DETROIT (AP) -- Cincinnati Bengals rookie running back Kenny Irons injured his left knee and ankle Thursday night against the Detroit Lions and was taken to the locker room on a cart after hobbling off the field.

Irons had four carries for 17 yards, including an 11-yard gain, after replacing starter Rudi Johnson in the exhibition opener for both teams.

The second-round pick from Auburn was hurt when his foot appeared to get caught up in the artificial turf while making a stutter-step move. Injuries limited Irons to 893 yards last season after he ran for a Southeastern Conference-high average of 108 yards per game in 2005.

Cincinnati is already without one of its reserve running backs, Chris Perry, who is still trying to come back after breaking his leg last season. Kenny Watson and Quincy Wilson shared the carries after Irons left the game.

I was watching that game when the injury occured. It sure didn't look good. Of course that doesn't mean a lot. But if looks DO mean anything,it was pretty ugly.

Yes,I was talking about the way he fell. And how he was afraid to put any weight on it after the play. But as you implied (or I think you were) we really won't know much untill tomorrow. An MRI may be needed. That was kind of my point as well. You can't really tell by "looking" right away about an injury.

I hate to hear this about any player on any team.

I really hope we can make it through the rest of camp with just some minor bumps and bruises.

So far, I think we've been relatively lucky minus Steinbach's knee. Ain't that a bitch too? Misses one game his entire Bengal career but gets hurt in training camp with us. Fortunately, it doesn't seem too serious. I'm holding out hope that's the case.

I would've really liked to see him get reps with the OL throughout the rest of TC and the preseason, though.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

On the injury note, NFL Network was reporting that Roethlisberger hurt his foot and left practice today. Who knows what it really means, could be nothing. Someone stepped on it I guess.

Looked hurtful when I saw it; hope it only keeps him out for awhile (season-ending, not career). Will leave a hole

Meanwhile, go Browns! And may the Elf be with you!

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bengals brought in Dominick Williams or Lee Suggs for a look. Quincy Wilson is too much a Rudi -clone and Kenny Watson isn't a threat to break a long one......
He's a good kid....that Irons......ironic Ki-Jana Carter blew his knee out vs the Lions too in a preseason game.

IMO Irons is a real talent. He is a threat any time he touches the ball. And I do hope it's nothing too serious.

Irons injures knee, on crutches

DETROIT -- Bengals second-round pick Kenny Irons, counted on to provide a change-of-pace spark for the offense, injured his left knee during the second quarter of the preseason opener Thursday night and was on crutches after the game.

He was examined by doctors in the training room at Ford Field. Coach Marvin Lewis confirmed the knee injury but did not have additional information.

Irons will have an MRI.

Exactly, division rival or not, this is a terrible thing to see for a young kid trying to realize his dream. lets hope it's something he can come back from and have his chance at a professional career.

Good luck Kenny

Man we sure have tried a lot of guys at RB haven't we.,.. with vitrually no success either... Droughns for one year looked real,, then nothing he gets his fat contract, can't stay out of off field problems and he's gone..

William Green looked good for about 7 games or so,, then off field issues and boom,, Gone.

Bengals' Irons Out For Season

Cincinnati, OH -- (Sports Network) - Cincinnati Bengals rookie running back Kenny Irons will miss the rest of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the team announced on Friday.

Irons, the Bengals second round pick out of Auburn, suffered the season-ending injury during Thursday night's 27-26 loss to Detroit.

Tests were conducted on Friday and confirmed the extent of the injury.

The news comes as another blow to the depleted Cincinnati backfield.

Running back Chris Perry, a former first-round pick, is expected to begin the season on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list and miss at least six games.

Bengals place Irons on injured reserve with ACL tear

Rookie tailback Kenny Irons, a second-round draft choice who was vying for the No. 2 job behind Cincinnati Bengals starter Rudi Johnson, was placed on injured reserve Friday, ending his debut season.

The former Auburn star tore the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee in Thursday's preseason opener and will require surgery. The Bengals said they expect Irons to recover fully and rejoin the team for next spring's offseason program.

Irons, 23, limped off the field following a 7-yard gain against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. It was his fourth rushing attempt of the contest and, in all, he gained 16 yards on the ground. The 49th player chosen overall in this year's draft, Irons had been one of the Bengals' standouts in training camp.

In last week's intrasquad scrimmage, Irons carried 10 times for 64 yards.

The loss of Irons means that the Bengals, who were attempting to upgrade at the No. 2 tailback spot, will again use versatile sixth-year veteran Kenny Watson in that role. Chris Perry, the club's first-round choice in 2004, has not been in camp as he recovers from offseason ankle surgery.

The multi-talented Perry, whose career has been marked by a series of injuries, will likely start the season on the NFL physically unable to perform list for a second straight year. By definition, that means Perry will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Irons was expected to add speed and big-play potential to the backfield. He was timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine workouts in February and was one of the fastest backs in the 2007 draft class.

After starting his college career at South Carolina, he transferred to Auburn in 2004. Irons finished with 496 carries for 2,366 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Irons is not the kind of back that normally comes back from the ACL tear either. Yeah he'll physically be able to play, but his cut back ability won't be what it used to.

First off.. ACL tears are not what they used to be.. medicine has advanced a lot in that area.. plenty of people recover from ACL's just fine now. Now please explain the following:

I gotta throw the BS flag on this one.. You know this about Kenny Irons how? A quick look at his bio at NFL.com shows that he's played with multiple injuries and still grabbed top honors and gained quite a few yards.. Just for example.. lets look at 2006.. here tis:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/irons_kenny

In 2006, Irons appeared in 10 games, missing two contests and playing most of the year at less than 100 percent due to turf toe, a groin pull, a high ankle sprain and a bruised fibula. He still managed to pick up All-SEC first-team honors from the league's coaches, as he ranked third in the conference in rushing, averaging 82.1 yards per game. He led the team with 821 yards and four touchdowns on 174 attempts (4.7 avg.). He snared nine passes for 76 yards (8.4 avg.) and amassed 897 all-purpose yards.

Looks like he recovered pretty well don't it? Can you maybe fill me in on something that you know?

I don't know about how an ACL tear would affect his cutback ability (probably not much if at all since they can repair ACL's to be stronger than before), but what it tells me is that he's brittle.

I said Irons is the "kind of back" referencing his running style. He's a slashing runner, and your ACL is key in your lateral movement.

Yes ACL surgery has improved, I will give you that. I just find that guys that are primarily slash or one cut runners don't have that same cutback ability after an ACL tear. Edgerrin James was probably the best slashing runner in the NFL when he tore his ACL, but now he has to rely more on his power. He has recovered some of that slashing ability, but not all of it.

Do I know Irons? No. Did I say I did? No. Has the guy played hurt before? Yeah him and thousands of other running backs. I'm not sure why you called me on that, or why you took offense to what I said, but that's your choice.

LOL I took no offense. I read your comments and my first reaction is "Just how does he know that Irons won't be what he used to be? Is he a Orthopedic surgeon / doctor?, Does he know Irons?. You made the statement, this statement:

Quote:

Irons is not the kind of back that normally comes back from the ACL tear either

If you post something like that on a public forum.. then you might get challenged to explain your remarks. Thats fair dontcha think? I simply pointed out that his past history shows that he has in fact recovered nicely from injuries.

If you're sensitive about it and you don't care to explain.. then you don't have to.. simple stuff.

Is it common football knowledge?

Let's take your example of Edgerrin James.. He blows the ACL in 01, has crap seasons in 02 when everyone wrote him off.. then has a decent 03, then gains 1500 plus yards in 04 and 05,.

Then he sucks ass in 06.. where many might say that was attributable to AZ's OLine.. (and Edge simply being older.. something that happens to us all) (hopefully anyways..)

But no matter.. it's academic.. I wish him well on a personal level and and I wish him losses everytime he plays the Browns
