My dad, in Florida, received some sort of phone call claiming to be from the police department. They claimed that I was in some sort of accident, and that I was in need of $50,000 so I could be treated. They actually went to the bank, before deciding to call me. He was shocked when I was home.

The person on the phone told him to not worry my family, and that I didn't want him to call anyone else. crazy

They almost gave away $50,000 to these scammers. My stepmom has a huge heart, and she sometimes goes all heart with no real thought about what she's doing.

Anyway, just let your loved ones know that these kind of scams are out there.

I KNEW you'd have this same story because the exact same thing happened in my family ... someone called my grandma and said my mom was in trouble and needed funds for treatment ASAP.

They attack elderly people who aren't technologically savvy.

Good post to warn others!

(Obviously this particular post is a joke, and no one should send money to this address, If you want to send me money, I'll privately give you my PayPal info.) rofl

The original post on this thread is no joke though, as my step mother was distraught and inconsolable. My dad was also all freaked out. It is revolting that people put our seniors through this kind of crap. The sad thing is that if 10 people make 100 calls a week, and they get 1 person to send them the money, They split $50,000.

People like this should face life in prison. They could kill a senior with this kind of crap.

I despise scammers and especially those who plot to take money from the elderly or those who are grieving.

One of the most despicable acts is when a thief scans the Obituaries, finds out the day and time of the funeral, and then robs the house of the grieving family. It's beyond sad to have to ask someone to watch your home just so you can attend a loved one's funeral.

That happened to my great uncle, back in 76 or 77, when my great aunt passed. He lived out in the country, just over the Ohio/PA state line, on a farm. Someone broke in and stole his top end electronics equipment, and his guns. It was, as you so accurately described, despicable.

However, the thieves tried to pawn the stuff, but my uncle had engraved his name on everything, and the shop called the police.

My grandparents were swindled out of 10’s of thousands of dollars by a church deacon at their church in Florida. There’s scum in every pond. Careful out there.

There are, unfortunately, a lot of people who have somehow felt that it was just fine to use their positions of authority in the church to cheat others. The Bible tells us that those in authority in the church will be held to a higher standard at judgement. I would hate to be in that person's shoes. I also believe that "prosperity preachers" will also have a hard time standing before the Lord, especially those who happily "steal widows' houses", which Jesus specifically spoke against during His ministry.

It is amazing that some people will stop at nothing to get "free" money.

Well, actually I guess it's not that amazing.

There's plenty of people who will kill you for your money if they think there's a good chance they won't be punished.

Happens a lot every day. (15,000 murders a year in U.S.)(41 every day)

Good thing they did call you before they sent the money. You can't trust anyone now days. There was a guy here locally that has been in all kinds of trouble with the law and he posted a video on line saying his wife had died from cancer and that his mom had passed away recently and that he was stuck caring for his young children and was requesting people donate money to him. Truth be told his wife and mother were both alive and well and it was all just a scam.

Fortunately, they did call before they sent the money.

My dad left us when I was 10, and my brothers were 6. We finally re-connected as a family, and both he and my step-mom have a lot of guilt. She wanted to contact us, but he was ashamed. I have no doubt that this played a part in it. My step-mom is also very emotional. She thinks with her heart, instead of more rational thought. This makes them both a real target for anything like this kind of scam.

Did you get the IRS Calling telling you that the Police will be arriving soon if you don't pay up right now?

They don't want your credit card or checking account. They want you to get something like Apple pay or something along those lines..

Man, how things have changed... once upon a time, the craziest call you could ever imagine was someone asking "is your refrigerator running?"

Another scam [that has various motives] is when you get a call on your cell phone and the number is your very own.

This happened to my wife, son, daughter, and I w/in a few hours of each other recently. My wife and daughter answered. My son and I did not.

My wife got a message that said it was from AT&T [our cell provider] and they asked about account information and banking info. She hung up.

My daughter answered and hung up.

My son and did not answer the call.

I went online and read about it. It's a scam. Some try to get banking info. Others are trying to get personal information. All want to steal your money.

I read how some people answered because they thought they were getting "a call from their future selves," as in mystic. LOL

Just know that caller ID is not always reliable. It's a damn scam and my advice to you is to not answer.

I can see it working - people see their own number, are told it is their provider and think "well who else could be calling me from my own number?"

Bottom line is you have to be 100% skeptical because 99.9% of the time someone is flat-out asking for cash or banking information - it's a scam.

I keep getting this voicemail, Ive been getting it for like a year now, about once a month, havent called the number, the first time I got it, it scared me:

“And once again expired after that you will be taken under custody by the local police as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this moment we would request you to get back to us so that we can discuss about this case before taking any legal action against you the number to reach us is __9-800-4218 I repeat 929-800-4218 thank you…”

The first thing I do when I have the name of a company or a phone number is google the info plus the word "scam"... in this case "929-800-4218 scam". Below is one of the sites where your specific scam is discussed.

https://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/9298004218

It's a quick way to find out whether a company or call is legit or not.

What sucks is that the National Do Not Call Registry is a complete joke and waste of taxpayer money. I've reported at least 50 scam or spam numbers and nothing has ever been done to stop them. I have the infamous "something is wrong with your computer" people that have called me non-stop, sometimes multiple times a day, for about 8 years now. At this point I just have fun with them... tell them I live on a desert... or a boat... or I'm blind and can't use a computer. Funny but not funny.

Is there a "BpG Don't Call List"?

I hate scammers. Constantly warning my wife and my parents. The scammers have been working our zip codes pretty hard recently.

Cautious, y'all!

I use an app on my phone, Robokiller. It does a great job of screening the calls and blocking them. It will answer the call with it's own recorded messages. The spam callers get caught talking to a recording, and it records the calls it answers for you to listen to later. They can be quite amusing while you feel like your fighting back on this garbage.

LOL For me that would be the first clue something was wrong. Seeing me calling me should be a blatant sign that this is a scam or spoof or whatever they call it.

I'm not worried that one of these is going to catch me.. I'm aware of them so I'm cautious.

But I worry about my Mom in Law who is 85..Now she's whip smart so it won't be easy to get her but you know how it is, any given day it could be the day that it happens.

My Mom, 92, is another target.. But she's in a nursing home and all her assets are tied up.. she couldn't give them anything if she wanted too..

I work in a bank and we have had customers fall for the Microsft scam and send money to get a virus off their computer. One almost paid it twice and finally asked us about it which we told her it was a scam.

I think one seriously sick scam is calling an elderly person claiming to be their grandson(daughter), stating they are in jail and they need X amount of dollars to get. They say please don't tell Mom or Dad. I had a teller approach me suspecting an elderly customer who was very nervous and WD a few thousand dollars may have been in the process of a scam.

I tried my best to question her about the reason for the funds and making small talk. I live in a small town so I knew the woman. Unfortunately I was unable to get more information and from WD the cash. I pray it was for legit reasons.

Thanks for the app. Looking it up for my wife's phone. Can it work on a home landline as well? I don't know how to go about that. We are retired and the calls keep coming.

Haven't posted on this board in a long time. I'm been around here and there.

I almost fell for a scam in the mid 2000. Some dude called claiming to work for the police and asking for donations. Something about supporting the K9s. First he was asking for a 35$ donation. I was tight on cash at the time so I told him no. Then he said he could take as low as 5$. I told him sure. He asked for my info but before I gave it to him, my wife called and I told him to hang on. I was telling my wife about it and she was like tell that dude thanks but no thanks. I clicked back over and the call was gone.

Since then been getting similar calls. I started to not answer phones and let the voicemail pick up. if anyone that's important leave a message then I'll call back. I did answer one by mistake because I was waiting on a call (2016). Same police scam but different story. I played with him a bit.

I did get one about a warrant for my arrest lol. Also there's one about a tax file number. I'll look into robokiller.

It’s sad.

We have a family friend who has lost it and become victim of scammers.

4000 one time 500 another and it goes on. Her daughter has changed the bank accounts around to protect her, but now she is lying and misleading as well. She can’t remember how to pay a bill.

She needs supervision or put into a care facility. But we are the involved bystanders.

Have a elderly lady owns and runs local business here that got scamed by telephone scammers saying they were from electic company and were going to have her power turned off in hour and half since in arears on bill. I come in to see her and tells me about this and that they sounded legit. Told her to get latest electric bill compare numbers-client number and amount owed-and compare. Scammers also told she had to go get travelers checks made out to fictitious collection agency at P O box number. Asked her if she doing this and she says yes that years ago she had service cut off at her home and didn't want that to happen at the business. Told her to call cops,FBI and electric company because she had phone number they called from which didn't match election company, also told her that for utility company to turn off service they had to notify in in writing with date of cut off. Would not believe me and was very arguementive until to late, after doing what scammers told her to do,then finally calling cops who did absolutely nothing but say sorry you listened to scam.
