One of President Donald Trump’s loudest critics from within his own party took to the Senate floor on Tuesday afternoon to denounce his calling Democrats “treasonous” at an event in Ohio the prior evening.

In a scathing address, Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona described Trump’s comments as “vile,” lamenting what he described as the “daily sundering of our country” at the hands of a bombastic and often incendiary commander-in-chief.

The night before, Trump harshly criticized Democrats during a speech on Cincinnati for not standing to applaud during his State of the Union address less than a week earlier.

“They were like death — and un-American,” Trump said. “Un-American. Somebody said treasonous. I mean, yeah, I guess, why not. Can we call that treason? Why not? I mean they certainly din’t seem to love our country very much.”

Trump-Putin press conference leaves members of both parties reeling

President Donald Trump's joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday left members of both U.S. political parties reeling.

Trump, who called the two-hour-long talks that preceded the joint appearance "direct, open, deeply productive," indicated that the U.S. was to blame for tensions between the two nations, avoided rebuking Putin for Russia's interference in the 2016 election, and even suggested the countries work together on cybersecurity.

His comments drew criticism from lawmakers of both parties and from former government officials, many of whom argued the president had been too lenient with the Russian leader.

Here are some key reactions to the press conference:

• "I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression," Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) tweeted. "This is shameful."

"This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russia as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves.

"It is imperative that Congress hold hearings on the extent and scope of any cooperation with Russia in Syria regarding Iran’s presence," he continued.

• "This is a sad, shameful moment for our great nation," Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) tweeted. "We will reclaim our values and reassert our global leadership. We'll turn the page on this dark chapter. But it won't happen on its own. We all must stand up—to side with U.S. law enforcement and to protect all Americans."

• "This is bizarre and flat-out wrong," Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) said in a statement. "The United States is not to blame. ... When the President plays these moral equivalence games, he gives Putin a propaganda win he desperately needs.

• "This entire trip has just been one giant middle finger from President Trump to his own country," Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) tweeted. "Just jaw dropping."

• "It’s embarrassing that American flags were present at #TrumpPutinSummit, because an American president was not," Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) tweeted. "Our president, above everything else, must defend US. @realDonaldTrump just showed he cannot and will always side with Russia. @HouseGOP, do you hear the fire alarm?"

• "A person can be in favor of improving relations with Russia, in favor of meeting with Putin, and still think something is not right here," Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) tweeted.

• "The president's refusal to acknowledge that Putin interfered in our elections should alarm us all," Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) tweeted. "Putin is a threat to our democracy and our upcoming election, that's a fact. The president's unwillingness to stand up to him and defend our nation is unacceptable and embarrassing."

• "In all fairness to @realDonaldTrump, performance reviews with your boss are often 1 on 1," Rep. Rita Lowey (D-N.Y.) tweeted.

• Trump "didn’t hold Putin responsible, & he didn’t say one negative word about Putin & his attack against our country," Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.), ranking member of the House Ethics Committee, tweeted. "Our President likes to talk tough, but when it came time to take a strong stand on behalf of the US, he completely and utterly failed."

• Trump "lets Putin lie to his face and doesn't even contradict him," Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, tweeted. "Cannot remember a more blatant display of weakness by a U.S. president."

Not every response was critical. "Glad to hear it," Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) tweeted in response to a video of Trump saying he would "put world peace ahead of politics."

It was nice to hear from a few Republican officials who still think America is worth defending. I can't wait to hear/smell what those who place Trump over Country will have to say about this.

I'm content to wait until they've downloaded their go-to talking points from FOXitty&Fiends. That's been the pattern all along. No reason to expect any different/better from them now.

Trump went there with an opportunity to really do some good and...

President Trump has a 2 hour private meeting with Putin then comes out to a Press Conference and speaks for 10 minutes to his enemies from Russia on one side and his enemies from the American Press on the other side.

Now the world knows everything that went on.

I am glad, after 8 years of Obama's weakness while Russia grew stronger, we are now beginning to talk again.

As far as Brennan's remarks, remember he admittedly supported the Communists, during the Cold War no less.

Trump is an embarrassment.

I do not understand why President Trump would not trust the Intelligence Community after having proved themselves with the false Dossier being used to get FISA warrants to wiretap Trumps campaign.

After the continuing fall of the FBI and Justice Department over their underhanded use of false intelligence by biased investigators, I don't know why Trump would take everything they say without a grain of salt.

Even as the head of the CIA under Obama admitted he voted for the Communists during the Cold War, you would think Trump would take everything they say as truth.

I don't even find it strange that the FBI, Mueller and the Intel agencies came out with that report on the 12 Russians putting out false info on the net just one day before Trump and Putin met.

American journalists showed more bravery and honesty today in questioning Putin about the Russian attack on American sovereignty than the President of the United States.

Meanwhile, from body language, to post-summit statements, to the optics, to the desperate handshakes, Putin was running the show. Trump looked desperate. It's unbelievable but all too believable.

He trusts the word of a former KGB agent over the consensus of the American intelligence community backed by a ton of facts. To write this is to be shocked anew. Everyone who excuses Trump’s behavior must answer that now, and when history inevitably judges.

American power has been weakened.

No, that should have happened inside the meeting... at the podium should have been more like,

Trump: We talked about election interference. We have assurances from Putin that the Russian government will never attempt to influence an American election and that they will work with the American government to stop any private Russian entities from doing it.

So I opened FB a few minutes ago and on cue about 3 of the top 5 things on my feed are from my conservative friends and they all have to do with stories about what Obama did or didn't do regarding Russia..

It's like they have no answer for what just happened other than the "What did you expect him to do?" or the "We don't know what they really talked about." or the "We'll just have to wait and see what happens next."

So in the absence of anything to defend.. attack Obama.
