Browns try out CFL defensive back Jordan Holland

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...-jordan-holland

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Cleveland spent the day working out former CFL defensive back Jordan Holland, according to a source.

Holland most recently spent time with the Edmonton Eskimos and is the son of 49ers aide Johnny Holland, who served as Browns linebackers coach under defensive coordinator Ray Horton in 2016. The younger Holland is familiar with Cleveland, having played with the Arena Football League's Gladiators in 2017, recording six tackles and one interception in his time there.

Holland, 23, is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound cover man who played his college ball at Prairie View A&M before going undrafted.

The Browns have overhauled their secondary this offseason, drafting cornerback Denzel Ward in the first round, signing E.J. Gaines and Justin Currie and trading for safety Damarious Randall.

Is somebody you listed there not working out for some reason? Or injured? Hope he is NFL good!!

Are there "camp CB's"?

Surprised The Raiders and Jets didn't throw in the 3rd for Beal when they won the lottery slotting.

Good for the Giants... Now on to...

yeah I remember something about the lottery when we got Kosar we traded for another teams lottery combined with our own had the overwhelming advantage of being the one to get the first pick! Something like that...do you all remember?

It was the Bills, IIRC.

Pretty good read explaining how everything went down...

http://www.news-herald.com/article/HR/20150415/NEWS/150419716

"The Buffalo Bills had the first pick in 1985 and signed defensive end Bruce Smith weeks before the draft. The Vikings wanted to draft Kosar in the regular draft, so on April 9 they traded two picks to the Houston Oilers for the second pick. The Browns in March tried to trade for the Oilers pick, but the Oilers wouldn’t deal because they did not want to hand Kosar to an AFC Central Division rival.

Accorsi trumped what the Vikings did later on April 9 when he traded the Browns’ first pick in 1985, their third-round pick in 1985, their first-round pick in 1986 and their sixth-round pick in 1986 to the Bills for Buffalo’s first-round pick in the 1985 supplemental draft. Since the Bills had the worst record in 1984 they had the first pick in the supplemental draft as well as the regular draft."

Man...talk about having the stones to support your belief in a player. Bernie Kosar worked. Ricky Williams did not. Great reminder of how that went down.

Wasn't there a fair amount of controversy in pulling off that move? (Yup, the fact that Kosar bypassed the regular draft to be selected in the supplemental). He wanted to go to the Browns, and the two conspired together to make it happen.

This type of thing would set the league on fire these days.

Thanks, saved me some serious typing as i knew we traded a bunch of picks to the supplemental pick.

It wasn't long after we did that that a rule was put in place that teams can't trade supplemental picks

he could of easily been a Viking. Accorsi received like the football Nobel prize for that move and to this day has respect from all!

FWIW ...

3. CLE - Cleveland had interest in Sam Beal

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

New York Giants CB Sam Beal was believed to be a target for the Cleveland Browns during the supplemental draft. It is not known which round the Browns placed a bid on him, but it probably was the third round, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants were clearly feeling more pressure for this move than the Browns. Beal is likely to be brought along a little slowly, but for the most part he should be a solid player in a year or two.

I figured we'd bid on him (and figured it'd be a 3rd) ... but the second we didn't win the lottery it basically meant he'd be gone

I'm totally okay with having missed on Beal. I mean... it's not that hard to keep your grades up and credits and when you fail to do that as a college athlete (who is, let's be real, probably given some extra slack and some extra forgiveness with some stuff) means the kid just didn't care or have a gram of push/drive/motivation. It didn't even phase him obviously.

That alone was enough for me, although from what I've read and etc - I still would've thrown a third on him had he been available. There wasn't any criminal or any flags I saw with him, just the enormous question mark with his motivation.

Giants cornerback Sam Beal who was chosen in the supplemental draft is out for the year with a shoulder injury per source. Big hit for this Giants defense.

Yikes.

Maybe we dodged a bullet there.

I would say so. The thinking was he would need some time to be ready for the NFL, now it will be longer.

To add to @diannaESPN's report: Giants CB Sam Beal got tangled with a teammate during yesterday's practice, and shoulder popped out. Bad luck.

Sounds like something that would happen to us. I guess it was good we missed the coin flip or lottery for the order.
