jc I tried to post this, but it got posted in the wrong place, and now I feel uninspired to try to retype it, but whatever. I dont think this forum has gone downhill. The political threads have become more and more extremist, on both sides, for sure. And all the sensible posters have stopped posting in the political threads because why bother. But I feel the extremism is just a reflection of the internet as a whole. Lets keep it real, the last few Presidents have been very polarizing. It has sent the internet in general off the deep end. And so that gets reflected here. But the rest of this forum is fine. I dont see anything wrong with the community at all. Mostly...if the political threads are annoying....stop reading them. Nobody is forcing you to. Come visit us in the sports threads.

but I think the side discussion needed to happen. I work all across this country while doing my job. I spend long periods of time in the places I go, and in the last 10 years I have mostly worked out west. I have worked in either mixed groups, or at times, I have been the only non-Hispanic in the departments I direct. I realize there are, and am infuriated by instances of bigotry around this country, but I must tell you, in my experiences over the last decade, people I work with are respectful and actually loving to to each other when many different races and groups work together. I've made this argument a number of times Jules.. this disconnect between what I see in my life and what I'm told I'm supposed to see by the media and social media... I see a hundred interactions a day between folks of different races and ethnicities and they are almost always respectful and decent... then one horrible event happens in Idaho and it's all over the news and I'm told to believe that things are falling apart and we are on the verge of some kind of civil war with each other. I'm not denying they happen, I'm not denying they are horrible when they do happen, I'm not even denying they may be on the rise.. but the hysteria that ensues is completely disproportionate to what most people see in their lives... we don't celebrate the positives and they happen in every city and town and school and church and business every day, small victories of people coming together with a total disregard to why they are SUPPOSED to hate each other.. just to help each other out and to treat each other with respect and decency.. Things will have to get a whole lot worse before I succumb to this notion that we have regressed a couple hundred years in our level of civility and tolerance... I just don't see it. But I will continue to call it out when/if I do actually see it..

Trump is nothing compared to, for instance, Ronald Reagan in 1981. 2. But there was no internet back then. Now you got millions of kids who can post instantly. Just like an adult. Except they might be 14 years old and say screwball things. And of course you have adults saying screwball things. There is one more huge factor. We’re all fans of the worst team in the history of professional U.S. sports. That doesn’t help the mood. In fact it's immense. Sorry, but it’s true.

Isn't this the thread you and Clem were bemoaning 'teaching wisdom to rocks'? I meant to address this last night. You seem to have taken very personally my remarks about rocks and trumpanzees. Given the civility with which you and I have always conversed, what makes you think I was ever talking about you? Sorry I haven't gotten back to you on this, computer went on the fritz, new one came UPS today. I didn't take it personally against myself, I knew you weren't talking about me. It's just that you are the one that caused me to MATURE in my dialogue. (That and the fact that I learned that it really wasn't worth the energy to get upset over someone whose mind I'll never change.) Like you said some time ago, we could be neighbors, get along and have a beer on the porch even though we disagree on certain things.I understand that you voted for Donald Trump. Lots of people did (for a number of reasons) I understand that you did not live 'My American Experience.' True. But those facts do not automatically make you guilty of being either of those pejoratives. So... after all our conversations, what made you automatically assume that I lumped you into either of those categories? Wouldn't you have seen some indication before now that I held you at this level of low esteem? Nothing. The only conclusion I can reach (at this time) is that you read my words, assumed a tribal posture and cast me as an adversary. Even though you and I have never really crossed words. This is now the second time you have taken personally something I said about others. I hope I just caught you on a bad day. Otherwise, I'll be compelled to think this is part of a pattern. What was the first time? The thing about the renaming of the mountain? If that's it, you're right, I didn't get the joke. My apologies.Dude...??? No, I genuinely admire you for the influence you've had on me. What disappoints me is that these insults aren't going to bridge the divide. No one here would even think of being as cruel to someone they were looking at in person. Unless it was one of those tiki torch carrying goofballs.p.s. The rocks and trumpanzees know who they are. I've not been subtle about my regard for them. Because subtle doesn't work on them as well as a baseball bat does. Speaking as one of those that would've tried to find a way to spin anything he could find in order to make a 'point for our side', it worked on me...eventually.

I have respect for you Ted. I'm as guilty as any of slinging insults though and I do so without apology. The insults are intended for those who offend me, not for those who are rational yet think differently.
Some people are incapable of rational thought or reasonable debate, barely able to carry on a mere conversation. I don't care to know them in real life and would absolutely talk to them the same way. If you are offensive to me, I have no problem ripping you.
Clem may be more distinguished in the way he would handle things, but I'd bet if he had no use for you that you would already be well aware.

The craziest thing about ICE is that you really can't prove to them that you're a citizen or legal resident. There are stories of people held by ICE for 10 days, before a court could accept the evidence. This is exactly how secret police units begin. It's exactly why they shouldn't be run as a private force that only responds to the DoJ.

Yeah, the article mentions that the detaining center [prison] had their own courts in windowless rooms and the accused were not afforded legal representation. Hard to prove your innocence in such an environment.

I saw a court report the other day that kids are put in windowless rooms and the lights are left on 24/7. What the hell? That's an enhanced interrogation technique. The reported children were all under 10 and of mixed gender. The joke on the left is that, abolishing ice is the centrist position, while the real leftist position is to prosecute ICE. Well, sometimes that position doesn't seem so radical.

I sometimes think that we've gone too far on the "rights" issue. However, it's horrifying to see how just how cruel and inhumane certain agencies can be when the public doesn't question their ethics and practices.

Yea, for as much as people rail at Trump and those at the top of the administration for their humane violations at the border, what's even sadder is I'm not really reading about large groups of border patrol guards quitting over the terrible treatment. I wonder if this comes to light in the coming years how many times we will hear "I was just following orders" ?

Legalism is their entire moral crutch. They believe their responsibility in the matter is entirely erased by the law. "If you didn't like the law. Why didn't you change it earlier?" It's quite telling of who would cowtow to authoritarian leadership.

It's my canary for people who would follow authoritarians as well. If you can only justify a law's existence because it's a law, you've unfortunately exposed yourself as not having a valid position on why a law is just. Any law rooted in morality can be justified on the moral merits, not the legal ones.

crimes against hispanics is nothing new. i've stated before that they are the new ethnic group to hate. flavor of the month kinda thing.
why? they're the fastest growing ethnic group in this country. they're already the majority minority. you have so many who identify as a white-hispanic (rightfully), so of course white people are gonna fell threatened by them.
Vers, you do know why its called marijuana here in America, right?
the actual name for weed is cannabis. but back in the day, the US government started calling it marijuana because it was primarily used by mexicans, who called it marijuana, making it easier to create laws banning it, amongst other reasons.
it become even more easy to keep it illegal once AA's started using it.
but hate crimes against hispanics were always gonna go up because they are currently the biggest threat to the VERY SPECIFIC while male conservative demographic who still want to maintain their european heritage.
despite the fact that latinos/hispanics are descendants of not only natives, but the spanish....cause spain and Portgual in located in Europe, just in case trump supporters weren't aware.

crimes against hispanics is nothing new. i've stated before that they are the new ethnic group to hate. flavor of the month kinda thing. I'll add people of Middle Eastern descent. Easy identified and they don't have much of a political voice. Native Americans, while perhaps not hated as much as the other groups, are also treated unfairly because they have almost no voice. Swish, it's always boggled my mind when you have people saying politically correct things about blacks, women, and gays while oozing hate for other minorities. I can infer that they are not really open-minded,liberated folks. Instead, they conceal their hate for certain groups because they know that they will face dire consequences socially--and perhaps--professionally. I wonder what they say about blacks, gays, and women when they are in their comfort groups?

i agree with you on everything but the LBGT community.
they get hate nonstop. the only thing that saves them is the fact that they can keep their mouth shut, and for the most part, nobody will notice.
but thats the difference between ethnic groups and then marginalized groups like the LBGT. while the hostility is certainly there, as an individual, if one so chooses they can not say anything and just blend in.
they shouldn't have to, but at least they have that option.
minorities in this country can't do that. latino's have a shot, but by in large, you can tell if someone is hispanic or not.
black people have a very tense history with this country, so being politically correct is normal.
women are now the majority, so yea, guys are gonna have to walk a fine line.
i personally have this new era ranked by hate as:
1. latino's 2. LBGT 3. Muslims
but with regards to the thread, people always hate the groups closest to them, and thats why hispanics are in, and have been targeted for quite some time. and it goes back centuries from when this country was being "discovered".
for example. in Turkey, the biggest beef those people have with outside groups are the Kurds and the Greeks, which just so happen to be the closets non-turks to them.
as far as your last question, unfortunately that happens in every ethnic group. you get around people who look like you, and the racist jokes start freely coming out. its disgusting, but human nature nonetheless.
the reason people say PC things about blacks and women is because the last thing most people want (which unfortunately, tends to be on the right) is those two groups mobilizing.
black people not only have influence in entertainment industries, but have something like a 1.5 trill purchasing power.
women are now the majority, which means they're also the majority in voting blocks.
latino's tend to be the easiest to just straight up trash, because there's so many white-hispanics who actually identify more white than latino, and tend to be more conservative voting people amongst them than other non white ethnic groups. so you can trash a latino, and still have a good number of latino's willing to vote for you.
i mean look at the hate asian americans are starting to get.
i actually understand why Asians have a beef with affirmative action, because its actually preventing them from getting into schools. but contrary to popular belief, it isn't blacks that are taking their spots; its other white students.
did you hear about the crap harvard was pulling when it came to asian student applicants?
appalling.

I wonder what they say about blacks, gays, and women when they are in their comfort groups? I don't. My Pops was textbook 'Longtown Clemens': square face, strong jawline, light complexion, straight, jet-black hair. Stupid white people used to say the most vile, hateful things around him, thinking they were in a 'safe space'. He took great delight in shattering their illusions and exposing their bigotry. I can't count the number of times he'd come home with another story about some fool with egg on his face. Mom looked like a blend of euro, Latina, and First Nation... and would share similar stories with us. They never sheltered us, because they knew we needed a clear understanding of the world around us. I'm pretty sure it was one of the hardest things they had to do as parents, but I'm glad they did it. Life/survival skills on display

I saw you brought the word ethics into the conversation. I thought it was on display for all to see that a large number in our society today no longer display or understand the meaning of that word. We see that here on this very board on a daily basis.
