that's offensive. If you use it in reference to a shovel it's not. See, context means everything.

Thanks for sharing the video of the old drunk white dude. Well he sounded drunk to me at least. He could just be old too I guess. I don't think it's fair to hold modern generations to that of the old timers when it comes to being racist. I mean they grew up with racist being the norm. Some have changed but many have not. I don't think many born from the late 70's and onwards are very racist in general. There is still some out there but man it's way better than it used to be.

Puerto Ricans have a unique problem and I think it's mostly their own fault because they refuse to become a full state and prefer to remain a territory instead because they gain many benefits that way.

My best freind growing up was puerto rican and I grew up with his Mama's cooking. We fought and bled together for each other many times over the years and I love him and his family to death. In general I love all puerto ricans because they are a very nice and kind people. I just love em!

But many people out of ignorance mostly see them as a foreign country and not as part of America. I mean we don't call them Americans now do we? No we call them Puerto Ricans and they do too. Most I have known always claim to be Puerto Rican first and foremost. It can lead the general public to view them as foreigners because of that mindset and the fact that they are not an official state just yet.

I'm not saying it's OK but just saying it's understandable about some not knowing or being confused about it.

I also hate how slow things are moving to help puerto rico recover. It really disgust me. I hope as they rebuild though that they find a way to build with stronger buildings when possible.

Any word can be offensive then. What if I decide to start calling black people lamp posts. "Hey OCD, look at that lamp post walking down the street."

Only stupid people get offended by words. Or liberal snowflakes.

That's funny. I see conservatives on this very board get offended on a consistent basis because, "liberals label them".
