Great movie. When I was making my first list, it was pretty much all French directors.

"MST3K" was one of my all time favorite TV shows as well.
"Horror of Spider Island" is their best from that series, imho.
I know you can see them on YouTube, but a few years back I was trying to add to my DVD collection , and they only come in "volume" packages (3 episodes per).
Volumes 1&2 cost me $40 each. Some are priced close to $100. No extras either.
No thanks.

I loved "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", and you're right , it's probably technically Sci-Fi .
I just always considered it a straight up love story.
The difference with something like "Solaris" is that their in space.
Incidentally,
I've always appreciated Jim Carey's dramatic stuff ( like Eternal) much more than the goofball stuff . Same applies for Robin Williams.

I liked "Fifth Element" for the reason you mentioned and more.
But,
the Chris Tucker character made me want to turn off the film.

Loved the snarky original. But not paying that for them. Just ridiculous. Joel rocked it!

Sorry, didn't see that Solaris was already mentioned. Good movie though.
Someone mentioned The Expanse. I have been trying to get into it, and it has some interesting moments, but it's not as good as any of the Star Trek series, Battlestar Galactica, Dr Who, Firefly, Quantum leap, or Babylon 5. Expanse is IMHO the best sci-fi series from the last years. It's very well written, the Miller character is one of the best in some time, and it tries to respect the original where it can. The Expanse universe is much better thought than of the others you mentioned. Belters are probably the best imaginary race in sci-fy universe. American Gods Dirk Gently Altered Carbon Black Mirror Taboo Are my top latest ones, Taboo is not sci-fy,but its a great one.

Alien The Thing (John Carpenter's 1981 re-make) District 9 2001 Altered States (does that qualify?)...if not, then...'Her'. is district 9 the one that kinda parallels the Israeli/Palestinian thing?

A bit, but the director was born and raised in South Africa, another apartheid state. He also directed Elysium and Chappie, which both share that same apartheid theme.

I don't think anything tops Blade Runner (2049 was fantastic as well). The Star Wars are all pretty solid to great as well. The Alien movies (including Prometheus) are top of the charts... A few flying under the radar, or that I didn't notice anyone mentioning: The Thing (1982) Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Inception Mad Max Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Sci-fi Albums? "The Abyss " was great - especially in that claustrophobic scene where the diver's lights go out and oxygen goes down while searching the derelict ship.
That movie was definitely the best of the trio of underwater films of the time, including "Deep-water Six" and "Leviathan ".

Soylent green is people!!! Glad Portland brought up The Last Starfighter, but how has nobody mentioned the greatest, the ultimate, the most fantastical... ICE PIRATES! I loved everything about this movie when I was little except for the Robert Urich love scene in the rain. What aboot Flash Gordon? "Everyone everywhere every woman every man it's Flash, aahaa savior of the universe." Spaceballs also a good call. Love the dude combing the desert with the afropick. So many good one liners in this movie, I still quote it today.

We didn't mention it much, but the serials with Flash Gordon and such also included Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen (band!) and a bunch of others. I loved those B&W shorts!
